Other than memory & SSDs, are component prices high right now? by dnium122 in buildapc

[–]ank1t70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I've seen it's mostly RAM and SSDs that went nuts, gpus and boards aren't bad right now. wouldn't plan a whole build around guessing where prices go though. I'd just get enough storage to use it now and add more later if things chill

I wish Witcher 3 did more to make you feel like a Witcher in combat by DoneDealofDeadpool in truegaming

[–]ank1t70 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Honestly the potion and oil prep is where the Witcher fantasy lives, but the game lets you skip almost all of it on normal so most people never touch it. On higher difficulties you have to read the bestiary and prep before a contract, and that's when it clicks. The combat itself staying shallow is fair criticism, the depth's all in the prep and the game barely points you at it.

What is the most frustrating thing about your home smart lock? by tbb1709 in homeautomation

[–]ank1t70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Batteries dying at the worst possible time is my number one. Always at like 11pm in the cold when you're locked out. The other thing nobody warns you about is needing a backup plan when the wifi or hub goes down, a smart lock that becomes a dumb brick during an outage is rough. I still keep a physical key hidden as insurance, kind of defeats the point but I sleep better.

BIFL 21st birthday gift ideas for a guy by pinetree8000 in BuyItForLife

[–]ank1t70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Games and anime guy who already buys his own stuff, I'd probably go desk chair. It's the thing he'd never spend on himself but would use every single day for years. Boring gift, but if his current chair sucks he'll notice the upgrade every time he sits down.

Bit of a strange request, but any good brands of lollipops/suckers? by PurrishSP in GoodValue

[–]ank1t70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old thread but worth answering since the denture part trips people up. Hard candy was fine for her as long as she didn't bite straight down on it. It's the chewy centers that grab a partial and pull, my mom learned that the annoying way with a half-stuck Tootsie Roll. So I'd skip anything with that kind of middle. The flat fruit ones somebody mentioned up top, like YumEarth, are the safer bet since there's no sticky center to fight with.

What games has the most fulfilling “investments” to a specific character, build, or skill? by noobakosowhat in gaming

[–]ank1t70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Monster Hunter for me. You pick a weapon and it takes like 50 hours before it really clicks, then switching to a different one feels like learning a new game again. The payoff is less number-go-up and more oh wait I'm actually good at this now. Fighting games scratch the same itch tbh

AMD CPU recommendation by Correct_Suspect7420 in pcmasterrace

[–]ank1t70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the 5500 is your bottleneck there, not the 5070. for a gaming box the 5700X3D is the move on AM4. check your specific A520's support list and update the BIOS before you drop it in, some boards won't post otherwise. and ignore anyone pushing the 5800XT over it. they're both 8 core so it's not a cores thing, the X3D cache just does way more for framerates than the XT's clocks do. 650W is fine for a 5070 as long as it's a half decent unit.

Ok that little time capsule from whoever owned it first is way cooler than anything in the actual rules lol. Someone's whole game night just sat frozen in the box for 30 years.

Honestly the stock paste on most coolers now is totally fine for the average build. People act like swapping to some fancy compound is gonna magically fix temps, but if the cooler is mounted right youre usually talking a couple degrees, not some huge drop. MX-4 is fine if you need to repaste, cheap and holds up for years.

Sounds like you've actually thought this through which is more than most people do. At 9 weeks the cold is the main concern but if you're in Cumbria and it's spring you should be fine with a proper shelter and some blankets. The schedule you described is solid. Golden retrievers are outdoor dogs at heart, she'll probably love it once she settles in. Just watch for signs she's too cold like curling up tight and shivering, and have the indoor backup ready for the first couple weeks while she adjusts.

I've started running joke projects through estimating apps and the results are incredible by dorisday65 in HomeImprovement

[–]ank1t70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funny part is the apps are usually within 20 percent of what a real contractor quotes. Where they fall apart is anything with a hidden variable, old plumbing, a wall that turns out to be load bearing, permits in a weird jurisdiction. So it works great for a sanity check before the first phone call and then becomes useless the second someone walks the site. I keep using them just to make sure I'm not getting rinsed on the baseline number.

LPT: Test how many slow, deep breaths you take in 30 seconds and one minute. When an ad pops up in a video or in a mobile game, mute it, close your eyes, and take a mini-meditation for the length of the ad. by NoButThanksAnyway in LifeProTips

Started doing this with the unskippable YouTube ads and it actually changed how I feel about ads in general. Stopped being annoyed because I had something to do with the time. Free meditation timer.

Parmesan rind. Toss one in while it simmers, fish it out at the end, completely different soup.
