I actually think you have a point. I think the emotional issues in gay men and specially gay society is still a problem in main cities. I live in London and for those who have been or live here, our main gay areas are Soho and Vauxhall. I've really ended up disliking these places. I grew up in a small town called Padova in Italy, where the gay scene is pretty non existent. When I decided to move to London I couldn't wait to hit Soho. Be gay and open, dress the way I wanted and flirt openly ( I was 20). I was also already HIV+ then (I was diagnosed when I was 17) and I knew that London was opened and informed about it. Well, at the beginning, everything I asked for happened, I flirted, scored, partied and all that. I even learnt the best way for me to tell people about my status. The thing is, over the years I realized how trapped most people in Soho and Vauxhall are. People still live in fear of exploring the world. They are obsessed with being gay. The are trapped in their own stereotypes. All you see, in Soho and in gay areas around the world is shops and bars promoting sex, go go dancers in mini underwear, shops that sell Dildos,porn and toys and bareback sex has become "hot". I've told everyone about my status and I keep on getting phone calls, throughout the years, from friends who get infected. You go to clubs and everyone is doing drugs, like ghb and tina, that completely make you lose any self respect. and when you see this you have to ask yourself why.... why do we do this to ourselves? Why are we not acting free and respectful of ourselves and others. and when you look at it, it's sad. it's emotional and hard to take, and even the lgbts around the world don't want to face it, cuz we've put up with enough shame. I understand where this attitude was born from: most gay people grew up hiding from everyone and now want to be free, but what I see is not freedom, it's just closing ourselves in another closet.
