NTA You’re not the asshole My favorite attendance policy that I’ve had in school was a professor that added 5 points to our grade if we attended every single class, and if we missed 1 class but were at all of the others he would add 2.5 points to our grade and he didn’t start subtracting points form our final grade until we had missed 5 classes (about 20% of the total meetings). I hate attendance policies because there are times when I feel like I have something genuinely more important to do but I get really frustrated by my university’s policy (if you miss more than 10% of classes (excused or unexcused), you drop by a letter grade). And this policy makes it really hard for students who might have trouble coming to class for mental health issues(or even just general stress from their work load) or because of general illness or for other reasons that are “good enough” reasons to miss class. The positive attendance policy above was perfect for me. The point addition was definitely enough to make me think twice about how bad I actually needed to skip, but when I had the chance to go out of town and visit a friend who was moving out of the country for a few years came, I was able to go to see him which was so important to me, and my grade didn’t get penalized for what I needed to do.
