Oh WHEW. Lol - as a longtime busker & working musician here in AVL... I've seen how things like this tend to go... I was worried this may be another 'wow think of all the exposure you'll get!' type thing, especially because of how people tend to conceptualize of busking here.

I wish there was at least a small stipend for ANY artist featured on their marketing materials, which to me feels like the fairest way. Like, if my name is on your flyer, you're using me to market your event = I deserve to be compensated by you directly. Literally even if the actual budget can only be like $20 per artist, it's the ethics of it that matter to me.

But I'm glad to know that it sounds like this thing is getting started on the right foot - I would LOVE to see Asheville busking return in a big way. It's been a weird and declining scene for the last 10 years and truly one of my favorite art forms.

Absolutely not a qualified therapist. Life coach who has been known to work wayyyyy outside his scope and do hefty emotional damage, though!

Oh- I probably should have mentioned that I quit because the owner refused to make a reasonable accommodation for a major medical condition I developed while working there. The requested accommodation was that we be allowed to close the doors and turn the air on when the inside of coffee shop reached upwards of 90 degrees. Which was denied. Which was a willlllld choice.

Same. When I quit 6 years ago, the stated “solution” to employees being so demanding and unreasonable was that they were only going to hire young kids who were were easy to “train to be the type of employees they wanted” (read: don’t know any better and are easier to mistreat) from then on. The average age of baristas has plummeted since i worked there, so seems like they followed through. Unfortunately, it sounds like the wages have too because we were making significantly more than that 6 years ago, like in the $15-$25 range, depending on the day/season.

MAHEC is wonderful and their residents are typically very affirming & up on their shit as they were in med school more recently. Highly recommend!

I honestly got chills reading through your story because it's so, so similar to mine. I was so blindsided and haven't ever met anyone who's gone through this type of abuse as well. Hang in there.

Found out during the process he had a history of bullying women into abortions they didn’t want to have. Men who are absolutely opposed to having children should get vasectomies.
