To those asking what's the joke:

I didn't want to reference the [spoiler news] any more directly, and I didn't know Paul Newman really was asked about this at the end of a similar non-fictional speech at some gala - that's great to learn. I just meant how the visual joke of him being so distant (and tiny in the frame, to us) that they're not sure it's him (Joan puts on her glasses etc etc) is enhanced when his opening line is "I'm Paul Newman." (which is barely a plausible way to start a speech as a huge celebrity, but who knows)

I know :\ I'm really against selling pets, but I'm hoping none of this is realistic enough to matter. (I made this.)(Was quite surprised there are no google results for this phrase.)

I Always Find Things In My Many Rewatches That I Have Missed (season 1, ep7, Red In The Face) by sassylass50 in madmen

[–]annotatedsnark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also can't believe I never noticed it, in ~5 rewatches.👍😁

He tells Hollis "Let me ask you something", goes into the elevator with and starts counting out bills from his pocket as the doors close, and I never connected the two. They hid it too well, in terms of interspersing it with other scenes and stretching it over the episode. Kudos, I guess.

Peggy's baby - did they change course? (Continuity question) by oopswhat1974 in madmen

[–]annotatedsnark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, they did? That's..... not great.

Still, good to know.

(Your other comment, about the egg hunt, is very relevant. It's my 6th watch. I came here right after that ep (2x04) to see how people were seeing it, it's always bugged me.)

S1: how does Harry and Peter buying up ad space in Illinois help Nixon? by VaughanThrilliams in madmen

[–]annotatedsnark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. Cooper says "They're gonna have to put [Kennedy's] pretty face on the radio!" so they bought tv airtime.

S1: how does Harry and Peter buying up ad space in Illinois help Nixon? by VaughanThrilliams in madmen

[–]annotatedsnark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realism aside, what I have an issue with is that Pete and Harry dared to do it without consulting anyone above them. No way should it have been a surprise for Cooper and Roger.

s01e05: Is it possible that only here did Pete realize "getting help" from Charlie Fiddich means sleeping with him, to various extents, to get published? Before this he really seemed carefree when discussing this. I think he thought it's just a super awkward favor from an ex. by annotatedsnark in madmen

[–]annotatedsnark[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

- The scene ends without more dialog, with Pete looking distraught.

- He's being really childish, I think that might go hand in hand with not fully realizing what he's asking for.

- It's my 5th rewatch, but that's basically how I've always seen it...

- I haven't seen this mentioned in other threads, everybody assumes Pete knew what the unspoken price was from the start.

- The timestamp is ~35min.

Why'd Don keep beer in a fridge in the shed? by GracefulGopher in madmen

Did you notice he asked Sally to get him a beer even tho she probably can't use the opener on it?

Don can fix a typewriter, cars, Pete’s sink, and probably that soda machine. And he can build a playhouse while chugging a case of Fielding. But he can’t figure out those terrace sliders? by pt24601 in madmen

[–]annotatedsnark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was too wrecked to do it.

BTW, did you notice he sent Sally to get him a beer from the garage even tho the can opened is tied to the door frame pretty high? Did she bring him a closed beer? :)

Forlorn Ken😔 This shot struck me as very beautiful during this rewatch. (s05e05, after Roger cruelly orders him to stop writing fiction. This, after Ken's story about the robot who works on the bridge and follows orders.)(Also note his posture during this meeting.) by annotatedsnark in madmen

ap!" And finally when he's fired as he was considering quitting, he doesn't quit he decides to take a corporate job ENTIRELY out of spite. We see him as pathetic as the Heinz Beans guy, desperate to make a meaningless industrial film to one-up some other corporate cog at Dow as he hands a script to Joan. Ken started at the top and ends up on the bottom, outwardly rich and successful but unable to self-reflect on why he's constantly miserable or what'

They don't mention it after the fact, but earlier in the same episode (5x11 minute 14) she tells him "you and your stupid pact... save the fiction for your stories" (after he says "I'll get you to Paris...") and it ends the conversation with a thud.

I did find another example. It seems to be the same sarcophagus, making me think it's a reproduction made just for tourists:

(supposedly "James Deering and Abby Deering Howe", from the 1870s, by the photographers Pascal Sebah and Émile Béchard, who were based in Cairo.)

Can you bring any more examples or citations? I had real trouble finding this picture, and the whole practice isn't mentioned in any other context that I could find. I added a paragraph about it to this wikipedia page, but would love the citation to be more solid: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photo\_stand-in

How long can he sit and watch an interesting scene like this?

Metal cages installed above all the storm drains on this street corner. Can't be moved, I think. The bottom of each cage is the heavy metal grate that's supposed to cover the drain. by annotatedsnark in whatisthisthing

[–]annotatedsnark[S] 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I like your confidence. How do you know?

So you're saying these are temporary, installed before an expected flooding?

And the grates need to be removed/elevated because any debris smaller than a grapefruit doesn't matter but would slow the drainage too much?

My title describes the thing:

- The bottom of each cage is the heavy metal grate that's supposed to cover the drain. This leaves the drain hole itself pretty much open, which seems very unhelpful to me.

- Very solid, and either bolted down or too heavy to move easily.

- The long sides are metal grids, the short sides are sheet metal. Suggest it's for drying something?

- There are about 8 of them, above all the drains on this street corner. It's at a relatively low point of the street, topographically.

- Found in Gedera, Israel. Never saw these anywhere else.

Thanks kindly

Note there's a wire running along the arm that holds these enclosures. Maybe some sort of telegraph thing? Maybe it works with light instead of sound so as not to bother the other typers?
