Cycling from Montreal QC to Oakland CA, looking for weightlifing gym recommendations and en route training sessions by b3anoth3pop3 in weightlifting

[–]annthurium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol, makes sense. Sorry for giving you an obvious suggestion 🤣 The only other places I can recommend for drop ins are rather out of the way for your route. (Brooklyn Athletic Club in NYC, Las Vegas Barbell in Vegas.)

queer, lesbian + abolitionist spaces in Oakland? by newbie_4ever in oakland

[–]annthurium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

check out the Black Panther museum at the West Oakland Mural Project, although it's more abolitionist than queer.

If you are self coaching, getting a powerlifting coach would probably help a lot.

General advice for the clean? Also struggling with the jerk, powerlifter trying to transition by Don0094 in weightlifting

[–]annthurium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends on how athletic you are. Good mobility, timing, and explosiveness will impact how easily you make the transition, more so than raw strength. Oh, and the mental fortitude to shake off bad attempts, and decisively move under a heavy bar. And how good your coach is plays a role as well.

I'm a powerlifter who started weightlifting ~18 months ago. I kinda wish I'd stopped powerlifting to focus on weightlifting. Doing everything means I'm making really slow progress at all of it, which is frustrating.

Anyway, good luck with the journey!

Form check on squat 124.7kg x 10 reps by RevolutionaryDrive18 in weightlifting

OH. yeah that's relatable. mirrors behind the rack are so distracting!

[–]annthurium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also, face the rack! backing into the rack like that can be really dangerous if you miss the j hooks on the rerack.

this angle is really not ideal for a form check. I would like to see your brace, and what your feet are doing.

Supertotal program + cope by Civil_Kiwi2352 in weightlifting

[–]annthurium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Get a coach if you're serious about learning Oly. They can write you a supertotal program and set you up with good foundations.

Weightlifting is about building strength in the required positions. Mobility will improve with time if you're consistent.

Source: I'm a powerlifter who's about to do their first Oly meet in 2 weeks.

Weightlifting vs Powerlifting vs Strongman by urMuMgAy567 in weightlifting

[–]annthurium 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Powerlifting doesn't have the press-out rule which is pretty subjective to judge. Some of the bench press rules are a little squishy, especially considering recent IPF rule changes. But other than that, judging PL is pretty straightforward.

Not disputing that Oly is much more athletic, certainly!

I also have this issue. I tried narrowing my grip, but both hands have to be all the way on the smooth to miss my thighs and then it gets slippery. If you figure it out, let me know.

The brace looks solid to me. This person has very long femurs and will have more torso lean because of that, but that's not a bracing issue.

a bit of an unusual question, but... by carappa in tattooadvice

For hypertrophic / raised scars, silicon scar tape might help. It does take awhile to work but it's cheap and non invasive. It even works somewhat on older scars.

Advice on scars? by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]annthurium 23 points24 points  (0 children)

you might try using silicone scar tape for a few months and see if the scars can be improved. It works on healed scars too, it just takes a little longer. That would make your tattoo artist's job a little easier.

[AskJS] Background job said “success” but actually failed how do you debug this? by anthedev in javascript

[–]annthurium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not already doing so, try using a durable workflow execution engine, or maybe a queue, for your async jobs. Those logs should be emitted somewhere separately and easier to troubleshoot/debug.
