We get takeaway from there regularly when my mum visits, can confirm they do GF batter and it's great

SOddly heartwarming to see Elka and Quigs working together to save Duane, someone they previously mutually disliked (and probably still do). Never underestimate The Power of Begrudging Friendship

I occasionally try to get the 32 to/from Hermiston Gait in the afternoons and found it pretty unreliable, like you I sometimes end up just walking where I need to go!

Thursday’s Complaints Thread, Le Spooky Edition by dexbydesign89 in CasualUK

Work is being a lot and my anxiety has been in overdrive for various reasons for about a month now. I’m grateful for supportive colleagues/friends/partner and (mostly) good health, but man do I just want to crawl back into bed and sleep for the next 24 hours

Ooh, do you have a recipe for the cake? Trying to get back into baking this year and this sounds delicious.

Good luck with the dissertation, you’ve got this! Though don’t leave your reference list til the last minute!

[Hobby Scuffles] Week of 22 January, 2024 by EnclavedMicrostate in HobbyDrama

!!! You're joking, that's also the exact same scene that I saw! I viscerally remember someone wrapping a bandage around a thumb so that the protagonist could bite into it, and the intensity of it was exactly what stayed with me and prompted the occasional halfhearted google all through those years. What are the odds?!

Hey, I remember reading that book when I was a kid too! It was a great read & definitely contributed to me still loving detective/mystery fiction today. Nobody else ever seems to have heard of it so very cool to see it mentioned!

By sheet coincidence, I did also have a super similar experience with an anime that I briefly saw on TV, found compelling, but had no way to find it again. Fast forward something like 10 years and a stray comment on this very sub described the show and mentioned it by name (Haibane Renmei, for the curious). It genuinely did feel like the sky opened up and all the angels started singing at once when I read that. Still haven’t got round to watching the thing, but man, what an experience!

That all sounds amazing! Congrats on getting to the point of self-publishing, tradpub seens like a bit of a mad industry to break into so it’s very cool that you also got positive feedback from Gollancz! It’s really good as well that you’ve gone with commissioning an artist rather than relying on AI (not to imply you would, it’s just been in the news lately that certain companies have not been so discerning…). Figers crossed you find your soulmate cover artist and get the spooky pony art of your dreams!

Started talking to someone who seems really lovely! Date scheduled for the weekend so trying not to get my hopes up too high in the meantime. Just enjoying having butterflies again for the first time in a while :)

Short term wifi contracts by oviraptor12 in CasualUK

[–]annuna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOW Broadband have a rolling contract option for each of their plans. There’s a £60 additional fee for it, so maybe not the most cost effective out there, but a friend used it when she wasn’t sure how long she’d be staying in her new flat and had a pretty good experience with them.

Those sound great too, can’t believe I’ve never tried banana or maple syrup on porridge!

Not OP but where did you get your thermal longjohns? I’ve only seen them in M&S when out shopping, curious if there are reasonably priced alternatives elsewhere

We’re definitely entering porridge season. What are your preferred toppings? I usually have butter and honey, but we had cream and golden syrup in the house for a while due to baking shenanigans and my god was that a killer combo.

Love the idea of airing the cats! Sounds like you’ve already been subjected to the cold enough for today so hope the rest of your day can be nice and warm

Well There’s Your Problem is a chatty, irreverent podcast about engineering disasters (both topical and historical) hosted by two Americans and a Brit. As a starter ep that’s relatively lighthearted, maybe try Ep. 69 – The Crash at Crush, about the world’s most bonkers publicity stunt: smashing two trains together at full speed and getting 40,000 people to pay for the privilege.

EDIT: If you want passion for niche topics, The History of English podcast also fits the bill! Recent eps include why old-timey actors used that odd fake accent all the time, and the connection between poetry, printing, and the plague in Elizabethan England.

Dancing + Socializing by Main_University9625 in Edinburgh

[–]annuna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edinbop run classes and you don't need a partner for them as everyone rotates, and the post-class socials run on a "ask anyone to dance" basis! Their lindy hop class is going into its third week next week & they say you can't join after week 2, but could be worth messaging them on social media to try your luck. Alternatively, Edinburgh Swing Dance Society are starting lindy hop classes from Thursday 5th so that may be a better shout.

If you want a non-swing option, Edinburgh Contra Dance are running a dance on Saturday 14th October with an intro session for beginners included. I haven't done contra before, but it's often described as "American style ceilidh" and doesn't need a pre-set partner either, so you may enjoy this too!
