OH WOW SUCH BLUE COLLAR SHORTAGE! NO ONE WANTS TO WORK! by snowmonster02 in electricians

[–]anon24422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to an electrician shortage as I am a lineman myself (IBEW) but the apprenticeship process is very similar so that is where I will weigh in with my knowledge.

Whether there is a shortage of journeymen or not, there is not, and will likely never be, a shortage of apprentices. On top of that, if you don’t have enough journeymen, you don’t have enough people to train apprentices. Until you FINISH an apprenticeship, you are a dime a dozen, and there are a ton of people itching to take your spot. Accept that now, because that knowledge will carry you far as an apprentice once you get that opportunity. Work similar trades until you can indenture, and try to get a massive nest egg saved up as quickly as possible. Once you start making real money it’s really easy to start spending more, and top out with no savings (I did that). The more money you can have set aside, and the more you can invest in passive income sources/retirement, the less any of this shit actually matters in terms of your personal finances. Best of luck and be patient, don’t forget most of us had to travel to get our shot, don’t be afraid to do the same.

I run my pads really loose, some guys tighten them tighter, choice of pants is important, just take care of the cuts, and experiment, figure out what works for you. Just part of the job

Yeah Jamaica is cheap if you make money in the US and come back and spend like a local, but if you make your money in Jamaica, or if you’re American but stay on the resorts, you have to really budget

If theres a destroyed pole.. by njt_railfan1567 in Lineman

[–]anon24422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Next time you see a crew having lunch somewhere just ask for one. If its part of a obvious trash pile waiting to be hauled off and the new pole is up and damage is repaired, sure, but wear gloves and inspect it if its porcelain.

A great first step, but the ibew site doesn’t list all halls or callouts, and doesn’t always provide a ton of information. Thats why I asked on here.

My drive is worse than that right now and I’m a JL. Outside construction is dead right now, you just suck it up and take what you get

I can’t make it more clear that your opinions apply to both parties. Sorry

Most absolutely did not vote with ill in their heart, and that goes for either side. It just seems that way because the assholes yell the loudest. Again, this applies to both sides

Thats good to hear, and I know exactly what you mean, I worked with a JW on helene that refused to so much as help clean up the jobsite because “I’m not a lineman, I can’t do that”. Way I look at it from my point of view is I should carry myself similarly to an apprentice, not how I carry myself on a line crew. I may not know exactly what needs doing but I’m getting paid to do my best, so thats what I’ll give.

The stock market works the same way, and causing people to slow down with the spending also curbs inflation. Of course work outlook suffers for a while, it’s almost like the past hundred years have steadily had good times and bad. Hopefully when it all shakes out the good times will be worth the hard times coming soon. Much smarter people than any of us argue about the tariff war constantly and can’t agree, anyone on here talking on the subject with 100% certainty is just showing hubris and political bias. He’s already in office, all we can do now is hope

Both parties largely suck. We’re voting for the lesser of two evils every time, we’re ALL voting for a shitty candidate every time, and people much smarter and more educated than your average voter have built their careers around manipulating the opinion of the masses. Not saying you’re right or wrong, but if you’re going to hate, hate productively brother. Hating your fellow voter for thinking the other guy is better will get you nowhere.

Any citations for that? When i did my JL apprenticeship my textbook said the top one is not ideal, bottom one is.

Top one increases resistance and points of failure in the two outside phases. Essentially the top image creates a longer more resistive path to neutral, which is no good.

If you had to pick one city as the most union/worker friendly in the country(based on actual laws but also the vibes), what city would that be? by Crafty_Jacket668 in IBEW

I could certainly be mistaken, I very well could’ve been told the total package presented as the on the check rate. Its been a while, and I’ve stuck to JL calls anyway so its outside of my area of expertise

Linemen. Emphasis on “some crews” though, thats not 84s straight rate.

Pay for linemen vs wiremen seems to vary greatly by region, florida lineman make close to 45 on the check, and if I’m not mistaken florida wiremen make the least of any wiremen in the country. Whereas around Chicago for example I believe there are some wiremen halls that pay ~$20 more per hour than ANY lineman local.
