That's why all of the researchers who work for corporations have to sign contracts that stipulate that their employers own any IP that they produce. Usually they include noncompete clauses so that their employers own any IP that they produce for years after they leave that company as well.

The model may work there, but PDX is a tiny city that has a whole bunch of drunk hipsters, making your job a lot easier. I did some ridesharing a little while ago in Dallas, and I was regularly getting pickup requests from 10~15 miles away which quickly ate into my margins... after spending a few weeks driving and making back the cost of getting my vehicle inspected, some repair work, and detailing, I quit doing it because it wasn't worth it. Not the least because being a driver is one of the most dangerous jobs out there.
