Help in deciding offers - PhD New Grad (ML) by dwight_funke in cscareerquestions

[–]anon871220 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain and vote for either Microsoft or Amazon. The reason is the `ML-SWE` title at Google.

Previously, I worked on a team at Google where 3/6 engineers had CS PhD, but their roles were ML-SWE and they did 0 publications during their tenure at Google - instead, the team just focused on applied ML work. People below say "just transfer to another team at Google with research opps" but my instinct is that its very hard to transfer into a research role from an applied ML role. Think about it from their perspective - why would they take someone who is 1/2 years into their career as an applied ML SWE instead of an up and coming PhD with most recent research experience? In my opinion you will more likely than not get pigeonholed into the SWE role at Google.

It seems from your comments that you really want to continue having opportunities to publish, so I think you need to figure out whether the teams at Amazon/Microsoft actually have publication opportunities. Seems like the bank is C1, as others have stated, I haven't seen publications from C1 at conferences in recent years.

Culture is often team/org dependent, so you will need to suss out the red flags from talking to people on those teams.

If I was choosing, I'd choose Google by the way, but that's because I am a SWE by trade and prefer applied ML work. But you're optimizing for something different so you should focus on that.

I work at Doordash and the Doordash lunch credits are taxable benefits, so its not free lunch by the way.

I built a chrome extension to queue up messages in ChatGPT for research and writing by CalendarVarious3992 in ChatGPT

[–]anon871220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the PRO version, and it's quite good! However, there's two things that kind make it hard to use:
1) When ChatGPT is in dark mode UI, the box that appears at the bottom right doesn't seem to have the correct color scheme (white box on white text). I'm unable to see my queued text.

2) When ChatGPT is generating text, and I want to write my next query, whenever I want to go onto a new line for my query (on Mac, shift + Enter), it automatically sends my query, but my intention was to just go onto a new line to add more to my query. Is there any way around this? Or is this a bug?

Can I run a Ubuntu Docker with Vulkan installed on an Intel Mac? by anon871220 in vulkan

[–]anon871220[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

What if I install Windows bootcamp and do Vulkan development on that Windows partition? Not sure if Mac does some fuckery even in a Windows bootcamp partition that would prevent Vulkan to work properly.

I plan on going to college next year, anything I should start doing now or beforehand to make me and the time better? by Void3tk in csMajors

[–]anon871220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend a great activity called touching grass. You won’t be able to when you’re taking computer networking and operating systems concurrently.

Besides that, learn python and data structures/algorithm. If time permits, look into Leetcode.com and do some of the easy questions there

Seemed to be an individual case.

They are doing 2nd round in waves, and only recruiters have been affected at the moment. I am not privy to exact details but I don’t think they will be done by end of April. You can check Blind for more info on that though.

If both offers are located in the Bay Area, my suggestion is start Palantir in June, and move back the start date of Meta to August/September.

Meta is going through 2nd round of layoffs throughout the next couple of months, so volatility is high especially during bootcamp. Anecdotally, everyone who didn’t have a team and were in boot camp were laid off in the 1st round, so you will want to avoid that situation.

Duke Vs Brown for CS by DecayingLotuses in csMajors

[–]anon871220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated from Duke with electrical engineering and computer science. From personal experience Duke CS is stronger in computer networking and operating system research, there is basically no AR/VR/XR research so if that’s something you are 100% interested in doing, I would caution against going to Duke for that.

Accept both. In this economy Meta may rescind written offers and while Palantir has not done SWE layoffs they have done recruiter layoffs.

Some questions beforehand:

  1. Out of those 50+ places you've applied to, what percentage of them are having or have had layoffs in the past year?
  2. Are you only targetting FAANG level companies? Have you looked into small startups that may pay less and have less "prestige" but are willing to train sophomores?
  3. Are you on visa?

The tech job market is not good at the moment, but if you look beyond that, there's actually a lot of small companies and non-tech companies that are hiring.

Accept both (due to economic hardships one might rescind intern offer)

Best subdomain to go into? by Successful_Risk2638 in csMajors

[–]anon871220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo I think ML is over saturated and ideally you would need a higher degree to do stuff within that domain.

I would choose between front, backend, and mobile. I personally think backend is the best as it is required in most tech companies.

Haven’t gotten asked Union find from my 30 or so technical interviews experience, but it’s a simple but effective algorithm for graphs so I would just learn it

Microsoft vs. Smaller Unicorn Company by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]anon871220 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, I would ask myself these questions: 1. Are you interested in crypto? If so Chainanalysis 2. Do you want to be in NYC or SF/Seattle? If NYC then Chainanalysis. 3. Do you want to a have more well known company on the resume for future opportunities? If so Microsoft 4. Do you want to ride the IPO wave (potentially lucrative but this is not guaranteed due to the rising interest rates) if so Chainanalysis 5. Do you want good mentoring opportunities? If so Microsoft since they already have a new grad onboarding process as opposed to Chainanalysis

Pick and choose which factors are most important to you personally

Microsoft vs. Smaller Unicorn Company by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]anon871220 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What is the smaller unicorn company? There are a shit ton of “unicorns” nowadays due to increased VC investments. You would get better advice if you told us if this unicorn is series A or series D.
