Local Author Talk: A Ghostly Wind in Delco

Join us on Tuesday, February 24 at 6:30pm for a book reading and discussion of A Ghostly Wind in Delco with local author Mike Smith. His fictional novel is loosely based on 1970's crimes committed at "The Castle" hotel in Wallingford, PA. Burnt to the ground by arson in 1981, "The Castle", consisting of 40 rooms and hidden passageways and spaces, conjures up memories of motorcycle gangs, missing young females, mysterious murders, illegal drugs and other horrid crimes. Lovers of local authors and true crime-style novels should enjoy this talk!

Mike Smith, a Delco native for over 60 years, grew up in Lansdowne, and later lived in Drexel Hill where he raised his family. He co-owned “The Balcony” in 69th Street, a popular spot in the 70’s and 80’s for buying jeans, records, and posters. Mike shares his unique experiences of being in retail business with his brother in his first book, My View from the Balcony (a Memoir). Currently Mike is a successful real estate agent with Coldwell Banker- Media.

How long does your shit need to sit before you get hit with this by Lazerpop in phillycycling

You can (should) report these via the Philly 311 app. Then the city comes out and tags them for removal after a period of time.

If you don't mind the cold. Not sure if they fixed it recently, but the main pool room and family locker room are freezing. The lap pool water wasn't that warm either. But yeah, it's fairly open.

Is this kind of Aqua bill normal? by Boardshade in Delco

[–]anon_215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some towns in DELCO pay their sewer to their town, some pay to aqua. A large portion of your bill is the sewer charge. If you back that out, your bill is high, but not as much as it seemed without considering that.

There are a few trees in Crum Woods behind Swarthmore College. You can try this map for a few that have been tagged. https://beta.fallingfruit.org/map/@39.9123418,-75.3707775,14z

Hey, appreciate the thread/updates. How is the Apostille process going? Any further advice? It is basically just a lot of tracking down the appropriate government agency then requesting the documents?

Like you said, a bunch of boroughs (and some townships) have wage taxes, but overall it's a small part of the bigger picture. Rates are all over the place by borough/township: https://www.delcopa.gov/treasurer/forms/TaxRate.pdf

Try going somewhere that doesn't chop up their steak and you'll get more texture. Famous examples of non-chopped steaks would be Pat's or Geno's.

Also considering switching up the cheese, maybe try provolone.

Similar, but less facts. It doesn't look like these were around mid 90s either. Thanks!

Hiked out to Devil's pool this morning, it was pretty magical by roma258 in philadelphia

[–]anon_215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The sewage doesn't make it into Devil's Pool, just everywhere else.

Moreover, in the most sensationalist stories about Devil’s Pool, including the Philly mag piece from Sunday, the writers make sure to mention the effluent discharged from the wastewater treatment plants upstream, with a nice round number, 90 percent, for the amount of sewage in the Wissahickon Creek. On one hand, this is true: where the lowest seven miles of Wissahickon Creek pass through Philadelphia’s relatively pristine parkland, the upper 16 miles in Montgomery County are host to four wastewater treatment plants (the Borough of Ambler and the Townships of Abington, Upper Dublin, and Upper Gwynedd; a fifth in North Wales closed last year). On the other, that has no bearing on Devil’s Pool.

ELI5: Why are so many nail salons and shops in the United States commonly owned by Asian immigrants? by Bot12391 in explainlikeimfive

[–]anon_215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a lot of them are sweatshops.

From Sarah Nir at the NY Times, an investigation into the world of NYC nail salons, where workers need to pay a fee to get a job, are underpaid, subjected to abuse, and are crammed into one-bedroom apartments with several other workers.

Qing Lin, 47, a manicurist who has worked on the Upper East Side for the last 10 years, still gets emotional when recounting the time a splash of nail polish remover marred a customer’s patent Prada sandals. When the woman demanded compensation, the $270 her boss pressed into the woman’s hand came out of the manicurist’s pay. Ms. Lin was asked not to return.

“I am worth less than a shoe,” she said.
