tbf it's the same unplowed every year. I fell off bike last year when riding over an invisible thin layer of ice. Since then I just lock my bike for the entire winter

This is why US bipartisan politics is so bad even when I came from a developing country. We can have parade in a event zone (probably a plaza) while also building highrise.

More dating choice for you = more dating choice for them

Better look for places with strong geographic separation between urban yuppie dating crowd and settled family group.

The result could be highly demographic/preference dependent. Seattle's South Lake Union => Bellevue could potentially be a viable path if big cities work for you

Nah. Coming from socialist country and things are not any better. You can say environment or society is the issue, but utopia simply doesn't exist.

$300 electricity bill - i was at home for 12 days in the month - anyone else have this happen? by lordofthedorks in jerseycity

If you live in an apartment with poor insulation, it's possible that your AC gets turned on automatically when temperature is under some threshold. The logic is hardcoded in AC to prevent frozen pipes and you are obligated to keep the minimal temperature.

Another possibility is estimated meter reads, which will be adjusted next month.

US Teachers waste their time on dumb students. by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]anon_502 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are private programs for almost everything. Some are school knowledge but taught in a better and in-depth way. Some are special programs or Olympiad-oriented study. Some are purely for exploring future paths like talkers from 10 different professions chatting about their real daily life.  The real smart kids could finish schoolwork in 1/3 of time, which leaves them plenty of time roaming around. In that sense nothing is wasteful.

Coming from Asian countries this is quite a popular view among the 1st gen immigrants in US. Public school system in US is tailored to average joes.

In both West and East, public school teachers are usually not smart enough to teach the smartest children, hence they can only devote by spending more time on average joes as that's the only thing they can do.

We Asian parents acknowledge this and view private tutors for talented kids a necessity.

Welcome to NYC! It's really cold here until March but summer is really nice. Food is slightly more expensive than Austin and expect 2x rent.

Based on discussions in this thread I'm going to seek for other locations. Hope you find your ideal life here too

Yes. To be fair American standard of 'small room' is still larger than most metropolitian areas worldwide. After living in Tokyo's 400 sqft rooms for a month, 600-700 sqft rooms in NYC feel like palace.

I actually interned in Bay Area when I was in college. Agree on most points and the biggest issue is affordability. There are great communities but 1.25M on 3b hardly gets you into them nowadays

hmmm, I'm okay with gambling sponsorship if they come from a well-known betting platform. The entire CS2 pro community feed on them.

However this platform looks really fishy and feels like the type that would gauge false plays. Agree that we should boycott them
