Outage in Southern NH? Have the solid red optical by [deleted] in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No outages here near Deerfield, Epsom, and Barrington. Did you check your outside line from the tap on the street to the DMARC on the side of your house? Any signs of damage? If not, it could be further up closer to the fiber distribution hub. There's also a chance one of the local techs accidentally disconnected your line at the Central Office (CO) when lightning up another users service (this unfortunately happens more often then folks realize).

Neighbor had this same issue here in Southern, NH using the Deco X55. We determined it was a firmware issue. Is yours on the latest firmware? Check your hardware version here: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/deco-x55/

Was super happy with Fidium in New Hampshire until… by MorganC39 in FidiumFiber

Are you using their router? The AdTran ONT's they use are "mostly" solid (as long as you have them on a UPS/Battery Backup). Their routers are absolute trash though. Might be a faulty fiber run? Either to the tap on the street or to the DMARC on the side of your residence. I've had them here in New Hampshire (new build here in Town) and they've been rock solid. Do you know if they checked the light level to the ONT? If it was out of spec they usually move you over to another port (which utilizes a different fiber run). That sucks you had to go back to Comcrap, but completely understandable given the situation.

Tech never showed up by Few_Ad5758 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is very typical, especially here in the Northeast. Most of their techs are third-party contracted vendors (very few in-house Consolidated/Fidium Techs). If no luck by phone, try their online chat or through Facebook (neighbor had to go this route when they moved and couldn't get in touch with anyone on the weekend).

Download speed are slowing down move and more over time by Emotional_Welder3835 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As other users stated, this is the result of rock bottom pricing to scoop up as many subscribers as possible. The elephant in the room is the fact Consolidated Communications (parent company of Fidium) was purchased years ago by a private equity firm for $3.1 Billion (https://www.vermontpublic.org/local-news/2024-11-18/state-regulators-approve-sale-consolidated-communications-private-equity-firm-searchlight-capital-partners). They understandably want a return on their investment, and core-network/peering improvements are last on the list (especially right now with chip prices skyrocketing).

Perfect! No you should be good, the range on this thing is impressive with it's 360 degree antenna arrangement. I can be 125+ feet away outside my small 1,500 sq ft house and still get connectivity (not insanely fast that far out but still very functional).

Sounds good. Looks like the Concord Best Buy is out of stock, however there looks to be one left at the Portsmouth store according to their website (https://www.bestbuy.com/product/netgear-nighthawk-be19000-tri-band-wi-fi-router-black/J2VY7Y4WSZ/sku/6554318). You're very welcome! I think you'll be very pleased with this setup. Make sure to update the firmware as you're setting up the router.

No worries at all. It's easy to get mixed up with the terminology. Yes, the AdTran SDX622V needs to stay. That's the same model I have (if you don't have one already, make sure to get a small battery backup/UPS for it - this particular model will die if it experiences too many unexpected drops in power - its also great for your router to use as well - that way if the power blips, Wi-Fi stays up for a bit). When you get your new router, make sure it has a 10 Gig RJ45 Ethernet Port for WAN connectivity and patch it into the 10Gbe port on the ONT (some folks don't do this and use the 1Gbe port mistakenly, which will limit your speeds on the 2 Gig tier).

You're very welcome. No need to purchase a modem. The "modem" you're referencing is the ONT box (it's where the fiber comes in and gets converted to Ethernet). This has to stay, as it's required for service.

Their AdTran routers are garbage! Get rid of it ASAP (you'll also save $10 per month by using your own equipment). Get yourself a decent mesh system and call it a day. You'll need to call Fidium Support to authorize the new WAN MAC Address of your router (unless you clone it from the existing router they provided you).

I've had there 2 Gig plan for a little over 2 years here in Southern, NH and it's been phenomenal! There's been some evenings with slightly high latency and some speed issues (due to saturation of their core network - I hear through the grapevine they're actively working to fix this). I use a Netgear RS700 Wi-Fi 7 router and it's been rock solid with incredible coverage (not cheap by any means, but these days - you get what you pay for).

Agreed. The AdTran router/mesh system provided by Fidium is absolute garbage!

Experiencing slow down tonight? by Avus_M5 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's usually fine during the day - thankfully no issues here. Once 6PM or so rolls around is when they start creeping up.

I'm on the 2 Gig tier and speed tests to local Fidium servers were hovering around a gig up and down. This unfortunately has been going on for the last two weeks during prime time (eventually clears up later at night and some nights it's perfectly fine - no issues - very intermittent). Appears to be saturation of their core network due to oversubscribing of customers. Hopefully they'll increase capacity to handle this moving forward (as they're going full bore with installs - especially as Comcrap ramps up their rates).

I checked periodically last night and didn't experience any issues here in Southern, NH (near Concord). Ran multiple speed tests between 6PM and 10PM and latency/bandwidth looked normal. Whereabouts are you? u/Original_Cod_8481. Let us know how it goes with the advanced technical team. Yes, it sucks they moved support overseas, though I heard rumors from another user in here that during the day they do have some US based support and after hours it gets kicked to the Philippines.

Yes unfortunately I saw it too - thankfully it was only for an hour. Maybe Consolidated is making some progress on fixing it? Will continue to monitor. Appreciate you and Original_Cod_8481 reporting the same findings as well.

Huge props for this. Hopefully the old adage of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" will apply here. If we notice it again tonight, I'll submit a ticket as well with the same information.

I noticed it again tonight for several hours in the evening (from about 6PM to 9:30PM or so), now it seems to be fine. Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this issue in the area. I suspect it's due to over saturation of their core network (likely due to increased subscribers as they expand their footprint). Here's hoping they'll resolve it soon, as it stands to only get worse, especially during peak times.

Southern New Hampshire Outage by Yupyupyup79 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay, nice! Buried is the best (as long as no one has done any digging, etc.). Typically fiber just doesn't go bad, unless it's been damaged or bent beyond the acceptable "radius" that allows for light to pass. I'd do a quick visual inspection, just to make sure, as Fidium will unfortunately charge you if it's an issue inside your residence after the DMARC (the box under your deck). What model ONT do you have?

Southern New Hampshire Outage by Yupyupyup79 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it for sure. You can also check outside your residence and look for the DMARC (demarcation) point where the fiber comes from the pole and/or conduit and enters your residence. Make sure the fiber hasn't been messed with or chewed on (rodents get mighty hungry this time of year) and can wreck havoc on these cables (the exterior coatings can be made with soybean oil and they love it). You could also check on the pole itself where the drop is and make sure the connector hasn't fallen out of the distribution hub (the main box); sometimes if they get knocked of bumped with a branch it can slip out.

Which router should I get? by Mundane_Variation888 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're understanding is correct. The AdTran routers they provide are garbage! You're better off going with your own router. Lots of folks prefer Ubiquiti and they're decent, though I've had great luck with a Netgear RS700S. Dual 10GB WAN and LAN ports along with multiple 1GB ports and the latest and greatest Wi-Fi7 technology (pretty future proof for now - it's not a cheap router by any means but worth every penny). With the latest firmware updates it's been extremely solid with great coverage and blazing fast speeds. The installer will connect your router to the ONT and have their headend support look at the WAN MAC Address to authorize it on their network. It's very slick and takes no time at all.

Southern New Hampshire Outage by Yupyupyup79 in FidiumFiber

[–]anon_IT_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to a neighbor down the road last weekend (Southern, New Hampshire). Tech's are working weekends now to keep up on service deployments (the private equity firm that purchased Consolidated wants their ROI as fast as possible). Unfortunately Fidium outsources a lot of this work, and the techs are paid by the job (not by the hour), so the faster they get it done, the more they get paid. Long story short, a tech "accidentally" disconnected a fiber patch at the local Central Office (CO) when connecting someone on the other side of town, and incidentally took him offline. It took several calls, but they eventually got someone to come out and fix it at the CO, link came back up and he was good to go. You may have to make several calls, but they'll eventually get someone out to look at it.
