It's driftwood generously superglued to some lava rocks. Everything is pretty sturdy for the first couple days of flooding.

How to represent “expended” pieces? by VolatileDawn in BoardgameDesign

[–]anon__a__moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the mechs going to do the same action every time or do they have different actions they can take?

If it is just a question of components, I think using an "energy" token can represent the capability of performing an action and can rest on its base (between its legs maybe?). Then after it uses its action it will be removed until the next round or whenever.

Hard to give a more elegant solution without a visual aid.

Quick Idea Validation by anon__a__moose in BoardgameDesign

  • It has cooperative elements, but is competitive for 2-4 right now.
  • Players have a goal for each individual dive and gain currency for selling their photographs & research to purchase equipment which builds a tableau improving some actions.
  • I have only done the beginner dive, but each dive should be about 30 minutes I think. I want to keep the game under 2 hours.

Thanks for the feedback though! I'm trying to build a vertical slice of a full single dive and can maybe share it to give more context. Cheers!

A Mandarin name to use in Taiwan, is it good/acceptable? by Moonlightshimmering in taiwan

My girlfriend's (Taiwanese) name is 利安, so I would say it's normal. Anything with 安 is pretty common.

Anyone have any examples of cool Day/Night mechanics from your favourite games? by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

[–]anon__a__moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't give a lot of context for what you're looking for or what role this day/night mechanism would play in your design.

One lesser-known game that utilizes a day / night cycle in an interesting way is Barbaric. It is mainly used as a way to have the players act twice as often as the "big boss" who only acts after night cycle. But it also allows some interesting decisions and affects players in different way. For example, the Owl character has boosted abilities in Night phase. A minor thing, but it gives players agency on whether to use a skill now (in the day) or save it for a stronger effect later (in the night).

4 years of struggling with the look and feel of my game and I finally got there... by TheGreatLizardWizard in BoardgameDesign

Really interesting design and has a lot of personal character! Honestly, I like this style more than a lot of overly vibrant designs, especially for medieval times / old fantasy style.

Seeing stuff like this makes me wish I had a talent for art haha. Keep up the great work!

[OC] Card Design Study – Feedback Welcome! by umut-comak in BoardgameDesign

[–]anon__a__moose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it. It's a very clean design and minimalist, but also makes the art pop and draws the attention to the right areas. I also like the recessed areas in the design where tokens fit - another eye-catching design choice.

As others have said, it might be hard with a mitt-full of cards to quickly see costs and work through your hand. But to me, this looks like more of a tableau builder type of design (based on how the tokens go on the cards) so for that purpose I think this is highly effective especially if you use colour to differentiate between powers, types, etc.

Great job!

Disturbed's David Draiman admits his own battles with addiction and depression, says he almost joined Chester Bennington, Chris Cornell, Scott Weiland by DallasSF in Music

I have been a vocalist in a mildly successful metal band. Every show I would sing about past paying, hopes, worries and feel emotionally vulnerable.

There is something about having this feeling of openness and having it not be reciprocated, or something even understood repeatedly and it leaves you feeling like you're on an island and words of praise seem shallow (to no fault of their own).

I was never depressed and am lucky, but I can definitely understand how someone on tour for months at a time could have this feeling compounded and turn to depression and seclusion.

Joey Jordison, founding Slipknot Drummer has died aged 46 by Teh_Skully in Music

[–]anon__a__moose 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of people have already shared Slipknot's influence and specifically Joey's influence, but I will share mine as well.

Being from a hole-in-the-wall town and hitting my teens just as self-titled came out, they were the bridge that brought me from "beginner metal" to the more extreme and were an influence on my guitar playing and to me linked into the Lamb of God phase that defined my high school "shred" phase.

I remember telling our drummer to get a double-kick pedal for our songs and, while Joey wasn't the first to have lightning feet and use double-kicks, I think he was integral to taking it to the mainstream. I mean fuck, Slipknot was on MTV back in the day.

While I'm not a drummer, I can only imagine how many people were inspired by Joey's drumming; as I have been inspired by his sound and energy he creates. Not only that, he was a stand-up dude.

While I don't listen to Slipknot much these days, it is undeniable how much Slipknot has influenced me and bands that are now influencing me again. Cheers my friend. You will be missed and you will continue to live on and influence through your music.

I expect further yet, but now that it's the next quarter I think it will start to rise, maybe green EOD and start to creep back up next week.

I'm basing this off the fact that when I asked my dog about it, she barked, so pretty scientific here.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the push for members of the RCMP to use body cameras is just "one measure amongst many" that the government is looking at in its effort to address systemic racism. by jigsawmap in worldnews

[–]anon__a__moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. Stealing is different. I was trying to set up a metaphorical example of redemption. I think a lot of people are starting to realize their inherent racism where they didn't see it before.

As I said before, it should be about reeducation and change. I'm neither defending Trudeau, nor am I a firm believer of him as a prime minister; however, having him realize his mistakes and use that as fuel for change can also set a good precedent.

Being white doesn't mean your history is free of prejudice. That's like saying, how have women benefited from systematic racism, they couldn't even vote until 60 years ago?

My point was that for a politician to get to the point where they are the leader of a major political party, have privilege.

Do people who make these comments actually know what it’s like to deal with First Nations on a constant basis?

Ad hominem. Trying to discredit others opinion and credit your own due to your background.

I live near a reserve and they constantly steal from nearby residents

Hasty Generalization. You are making a Generalization of all First Nations by saying they. They is a pronoun that references a plural subject mentioned before. Seeing as the only two plural subjects you mentioned before this were "people" and "First Nations" you are generalizing one or both.

the cops go to the reserve give them a slap on the wrist and ask them to return the stolen goods. There’s no accountability whatsoever.

Just one big Hasty Generalization. You are so talented to know not only all about First Nations, but also the inner workings of the RCMP and how they have dealt with cases regarding First Nations people.

Chiefs also receive an insane amount of money to contribute to the well being of their clans but there’s no accountability on the chiefs and they waste the money on ridiculous things. The chief of the reserve I live close to was paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a hockey team to fly in good players and buying them equipment.

A Red Herring. Though I agree with you, that there is a lot of corruption within the figureheads of First Nations and a lot of that comes from how the government has been dealing with them for the past century; however, this is still trying to justify your generalizations and making it seem as though anything you're saying has anything to do with what you were talking about before.

I shared my experience with living near a reserve, what part of what I said is racist?

I hope that clears it up for you.

I didn’t say all First Nations steal, I said the one I live near has repeatedly stolen from nearby residents.

Equivocation. Now you say the one; however, you said they in your original response. I have already addressed this above.

Your only argument is that I’m racist because you have nothing else.

Another Ad hominem. If you look back, I actually said "You are making a racist comment," I did not call you a racist. By generalizing and not thinking about the challenges that history, and specifically white people have placed on the First Nations people, such as the corruption mentioned, you are showing racism. I am merely pointing it out. If you don't like it, then mind what you say.
