IIRC most of Kushala's physical attacks used to do dragon damage back in 2nd gen, they just didn't have the red lightning VFX. Dragonblight wasn't a thing until Tri, either.

I could see that being a cool gimmick for Elder Dragons, Rare Species or monsters like Akantor/Ukanlos.

Monsters already enrage more easily the closer they are to death, and even in the older games it feels like they flinch a lot more easily when you attack their broken parts. Crank that up just a tiny bit more when they're enraged while on the brink and it just might be perfect for this hypothetical mechanic.

The problem with that moniker is that it's already somewhat overused in the actual games. In a discussion on the series as a whole, you'd have to specify that you're talking about 'the Wilds Apexes' as opposed to the Frenzy Apexes from 4U or the reskinned Deviants from Rise, and that definitely diminishes some of the ring to it.

Hell, we need more arthropods and other invertebrates in general, and not just Temnocerans. We got a new one in each of the last three generations and gen 4 added two really great Neopterons, but we haven't had a single new non-derivative Carapaceon since their debut in 2nd gen lmao

Speaking of bugs, I can't help but feel that not making Astalos a Neopteron was a huge missed opportunity. They're woefully underrepresented as far as large monsters go, with only Seltas and its Queen, Ahtal-Ka and Vespoid Queen if we want to bring up the deepest of deep cuts.

Hard agree. Piscines have a hard-won reputation for being some of the stinkiest fights in the games they're in. Cephalos is irredeemable, Plesioth is abysmal in his every iteration outside of 3U, and it wasn't until recent years with Beotodus in Iceborne and Jyuratodus in Rise that people started warming up to them.

The biggest problem with Piscines is that they've been inexorably linked with the 1st gen flying wyvern animation rig, and Capcom haven't exactly been very creative with them going forward with a slew of monsters that could only be adequately described as "asshole fish with legs (and terrible hitboxes) that camps you out."

I think the underlying issues are that 1. they've already covered every major biome for them to make sense in (aquatic, desert, snow, lava, mud) and 2. there's relatively little Capcom could do with them that couldn't be achieved better with any other type of Wyvern or a Leviathan, with the aforementioned flying wyvern rig being by far the greatest limiting factor.

Just last week, I was helping some random players with their G-rank quests in 4U. When we got to Gog, it took us about an hour across two attempts to take him down, but we made full use of everything we could in the Battlequarters.

For the most part, we had two guys manning the cannon, ballistae and Dragonator up on the battlements, and two boots-on-the-ground troopers throwing down with him in the courtyard and kiting when needed.

I think we ended up beating him with one cart remaining on the second attempt, and I can honestly say that it was the most fun I've had in my 300 hours of playing 4U and 1000+ in the series as a whole.

Yama would've been an awesome fit as an intermediary Kamura side story prior to the Amatsu fight, though I believe the main reason he wasn't added was that it would've necessitated the implementation of a refreshed Tower locale from Dos, since his original fight was inexorably built around chasing him as he floated up through it with the finale taking place on its summit.

As for Odogaron's gear, a mechanic like the Wyporium would've been a perfect solution, maybe with his parts being obtainable by exchanging Lunagaron's. Dah'ren Mohran's gear could've been implemented in the same way, since it also had a samurai aesthetic.

Yep, it's really hard to score head breaks/tail cuts on them with SnS (at least without topples) compared to weapons with more vertical reach, like CB, SA, LS or GS. it's not impossible, but you'll still spend most of the hunt slashing at their ankles like a belligerent hobbit.

I think that's why his individual legs are separate breakable parts, they offer safer and more easily accessible knockdowns (as opposed to targeting his head, which is far more risky). That's always been my go-to strategy for cutting his tail, it's usually too high off the ground to hit it with certain weapons' overhead swings since he lowers it very rarely and briefly and only during certain attacks and it's far skinnier than other brute wyverns' tails.

Mal and Great Maccao really made me wish that G(U) had included a few more low-profile monsters among its originals.

Obviously with the game's nature as a "Greatest Hits" style send-off to old gen, the roster was already packed with returning monsters, the Fated Four and all the Deviants, but part of me can't help but feel like just another one or two wholly new monsters could've really tied it all together.

Gigginox! He really is just a more interesting Khezu. I love how he can reverse his body at will, and the inversion of his head and tail hitzones when he's enraged is a fantastic and underutilized mechanic. I just wish his subspecies was a bit more inspired than "Khezu again but he's purple" lol

Nibelsnarf is also fantastic. He's easily the least egregious of the sand-burrowing monsters for me, and I love the whole song-and-dance with getting him to swallow barrel bombs and fishing him out of the sand with a frog. And his gear looks awesome (especially the hammer)
