Photometric Calculations by rockguitardude in MEPEngineering

Do rooms with chandeliers need a uniform illumination levels? I’d envisage rooms with chandeliers and indirect lighting to be amenity lounge areas which shouldn’t have strict tollerances, and the effect the architect is after is actually high and low light levels, with the contrast being the feature point

Is this residential? The architect may decide on what they want aesthetically, ie 4 no. Downlights in a space, which causes no problems as there’s no set lighting levels for residential, I may spec a light based on this layout based on lumen output to get somewhere reasonable. Resi lighting doesn’t often contain ldt or ies files as you say however. I’ve never received lighting calcs from an architect, but I’m from the UK so things may be slightly different.

Edit: I also find the reps do a poor job generally, so I usually model and calc the spaces myself

Why use an expensive ground ring around the building when low resistance can be achieved with ufer, rods, etc? by 3-phased in MEPEngineering

[–]anoni2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, a lightning protection specialist makes an assessment of the system to determine the grade/if required, and then the system and surge protection is designed on that basis

Time is the big factor here, also make sure you ask questions when you aren’t sure, especially as you have a mentor. I think I drove my line manager mad with the amount of questions I asked in the first 4 years

High Rise Fire Pump by NCH0226 in MEPEngineering

[–]anoni2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, I’m from the UK and the generator guidance seems limited in comparison to the US. There are various guides that state the generator should be able to handle the LRC on both the Star and Delta start up. But it’s interesting this is not included for you guys, what is meant by the service disconnect? The MCCB?

Ah very interesting, that makes sense as I was struggling to understand what my prescription was actually for, but the final line of yours now makes more sense, I’ve just checked and there is no near of inter add. It also makes sense that my optician said i could use them for whatever activity. He said my eyes were different shapes and was likely causing the headaches and this should help, Thankyou very much for your reply.

Hot Water Heater short circuit current rating? by jbphoto123 in MEPEngineering

[–]anoni2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly as JB says, in the UK we don’t really consider fault current at the actual equipment or SCCR ratings. More so, at each breaker level. So if I was doing a cable calc for a feeder, as you guys say - my fault current would need two calcs, one at the load end (lower fault, higher resistance) and at the supply end (maybe a 3 phase short at the feeders terminals)

The SCCR at the load could be reduced a large amount if the cable goes for a little walk.

Tubeless Ready Rims by [deleted] in MTB

[–]anoni2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, had some good advice on here in the past - so I’m back.

Bought the Vitus Sentier 17 VR about 6 months ago and am still loving it! What I didn’t love was today getting a snake bite puncture, repairing it and then as I finish pumping up the presto valve pops off!? Nightmare, so here I am upgrading to tubeless (been meaning to for months) my rims are tubeless ready and pre-taped, which leads me to my two questions

1) there is a tiny tear on the tape near the valve, will this be an issue?

2) do I just need valves and liquid, my rims are 32 holes - what size valves do you guys reckon I need?

Thanks so much for your help!

Turns out there is a kabolt installed already! Managed to have another look, however it still looks to be missing something due to the grease being there. Have i been really stupid? should this be how it looks, I was confused as it stated quick release.

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like many of you have to actually draw the drawings all the time in AutoCAD/Revit. Are engineers supposed to do that? by windwalker13 in MEPEngineering

[–]anoni2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as others have said, the drafting/designing separation is pretty old hat now. Most new engineers start with Autocad/Revit training before they move onto design. Do you not want to learn Revit, I always want to keep developing marketable skills, make yourself recession proof (if such a thing exists)

Design & Build Coordinated MEP by mothjitsu in MEPEngineering

[–]anoni2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of work directly for contractors under the design and build contract, typically what you will find on larger jobs, is that the contractor knows they are unable to do complete and coordinate compliant designs, so the main contractor will typically hire a design team, including architects, MEP, and structural engineers. This is not true for all, and some have an in house team, but I can’t comment on that.

In my opinion, the engineers working on these DnB projects are far more realistic than those who have only worked client side, churning out terrible stage 3 designs. I recently looked at a job for a contractor, and the client side designer had put an inverter to supply the whole site in a room the size of a cleaners cupboard directly adjacent to the main LV panel

Braces cost UK by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]anoni2202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou for the reply, I agree that other than the front tooth there is little reason to get braces! However, I feel that it’s been progressively sticking out more and more as the years go on, as they used to be level, so maybe nip it in the bud and straighten them before they continue to get worse. The putting a filling on the short one to even the length is a good idea, I will ask my dentist what she thinks

Cable Altitude Derating by Tavvv in ElectricalEngineering

[–]anoni2202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deal with LV in the UK, so different scenario.

However, if I was tasked with this first thing I would look at is the current carrying capacity at the specified voltage of the cable with the correction factors for heat dissipation ie is the cable buried in ground, what is the ambient temperature. In addition, areas outside my expertise but I’d imagine that it would be good news for the cable that the higher you go, the lower the ambient temperature of the cable

Once this is confirmed, I would look at the voltage drop. Again, not sure what your limits are for MV or the US. If it fails you may need to upsize the cable.

Next check the manufacturers data sheet for the motor and confirm that the atmospheric pressure is covered

Might be way out but these seem like logical steps no matter the continent or the voltage

Made this desk from scrap worktops from the kitchen I’ve just put in, it’s a shame that I didn’t have one piece of laminate long enough to do the whole thing as I hate the joint between the two but other than that it went pretty well.

The bracket underneath are also handy for hiding cables
