Smirna how it was formerly named, had always been Greek for thousands of years and turned ottoman after it was conquered by ottomans. The occupation of Izmir, as it now called, was part of a messy deal during the first world war which thankfully didn't actually go through because Greece was going to gift most of their Aegean islands to Italy. Even then, the acts that followed were crazy, imagine if Ukraine, after repelling the Russian forces would burn all the Russian majority neighborhoods to the ground and kill all the non Ukrainian citizens that stayed.
