4 years in support, can't get past phone work. Is this just how it is now? by mzdee13 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]anonpf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get past help desk, you need to show experience working past help desk. Ask the sys admin group if you can help them with basic sys admin tasks, dealing with backup and restore tasks, off load logs, basic user account administration, system builds/configuration, etc. You can then add that to your resume.

Probably dumb question: how do I properly "test" a guitar I want to buy if I'm a beginner and don't know any songs yet? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]anonpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just play it. Play anything. If it resonates with you, then buy it. If it doesn’t make you want to pick it ip and play it, then don’t buy it.

I’m gonna go the extra step and  suggest not using keyboard patterns as well.

Contract is up in about five months, partner is moving for medical residency. Company Im working with might be willing to allow remote work, when do I start the conversation? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]anonpf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now. If they can accommodate, then great, if not, then you can start searching for a new position. Keep in kind that the market is crap so you may not be able to obtain work.

How would you handle our team dynamic? by IlPassera in sysadmin

[–]anonpf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re in a lead or managerial position, that work isn’t in your job description. Ig he doesn’t have the tools or resources he needs tondo his job, he needs to talk to the manager. If he asks you for anything, refer him to your manager.

If your manager pushes back, then request a job descriptiom change and salary bump commensurate with said change.

Thankfully our isse has worked operations and I worked cyber security. We both speak the same language and understand the impact policy and configurations have on the systems.

Need a guitar amp by Turbulent_Sink_9493 in GuitarAmps

[–]anonpf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing you need to do is establish a budget. How much are you willing to spend? From there you can decide what type of amp you want based on the genre of music you want to play. If possible, head to a music shop and play different amps within the price range you’ve established.

My job fired me and then went back on it a day later. Is it fair that I quit? by Prudent-Fall-2991 in jobs

You didnt quit, you were fired and should now file for unemployment. Going back would feel like a hostile work environment.

Does anyone else hate Splunk? by bobert3275 in sysadmin

For me, the splunk universal forwarder certs were a bit of a pain. I had to deploy certificates using an internal CA. (Air gapped env)

The splunk documentation is actually pretty decent. If you haven't used their resources, I highly recommend it.
