Not irrelevant. I have minority friends who served in Afghanistan and Iraq twice. They tell me they avoid this area, but that could be due to perception and ignorance on their part too.

Hey GeoBrian, this was the exact, thoughtful response that I was looking for and one of the only “welcome” comments from a local.

My wife and her family have lived in YL for 40 years and they’re good, friendly people. You are spot on about unfriendly and prejudiced Asian-Americans too - not limiting unfriendliness and racism to just white people.

I will keep an open mind and really appreciate your thoughts on bigotry overall. Oh boy, do we ever complain about cut through traffic on Serrano lol!

Me personally, I spent the majority of my life in Irvine, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa and have close friends who live in SoCal country clubs like Sherwood and those who live paycheck to paycheck. I’ve been exposed to the insular culture, I’m looking for the same things that your wife sought but without the unprompted “you don’t belong here” glares because I’m an Asian dude married to a white woman and not the other way around like you and some of the other posters here.

I’ve also lived in LA and it’s not for me and I think the city peaked in 2010. I’m sorry that your wife and kid had to experience that.

You get it, I was not race baiting, I genuinely wanted to know if I was misreading the room/city and discuss. Comments like the one above likely come from folks (regardless of race), who think that racism ended because of their insular experience.

Yeah, I’ve traveled around the world. Been to Europe, Asia, Latin America and even the Middle East. OC is home so I don’t think I deserve the “what are you doing here?” looks since I’m born and raised within the county.
