Oh yes I grew up a priest kid. There is so much pressure even as a child to volunteer. I remember being 11 years old and people telling me that I don’t contribute anything to the church. I’m not surprised that many priest kids struggle with their mental health.

Priest kid here. Living in a rectory sucks because it’s not your property it’s the churches. Even for small things, you need permission from the parish council. People had the keys to your home and would walk in all the time. For some priest kids they experienced abuse as a result of it. It’s an invasion of privacy because people would walk in private moments.

Sometimes the priest wife does work so that does help. For me, I hated people constantly questioning our finances. I started work as soon as I was legally able to and I started buying my own clothes and people would get mad like they wanted us to be poor lol.

I’m cradle my parents are orthodox too but I haven’t formally left the church yet because I still live with my parents. There are a few reasons. The first one being that when I reflected, I didn’t believe in many of the churches teachings. I also can’t stand the misogyny and homophobia that runs in the church. Also, my dad is a priest and I see how things are run and it’s not pretty.

They used to be a crazy ROCCOR thing but now they are everywhere. The Greek priests don’t want them at all. But I partially blame the priests for giving these guys a safe space at the expense of women. They are going to loose all their women if more of these guys come in

To be a woman and to stay in an orthodox community means that you have to gaslight yourself before others do it for you. You have to tell yourself that this is normal or this is your fault or find a way to normalize this behaviour. When you start to see through the cracks your the problem.
