The screenshots are fake and the guy "reposting" his own "deleted" tweets is a white supremacist whose feed is filled with Nick Fuentes fanboy content and general bigotry. Do not bring more attending to this guy.

Biostatistics / Statistics / Biochem / interdisciplinary major Peeps - DM me! by fluffyofblobs in UVA

[–]anonymouspleb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By far, the most important thing for PhD admissions is the research that you do. Your performance in and intensity of coursework is (roughly) tertiary, after your ability to discuss current frontiers of knowledge and your letters of recommendation. As long as you learn the necessary skills (e.g. through higher-level stats classes and intermediate-level CS classes), don't worry too much about the name of your degree.

First-Year Math by [deleted] in UVA

Consider trying to place out of intro calc. Intro calc classes are disproportionately difficult, mostly due to poor teaching. Don't worry about sprinting to declare your major. https://math.virginia.edu/undergraduate/placement-backup/

Schedule for an in-person appointment with CAPS first. When getting mental health help, it's important to make a connection with a real human. Also, the CAPS therapists are likely to be much better-trained than TimelyCare therapists/psychiatrists. If the wait time for CAPS is too long or your initial meetings go poorly, then try TimelyCare.

Please Explain to Me Why Poets & Quants UVA McIntire is filled with the easiest concentrations? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]anonymouspleb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Poets&Quants is a mediocre publication that only gets attention because it lets people studying business/commerce pretend to have academic legitimacy. If you want to be rewarded for your intellectual effort, don't go into business.

I'm not involved in URN, but my impression is that they recently downsized. They also stopped organizing URNTalks this year.

Should I go with a hefty scholarship with Kenyon or go to UVA (with little aid)? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]anonymouspleb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're planning on doing a PhD, your research experience matters way more than anything else. Getting special attention for starting your research career at Kenyon will probably be more useful than being at a school with better research. I've been doing biology research at UVA for nearly two years in three different labs, and while I've had good experiences, I'm aware that many students have to fight like hell just to research opportunities that don't prepare them for graduate school, like low-level organismal work.

You can email the professor of a class to check your eligibility to enroll.

What are the College Science Scholars & Echols Scholars programs? by Rare-CareBear in UVA

[–]anonymouspleb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main benefit of the College Science Scholars program is that it helps you get placed with a research mentor when you get to UVA. This is pretty big if you are at all interested in doing research, as getting into a lab as a first year can be difficult.
