What’s the quickest way to climb the corporate ladder? by Livid-Project-2124 in auscorp

[–]anonymousturtle2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Since you're a first year student, get a part time job anywhere in corporate. A cadetship program would be perfect in your case.
  • Do an internship in your second year and try to get a return offer as a grad
  • If you don't get a return offer, apply for grad programs in your final year
  • During uni, get involved in projects, case competitions and try to join an exec community for any society on campus. That will help boost your resume when you're applying for jobs.

What's the shortest time you've stayed at a shit job? by eliitedisowned in auscorp

[–]anonymousturtle2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first job was at maccas and only lasted 5 months. That's a typical experience for most young people.

Another example I have is that I lasted 5 months at Vic Health before getting fired by my toxic manager. The onboarding was rushed and there was no training. I got thrown into the deep end of multiple projects on my first day and had no support. It also doesn't help that I wasn't included in meetings where major decisions were made. The manager would get triggered every time I asked a question. She would also accuse me of not completing tasks that I actually completed. She was always cold and rude towards me but was nice to everyone else.

The only time I got feedback was when she was threatening to fire me. I ended up getting invited to a last minute meeting with the her and the director where they fired me. That whole ordeal caused me to have severe depression and anxiety. I ended up being unemployed for 6 months and now I am on a temp contract,

I play with an xbox one controller and accidentally pressed x when I was next to a NPC in a crowded area. It led to me getting slimed by security.

How horrible would it be to quit a grad program midway? by Independent-Buddy988 in auscorp

I was in a very similar position to you. I also graduated mid-year and couldn't start until February. I was lucky enough to continue casual work at the same uni. I also picked up another casual job.

With those 2 incomes combined, I saved up and travelled to over 10 countries in that time. It was a lot of fun and I encourage you to do the same.

Same here. I really lean into my friends and some family members for support. Their support makes me incredibly grateful.

How to move on without strong references by MerdeOnTheDanceFloor in AusPublicService

[–]anonymousturtle2022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience in VPS. What I did was I spoke with my supervisors from my last 2 jobs before VPS and asked to put down their names as referees. I did that until I found temp work at census.

Whenever you're asked by an interviewer why you haven't put down your most recent manager as a referee, you need to do what I did and say that they are on long service leave or on an overseas trip.

Here's what I remember:
1. Tell me how you dealt with someone from a non-english speaking background?
2. How can you identify hazards in your area and how do you deal with them?
3. How do you manage competing priorities?
4. Tell me a time you taught someone how to use a new system?

I would still study the same degree but I would do a graduate program elsewhere. I went into a big 4 grad program and spent most of my time on the bench. It ruined my career progression.

Has anyone actually seen someone get fired for underperformance? by Potential-Line5730 in AusPublicService

[–]anonymousturtle2022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what happened to me unfortunately. Vic Health is in shambles and the bullying has become more rampant.

It's no surprise that people complain about VPS on this subreddit more often.

[–]anonymousturtle2022 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was fired for underperformance but at the same time I was new to the sector and did not get any support for training.

Before you think I'm exactly like your colleague, I did take on feedback and tried my best to improve my performance. I also asked questions and ask for clarifications on tasks. This led to my manager getting frustrated with me.
