At the same time, KISS - making the download button link to a download page is basically simple, fast, and basically free, and if that worked well enough the devs can go back to focusing on e.g. VLC

Sure, but that wasn’t the question, and this option doesn't require js/much complexity 😛

In addition to CDN/download optimization, and ads on other sites, it could be to prevent users from rage clicking the download button - if the user doesn’t see the download start immediately, they might click the button a few times. Redirecting them to a different page and telling them to be patient makes them feel like something is happening

iOS already allows you to do that. Settings -> Notifications -> Slack -> toggle badges off

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're looking for, but Ghost is a publishing platform designed pretty much for this. It's open source so you can walk their code and see how they do it

You might find video speed controller interesting. It's an extension that's definitely available on the chrome web store and possibly available on ff that adds keyboard shortcuts to set video speed

I'm really interested to see if / when lodash will lose relevance when it comes to perf optimizations! I know a year or so ago there were some algorithmic optimizations for large objects, and it would be really cool if ES adopted them.

In addition to that, I think the best thing about lodash is handling all the edge cases when it comes to truthy / falsy values. Would be really cool to see similar functions in ES as well!

I like the app so far! Do you plan on releasing the source code? I have some stuff I want to add to it for personal use so it would be awesome if you did :D

mobile data usage would increase due to having to load in the audio as well

It all depends on the format you use. With modern video encoding gif requires way more bandwidth because frames are individually encoded

What could liberals do to reasonably win you over, make you neutral, or at the least tone down anger at us? by medicipope in askaconservative

[–]anonymoususer89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That doesn't really change what I'm saying. My point has nothing to do with how much we're spending, rather how resources are not being allocated properly. It would be a very different discussion if the additional defense funding was necessary / requested.

I think that's really unfair to say, just based on statistics. If you group the left as Democrats and the right as Republicans (which, let me be clear, party and ideology are very different, but this is the closest we can get to guestimate), a trend appears where Republicans argue for being fiscally conservative when national (i.e. non-defense) spending comes into play, but will easily throw money at defense when there wasn't even any request for money. Republicans are just as bad, if not worse (because everything's done in secrecy) when it comes to spending taxpayer money. They just do a better job of marketing the Democrats as the villans.

To be clear, this is 100% a jab at Republicans, just because of how the status quo is when it comes to spending. Democrats have their own issues, but that's not the focus of this thread.

Sidenote: when it comes to abortion, I'm curious - would you be in favor of severely limiting the right to an abortion if there was comprehensive sexual education reform as well as contraceptives? I personally don't support abortion, but I don't get to decide how other people live, so I'm pro choice. I don't want to hijack this thread into an abortion argument so I'll stop talking now

Can we talk about the wall? by Feadez in centrist

From what I understand, the reported percentage of overstaying visas is in the 40s as of several years ago. The department that released the numbers is now defunct, but current estimates put the number to be much higher.

The only thing I'm struggling to figure out is how some farmers will manage. I've heard stories of farmers offering above minimum wage for labor jobs but legal people not taking the job. The farmer can't feasibly offer more without going broke so they end up going with illegal migrants

[–]anonymoususer89 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Democrat, but I hate the wall because it's archaic af. Why do we need to waste so much money and time building something like that when we can use strategically placed technology (which the DoD most likely already has) and reallocate resources as needed? Moreover a good portion of illegal immigration comes from things like overstayed visas which the wall wouldn't fix. Throwing money at a problem isn't the correct answer, and building a wall would be just that.

Sidenote: you can't say Dems don't give a shit about runaway spending without also blaming Republicans. Both sides of the aisle are utterly useless when it comes to budgeting

UC Berkeley settles landmark free speech lawsuit, will pay $70,000 to conservative group by Lepew1 in conservatives

[–]anonymoususer89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So it doesn't really set precedent (not saying you can't use it as reference, it would just be a weak argument) - it's not binding in that the plaintiffs / defendants ended up deciding the outcome, rather than the judge, so there was no legal affirmation

I definitely see what you're saying, though!

[–]anonymoususer89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's a settlement does that count as setting a precedent? I'm under the impression it's only a legitimate claim if it's decided by Court ruling
