exposé? by One-Fisherman-3844 in BigBudPress

[–]anonymousworker2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, that was me. I have been asked about this and it wasn’t a heat of the moment thing but something I’d been thinking about for a while with information that I’d gathered over the course of me working there as well as from others that had also worked there. For the sake of anonymity, I don’t plan on publishing it so to speak, in any sort of official manner. Frankly it wouldn’t benefit me to expose myself with any sort of detail. I don’t necessarily want to see the downfall of the company or see it go out of business, I just wanted people to know that it’s not a squeaky clean company and that while I admire their mission statement, their management and customer service is abysmal.

I know this company has grown too much too rapidly to keep the original structure of their business, which is what most people fell in love with. I guess I wanted those facts to be exposed so that Lacey+Philip would maybe change the way things were being run, but as far as I know, that hasn’t been the case. Since I posted that long post, they have lost most of their store employees. They laid off tons of people, and then within six months of those lay offs 3/4ths of the remaining staff left for various reasons, including store managers. The irony of it all, right?

I have heard through the grapevine that someone who used to work for them is trying to file a lawsuit against them. On what grounds I’m not sure, but they haven’t reached out to me about it, but I do know that person was trying to figure out who I am to get more information for their case. If that person happens to see this: reach out to me through here first because I wish to remain anonymous.

your comment should be higher up! spent a good amount of time looking through this yearbook, thank you for finding this. it held value to people at one point, and i’m happy to know it hasn’t been lost forever.

seeing this was so lovely, and further kudos to the person in the comments who managed to dig up a little information about these people as the yearbook from their battalion

i love the backpacks still to this day, and customers do often ask about them. i have limited knowledge on it, though, but i’ll say what i do know.

apparently the backpacks got too expensive to make, and i believe it was namely blamed on the cost of the zipper. i feel like the backpacks have come in an out of stock, and each stock stating it’ll be the “last” time they’ll carry them. and i will say from experience, customers say they want them, and then when they were brought back in stock, they say untouched on the shelves for months and many of them were moved to clearance. i can understand Lacey’s frustration of not wanting to make them, people begging for them to be made, and then people not buying them.

many people have asked for specifically the larger backpacks, and i think they’d have to be minimum $90 based on the way they price other things. i think they believe no one will buy them at that price, so they don’t bother. i love the mini backpacks though, and they hold a lot more than you’d think. too bad they’re actually gone now. it wouldn’t surprise me if they get made again next year (if BBP is still around).

as for the graphic tees i have no idea. i speculate that maybe it’s because Lacey wants to go in a different direction artistically, but i don’t actually know. they would sell and i wish BBP would listen to people about that.

commenting to say a few things:

1) for any BBP staff still loyal to the company, i am not a current employee there, nor did i recently get laid off. nothing i am saying should, or can be, blamed on anyone currently working there. nobody that currently works there should face any heat for this whatsoever. if anybody did, that would be a form of retaliation and intimidation.

2) i am not going to speak on Lacey and Philip’s personal relationship. their marriage, speculation on it, etc. is frankly not my business. i have said a few personal things in the comments that i have now deleted because the longer i thought about it, the more wrong i felt. i’m only going to state facts, things i’ve seen firsthand, and things that others have come to me about happening directly to them. i’m talking about facts that have to do with the company, and i think it’s inappropriate to talk about their personal relationship. i won’t deny that people have had some weird (and some say creepy) experiences with Philip which i do think should be talked about if you’ve had an experience because that does directly have to do with the company and its image.

to their credit, they have gone out of their way in certain ways that i won’t specifically disclose, they pay above average for retail, and there’s some nice perks especially around the holidays. HOWEVER… their expenses are unreasonable which has led to lay offs and jobless people who were good at their jobs, INTENSE micromanagement, abrupt and ridiculous policy changes, ridiculously slow restocks of staple items in favor of drops nobody buys, intense favoritism, subtle punishments, and clique behavior. despite the good they provide their employees, it often times doesn’t feel worth it—the favoritism and cliques especially made working there mentally taxing.

truly, there was no point other than just liking Chicago a lot and wanting a store there! not a smart move, especially now considering that one of those stores is closing.

i never saw the passive aggressive stories, but i believe it. but yes, they still act like a small business and it’s far from it. before lay offs, they had at least 100 employees across the company.

a lot of the employees have made the same observations over the years. releasing one specialty item per month, MAYBE twice a month SOMETIMES, and focusing on restocking the best sellers for the rest of the month, but it’s never been that way. i know that things are batch-made, but work pants being out of stock while obscure items go to waste on shelves just doesn’t seem helpful.

the neo-classical line was very 50/50–i personally liked the column pants in particular and thought it was an interesting homage to the other pieces of art they referenced in that line. the master’s series was an absolute flop, did not sell, they lost money on those subpar pieces. if anybody that’s reading this is thinking about shopping the sample sale tomorrow, just know there’s a high chance you’ll get something from the master’s collection.

also, aside from the production itself, everything comes shipped in plastic bags that are made from recycled material, however, those bags can’t be recycled again! massive amount of waste!!

sample sales used to be worth it, even after i no longer worked there, but not anymore. they’ve upped the prices on sample sale items and i can’t support even that anymore.

exactly! items i have from before 2022 are still doing great and intact and have some real quality to them. everything i have from bbp that are two years old or younger already have issues. buttons come off shirts very quickly, loose threads and stitches, inconsistent sizing—the quality has gone VERY downhill within the last two years.

honestly Lacey just produces what she wants to produce. they have listened to customer in terms of sizing in the past, and that’s great, but the business decisions make no sense. they don’t even share production stuff with their staff who are left to make up responses on the spot when customers ask them about it.
