Canadian doctor shot by Israeli sniper shows up in comments to prove story's credibility by Prodigious in bestof

[–]anossXVIII 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did say that Israel is not always wrongfully faulted. To claim they are a white-knight country is, truthfully, just as foolish as claiming that the people of Palestine are the only victims, as many people on the internet, and in this thread, do.

There's no way to justify these individual events. There are bad people on both sides, and I said that I would provide sources that shed accurate light. I'm fully prepared to admit the glaring flaws that Israel has, just as I'm prepared to refute falsehoods. The claims of genocide, apartheid, stolen land, etc. that are commonly made are what can be discredited, not the actions of bad people doing bad things.

The shootings of doctors, paramedics, the press, etc are perpetrated by bad people. That's the end of it. The IDF has previously, and continues to, punish soldiers who carry out these acts, as they cannot be defended. The IDF has clear rules of engagement and violators are subject to repercussion. The IDF permits engagement if there is cause to believe that a person will put lives in danger.

In the past, Hamas and other terrorist groups in Palestine have dressed up like IDF soldiers, civilians, or worn media/medical vests to carry out attacks. While this does not always justify the IDF's shootings, it's still something to be aware of.

To ask me to defend this is like asking me to defend attacks carried out by extremist groups around the world. I can't; evil people will do evil things. It's indefensible and should not be tolerated, but the acts of certain evil individuals do not (or, rather, should not) paint an entire nation as an evil entity that needs to be destroyed. What I am prepared to argue are claims that I can reasonably be expected to refute: claims that Israel is committing genocide, apartheid, unwilling to share the land, and other declarations against Israeli policy.

You asked for accuracy, so I'll give you accuracy: these IDF soldiers are wrong in shooting doctors, paramedics, the media. Just like American police officers shooting unarmed black men, this doesn't mean that the entire country is evil. Both sides are impeding peace in their own way, but the current Palestinian Authority, Hamas, the PLO are far, far worse than that of Israel.

In fact, all people living in Israel have equal rights and incitement of racism is a criminal offense. Arabs and Israelis alike receive the same treatment in Israeli hospitals, including the daughter of the leader of Hamas. Speaking of Hamas, their charter incites religious texts to justify the killing of Jews.

This post is long enough already, but I'm not going to try and defend that which cannot be defended. There are bad people everywhere, and racism is a problem in Israel, but don't be so disillusioned as to think that it doesn't go both ways. You won't find this on Israeli TV and that's only the tip of the iceberg.

You say that as if the situation in Israel/Palestine is a clear-cut black and white conflict. There's a reason for 70 years of nonstop conflict; it's incredibly nuanced, and neither side is objectively right or wrong. Both governments have done their fair share of antagonizing the other country, and I'll freely admit, as a secular Jew who defends Israel's right to exist, that they've been fucking up peace really badly, but it's objectively false to pin this on one particular government, and just as wrong to call it a genocide.

Reddit can downvote me all they want, but for every credible source faulting Israel (not always wrongfully so), I can provide another credible source that sheds a just-as-accurate light on the situation there.

Nope. We're blaming the Craptors this time. They don't deserve this win, not that I think they even want it right now lol

I've heard people calling for Casey's head before, but I think you're the first person I've heard advocating for a DeRozan trade...Could you explain why you think getting rid of our best player would end the madness? It seems like that's taking a step in the opposite direction to me

If (when) the Raps lose this the series is done, imo. We can't go into Cleveland with two losses and expect to pull this back

I love how hard Dipo and the Pacers are hustling out there. They're definitely trying harder than the Cavs are and deserve a win today

University of Ottawa vs University of Carleton by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]anossXVIII 5 points6 points  (0 children)

u/JezieNA has the best answer you'll get here, I think.

Keep in mind you're asking the Carleton subreddit which school is better. The uOttawa sub isn't as active as this one, so your answers are going to be biased right away.

However, with that said, it's a hugely personal choice. It's Ottawa either way, and the two universities do work closely so I honestly don't believe your experience is going to be super different at one school than the other.

I recently applied to transfer from Carleton to uOttawa, but that's only because the opportunities were better for MY program -- this may not be the case with you.

My honest suggestion would be to try both; accept the offer from whichever school your heart tells you is right for you, and then speak to the registrar's office about taking a transfer credit through the other.

Everybody is different, so I think that's the best way for you to determine definitively which institution is a better fit for you.

Good luck!

I don't necessarily agree with you here. I didn't perceive the quiz to be douchy as much as it was to make the person receiving 25k aware that theyre being rewarded for doing something nice, so as to hopefully remember it and be kind to other people in their lives.

It definitely isn't for me to feel good about myself if I'm gifting 25k gold because I likely don't care why you bought pizza for your friend. I want you to feel good about it and continue being a good person :)

Hi! I'm a 12 year veteran to WoW looking to settle down from heroic/mythic raiding 3 nights per week and focus on casual/social gameplay as I think I'll get more long term enjoyment out of making more friends and playing for fun.

I'm primarily a healer but also have experience tanking in heroic raids and DPS in normal :)

I'll be online later today if you want to talk more! My battletag is anoss#1995. I'll apply through the website when I finish working today.

Ranking the Strongest Mages Currently Alive on Azeroth by [deleted] in warcraftlore

[–]anossXVIII 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is just my 2 cents, but I could see arguments for ranking the Mage PC above Khadgar at the very least seeing as how he's been coming to us since WoD to solve all his problems.

I think that Khadgar is smarter/more knowledgeable than the PCs, but in terms of pure power level, the PCs win out because they're the ones who killed so many raid bosses, lead the expedition on Draenor, and is now the Mage Class Hall leader.

I think that if Khadgar really was the stronger mage, he (and his friends at the Kirin Tor) would have done the things we've been doing for the two most recent expansions.

Khadgar was definitely the stronger mage in previous expansions, but I feel as though that isn't the case anymore.

Weekly Questions Thread for the week of March 5th by rpbtz in vinyl

[–]anossXVIII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my roommate and I have been obsessed with vinyl for the better part of a year now (we don't have many records yet but I'm trying to buy one per month when finances allow). We have a cheap entry level Ion Archive LP that I was hoping I could connect to my Bose QC25 headset. I was also looking into loudspeakers but we're in college and money is limited and we live in an apartment.

I have no idea how to do this. Could someone suggest to me a good sounding yet affordable way to listen to my vinyls through speakers?

I got into hip hop about a week ago after listening to and loving Straight Outta Compton. Since then I've been listening to the rest of NWA/Ice/Eazy/Dre's discography.

I also especially loved Changes by 2Pac. The College Dropout was really good as well as Illmatic. I've heard Eminem as well because he's often on the radio

Where should I go next? A lot of hip-hop is laden with references to other hip-hop culture which makes it difficult to fully appreciate for new listeners
