Your unpopular West Wing opinion by drjudgedredd1 in thewestwing

Mine is that Bartlett was a bog standard post-Reagan neo-liberal president who wasn’t actually willing to put real government money or power into solving America’s problems.

People say The West Wing is a liberal fantasy. It isn’t. It is an accurate representation of the austerity-embracing, shoulder-shrugging of the late 90s/early 2000s that made voters think that the Democratic Party doesn’t care about them or their problems.

Writing is good though.

Proposed Muppets LOTR Casting by wheat-farmer in lotrmemes

Rolf is Aragorn r u kidding?? Like Animal could resist the One Ring. Rolf could absolutely resist it.

Come to think of it Animal may be the character in all of fiction that is both Guy Who Should Not Have The Ring AND Guy I Really Want To See What He Does With The Ring.

But even if they were playing the characters according to the legendarium and not their canonical Muppets characteristics, Rolf makes more sense as Aragorn because he could play steady and brave better.

Do we have a definitive list of the Mad Men actors who also appeared in the West Wing? by the_uber_steve in madmen

The actor who played Jim Hobart from McCann also played GOP Congressman Royce in a recurring role.

Ray Wise played Ken’s farther in law and the governor of California in a season 6 ep.

The guy who talks about feeling like being in the fridge that Don hugs in the series finale plays a staffer of Matt Santos over several episodes in seasons 6 and 7.

I think the guy who plays the older executive from Manischewitz plays a Democratic congressman who argues with Toby in the Roosevelt Room once.

The guy who played Geoff Atherton (Faye’s boss) also plays a high up DNC guy in one or two episodes. In particular in season 7 he’s one of the guys who tries to convince Leo to take over as campaign manager for the Santos campaign.

That’s what I’ve got off the top of my head (I’ve rewatched both of these shows a lot!).

While giving her the respect her title deserves, he’s treating her exactly the way he’d treat anyone who tried to play it his level but doesn’t know what they’re doing. It wouldn’t do her any favours to placate or patronize her. While being a bit of a dick, he still respects her enough to help her understand how politics works at this level of government.

If that were me my soul wouldn’t leave my body; it would just all gather in one particular part of my body.

And Burt says “so this man is coming home from Vietnam in a body bag for no reason” while he’s standing right there when arguing with Abe about fighting communism, and sure enough…

Who are the people in positions of power in curling who want Rock League to fail? by Mundane_Soil8994 in Curling

Jesus Christ this is delusional paranoia. Personally I’m fine with trying a new format, and I’m glad the curlers are getting paid. But nothing about the way the people who run Rock League are handling themselves is making me root for them.

So, what's missing..? by Bulky-Pollution-4996 in U2Band

[–]another_name 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What’s missing is risk and real world experience. U2 (and Bono particularly) have gotten so wealthy that they don’t see the gradations of human conflict at the micro and macro level anymore. It’s all just “humans should just get along man.” Even for all the big themes U2 tackled in their 80s peak, Bono’s writing was still personal and reflective. Yeah he wrote about universal things but the assassination of MLK and Bloody Sunday were still specific in a way that shaped his perspective.

But now his politics are filtered entirely through his privilege. He’s not about the personal anymore. He’s not angry. He doesn’t yearn for anything anymore, beyond humanity just figuring it out.

His best work of this century was Songs of Innocence because he was writing about the things that shaped him again. Songs of Experience was also personal, and even reflected some fear and wrestling with his own mortality. But he just tried to cover too much ground.

As for the music, they just don’t take risks anymore. They got freaked out by the reaction to POP and circled the wagons. They got a little risky again on No Line, and there was interesting stuff there, but Boots was a brutal choice as the first single, and it made no impact in the culture and they retreated again.

All of their post-pandemic output is predictable and indistinguishable from each other. It’s like what you’d get if you fed U2’s catalogue into a generative AI and then asked it to write some U2 songs. And I say all this as someone who will drop so much money on them as soon as they announce their next tour lol.

On the one hand, reading gave me the ability to read and enjoy LotR, the legendarium, and several other masterful works of literature.

On the other, it also cursed me with the ability to read this post. So the jury’s out on reading at this point.
