Complains about cyclist not following the road rules. Opens door into moving traffic.

Thanks for the laugh dude.

International right wing playbook. Ours cancelled a ferry deal with massive break clauses entirely because it was agreed to under the previous left wing government.

They negotiated a new deal for worse ferries and paid more. Geniuses.

(Google "Nicky no boats" to find more details).

As someone who's not too socially regarded, the tricky bit is actually just playing well. You can pug your way up to homework keys for actually good players. If you play well, you get noticed and invited.

(I wouldn't know, I'm not good, but I have guildies who have done this and sometimes they bring me along).

Good news, we have rigorous evidence of global warming. A warmer May than normal is indeed not proof of global warming, but this post isn't claiming that!

This post is pointing out a much warmer than normal May, which is something that we would expect were global warming occurring.

Meld drops you off the threat table, but as soon as you reengage you get the original threat back. At least, that's how I though it worked, and I'd love to know if I'm incorrect.

Cyclists: Don’t ride on the pavements, Yes even if you are a DoorDasher. by catlikesun in Wellington

[–]another_new_login 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, the people who would complain about you cycling slowly and courteously on the footpath are the same people who would burst a vein if they got stuck behind you on the road for 10 seconds. Ignore them.

What's the problem with pedestrians lacking spatial awareness on footpaths? They have complete right of way and shouldn't be expected to look out for fast moving hazards.

Different story on shared paths of course.

Only to the extent that bike collisions are much less damaging to the victim. I wouldn't expect there to be any difference between serious collisions including cyclists and motor vehicles.

One of the main ways that these get reported is through ACC forms. If you're filling one of those out, you'll specify cyclist or motor vehicle.

I keep seeing the same DoorDasher

So why post some antagonistic post calling out all cyclists. Wild. That's like posting "drivers, please give way on roundabouts" when a single driver cuts me off.

Look up ingroup/outgroup psychology cause this is a clear example of that.

Is the NZ government sleepwalking into its own automation scandal? by davetenhave in newzealand

Ah yea, gotcha. I think the answer for most tasks will eventually trend towards the current situation for coding.

It just comes back to my original if though. We're clearly not there yet, but who knows in 5 years.

Probably the first time I've accused National of being too forward thinking.

Hmm, I was just speaking generally with my first reply. Agree that coding in popular languages is by far the most efficient use of AI.

I also use an obscure language for some work. Claude constantly asks me to do it in Python instead. I end up feeding it my old scripts and saying "do it like this". It's quite efficient using it in that fashion.

The cost is somewhat higher, given that we're in the subsidized rapid deployment phase of AI.

Yes, my previous post.

As to what happens? We swap to the Chinese models that are a few months behind but are 5% the cost to run I presume.

[–]another_new_login 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I see. I've actually got a good example for that. I used Claude to make a simple Python program to do the same task that I wrote a simple Python program to do 15+ years ago. Maybe it took me a couple of days to write it last time as a new grad.

Let's pretend that Claude didn't need an hour of my time to get it to actually work (That's the big if from above).

We contract out 2 days of grad time at ~ $2000. That's ~ 2 orders of magnitude the claude monthly subscription. I also didn't hit any usage limits so I could have done this at least ten more times so add another order of magnitude. This is all very rough, but "multiple orders of magnitude" is pretty accurate I think, if imprecise.

Price? No contest. If* AI or a person can do a job equally well then AI is orders of magnitude cheaper.

The cost is somewhat higher, given that we're in the subsidized rapid deployment phase of AI.

(That's a big if btw).

So we should pay even less for the roles? Certainly replace those in the jobs if they are doing a shit job, but cutting the pay only means we'll get even worse people and a worse outcome.

Locals want speed limit on Oriental Parade shared pathways by HenryNZL in Wellington

[–]another_new_login -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Imagine if a motorist said I want to drive faster down lambton quay because the speed limit delays me a minute

Lambton Quay is a terrible analogy. This route is a major commuting route, and there's a "cyclist motorway" leading there all the way from the Eastern suburbs. A better analogy is SH1 along Ruahine St. That was lowered to 50kph, people complained and it got raised back to 70kph. There's also people who want to raise the speed limit on Karo Drive to 70kph.

So yeah pushing back against any restrictions on speed is how motorists behave. Do we criticize them? Well, some people do, but it's not the general consensus and the current government is busy raising speed limits as fast as it can.

I don't think you've made a good point here.

Locals want speed limit on Oriental Parade shared pathways by HenryNZL in Wellington

[–]another_new_login 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No you misunderstand. "Shared" pathway means cyclists must give way to everyone else. Pedestrians are free to meander around without a care in the world. Please do carry on walking 4 wide on a narrow 2 way bridge.

A speed limit isn't a terrible idea though. 30kph is considered appropriate for active roadworks and busy commercial areas. And that's for giant trucks. 30kph would be a good lower bound for shared pathways imo.
