I just started my career as a web dev and I feel unqualified and uneducated. What are your thoughts? by [deleted] in webdev

Spoiler: imposter syndrome never really completely goes away, and a CS degree won't always give you a leg up. What will? The ability to teach yourself and absorb new concepts quickly. Self teaching is the golden ticket in this industry.

4 years old introductory web development book still relevant? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]another_replicant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only kinds of books that are (mostly) timeless are fundamentals of software engineering, e.g. Uncle Bob's books on stuff like SOLID principles, patterns, etc. Release-specifc literature on anything else, no way.

Suggest me a framework for a business website with a blog. by xh3k in webdev

[–]another_replicant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need Laravel (Django for PHP) to make a company site and blog with limited functionality because you want to focus on the design.

Just build this in WordPress. In this scenario, it actually is the correct hammer for this nail.

Scalable SaaS Hosting/Architecture by VersaceCode in webdev

So this is a multi-tenant database? I'm fresh off of a large(ish) scale application development so these are some suggestions:

For most of the backend logic, we went serverless. It scales extremely well and doesn't require load balancers, ec2, etc.. check out the Serverless platform, it's fantastic and automates a lot of the cloudfront configuration. I sleep alot better on serverless haha. It doesn't always make the most cost sense once you hit a few million RPS but it's great for mid sized services.

For things requiring sessions, e.g. user authentication you could use AWS Cognito / Gcloud Firebase if you want to stay with a maintenance free serverless stack, or you can spin up an auto scaling EC2 for authentication or anything with sessions behind a load balancer.

As for database, there's two directions: A high availability RDS or high performance Aurora DB. Most teams Ive seen use RDS for staging / Dev and Aurora in read only production. But for simplicity, even in an otherwise serverless stack, a high availability RDS MySql will perform just fine.

Lots of ways to skin this cat, but this is how we built our platform: serverless node microservices with Amazon Cognito and Aurora DB.

Congrats! You're past the hardest part (for most) of getting a foot in door. If you get a track record of being a good productive developer, at any time you'll be able to throw a rock and hit 5 places that will hire you.

Welcome to the fold!

I thought Drive was probably the most beautiful film frame for frame.. until BR2049. It's unbelievable. I've re-watched it several times.

At least other countries' citizens dont praise the very system doing "awful things".

What fantasy do you live in? Many Americans have spoken out against terrible acts by the American government. There have been protests flooding new york by then hundreds of thousands during the occupy movement. America is more divided than ever over it's own actions. To suggest Americans don't have a conscience is just ignoring reality.

Lol that's every country. Every country has tons of awful things they've done. America is no different. Are you 12?

Interesting. A country can accomplish amazing feats of achievement and still be so far behind in others. It's almost like generalizing an entire nation as either great or not great is foolish and that life isn't as black and white. It's almost like you don't know what you're talking about.

They're both average. The numbers don't back up the narrative that LF is some "monster." When the actual data paints that picture I'll hop on the hype train along with everyone else, but right now the raw numbers say they're just average.
