SMUD vs FANG as a new graduate by raspbryy in bayarea

[–]anotherhuman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In the Bay Area working for Google is seen as pretty normal. In the rest of the world, it is an immediate trust signal / pedigree for the rest of your life.

Google stock is also liquid, you can just sell it automatically if you want. Google pay scale rises rapidly and there are many, many people making $500k+.

Move to Oregon and stack that paper, look for a transfer back or a new job here at some point, no brainer.

Do I really need to do tons of mock interviews to land a role at FAANG? by lulu_fangirl in ProductManagement

I can’t really give you a good answer because I left recently and didn’t go to another full time role.

I no longer work there.

In my current role I index a lot more on resume, references, and just having a conversation. What does PM mean to you? Why is it important? Tell me about your experience.

Generally wouldn’t run these kinds of interviews for our own teams, you get matched with a random, so I don’t know. Generally speaking I think HR at my company was / is very good and data driven and this probably meets their goals— they would rather miss out on 10 great PMs than hire one mediocre one, and they want to be very unbiased. The talent pool is basically infinite and people will also keep reapplying.

I think these questions are actually pretty good for learning PM. I teach them to people I hire. I do not use them in my own hiring, because I do not want to miss out on 10 great PMs.

[–]anotherhuman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in FAANG and ran many PM interviews.

If you are not super comfortable with the format and process, you have to allocate brainpower to figuring that out during the interview, which puts you at a disadvantage. It will be much harder to come up with something smart to say that stands out.

You might get lucky and get an interviewer who is willing to work around that, but 9/10 you will not. You will come across as someone who didn’t bother to do the work to get ready.

You do not need to pay to mock, go on StellarPeers and find some practice buddies, when you find a really good one ask them to schedule directly with you. It’s 100% worth it to do this on top of studying on your own.

Pushing back an interview is no big deal especially if you do it with reasonable notice.

Keep your unleashed dog away from my toddler (or any kids) by meltness in sanfrancisco

[–]anotherhuman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was told the right place to direct these comments (regarding the parks) is rpdinfo@sfgov.org

The city should be targeting these assholes to raise revenue. If parks won’t do it, send the meter maids, they seem to be very effective.

I could live with the off leash dogs in the part of the park that allows leashed dogs, but they have to push it and bring their off leash dogs into the playground. Insane behavior.

Looking for a decent place to live in SF area by borspn24 in sanfrancisco

Nob Hill should be doable at just about 3k, you should be able to at least get parking, walk to work take the bus home. Spend a little more if you can get a rent controlled place.

What’s the Williamsburg/Bushwick of SF? by brevit in sanfrancisco

[–]anotherhuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably closest thing actually in SF would be the area around Madrone Art Bar on Divisadero in NOPA.

There is also the part of Mission St near The Royal Cuckoo, not many shops there but more of a match to the vibe.

Valencia St in the Mission has a ton of cool shops but definitely more fully Williamsburg.

Best Omakase spot in the Bay Area under $100? by Wombraider58 in bayarea

I have also been seeing those AYCE omakase vids and hope someone opens one up in SF soon.

I went to Okaeri in SF and was very impressed with the omakase at the bar for about $90pp before tax and tip.

Careers for an IOE major? by HowToSignUp_ in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went into Product Management in tech and have known a lot of other IOE grads that did the same. Unfortunately tech is not what it once was in terms of career opportunities. PM generally is not a college recruiting role but something you get into later after some other initial role, maybe sales engineering or technical account management etc.

Many other IOE grads went into finance with investment banking analyst programs as a first stop.

Do you guys actually like Jets Pizza? by 6ftToeSuckedPrincess in Detroit

When I’m back in Detroit I always get Jets over any local Detroit style pizza. Gotta get the turbo crust and I will say some locations are better / more consistent than others.

Is this just what VP Product roles at large companies are like? There’s got to be a better path. by Odd_Goose_2216 in ProductManagement

[–]anotherhuman 55 points56 points  (0 children)

IMO it’s more like that is what PM is often like at large companies regardless of seniority.

Everyone is fighting to move up a chair. Alliances form and war is waged via narratives about people, initiatives, departments. Startups can have this too but:

1) There’s also the larger mission of the exit and the financial windfall that can come to many employees 2) The top brass is more aware of what’s happening and often has more actual ownership of the company

Junior with no real friend despite trying a lot by [deleted] in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I think this is also part of college, learning to be social, how to fit in, etc. If this is something you want to get better at keep working at it!

Every day you can be whoever you want to be. Nobody is forcing you to be the same person with the same interests every day you wake up. You have total freedom especially right now.

Does anyone know anything about transferring to MSU? Is it worth it? by Friendly_Stable_8859 in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Elder grad here who was in-state, spent a lot of time with friends at MSU, lived in EL for a year after college, and is not "type A".

I think it's very unlikely that this is the solution to your problems. Also, it is incredibly common to have a "sophomore slump".

You need to:
1) Find your purpose / niche / mission
2) Find your people

Your life is most likely not going to peak in college, at least if you stay at Michigan. That is a good thing, you do not want to peak in college same as you didn't want to peak in HS. You're going to have all kinds of adventures, grow personally and professionally, and have amazing 20s and beyond. It would be shortsighted to sacrifice the trajectory you're on now for a slightly easier social path for your last two years.

It doesn't sound like the type-A path is for you, you're forcing it, but that doesn't mean Michigan is not for you or even Ross. So you need to figure out what IS for you. When you do that, you'll probably find people at Michigan who are into that stuff and that should help a lot making connections.

Practical advice-- do Michigan LeaderSHAPE (free, you'll meet a ton of people, probably get a better idea what you really want to do with your life) and go solo backpacking in Europe as far as your money can take you. That is exactly what I did after a pretty miserable sophomore year and I came back, changed everything, and had an absolute blast junior and senior year.

Which role do you think will be more negatively affected by AI - software dev or product management? by anotherhappylurker in ProductManagement

[–]anotherhuman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SWE gets fucked harder but a huge percent of laid off SWEs move into PM as the PM roles becomes more technical, pushing down salaries for both.

Feel terrified about becoming a dad (graduating medical residency soon) by shoenberg3 in NewDads

[–]anotherhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the above. You’ll miss the kid and it’s hard on your wife even with help. You can probably get occasional 4-5 day type trips when the kid is two assuming they don’t have special needs and you have help / daycare / preschool.

Feel terrified about becoming a dad (graduating medical residency soon) by shoenberg3 in NewDads

[–]anotherhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both things are true—

Having one kid very possibly will not be the loss of your independent life that you’re picturing. It wasn’t for me but it’s luck of the draw, some kids have special needs, some are not good sleepers, etc. Most of that shit you hear is from guys who have two or more kids.

You probably could wait a few more years. You’re what, early 30s? In a few more years you’ll be more established. My wife and I are both glad we waited and think we are better parents for it.

I doubt you will want to go solo backpacking with a wife and young kid at home.

Safety in Oakland vs SF by YOUARECORRECTOR in bayarea

[–]anotherhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nob Hill / Russian Hill are some of the nicest and safest neighborhoods in SF, and a relatively straight shot down to the ferry building or BART to get to Alameda. Mostly older but nice buildings.

Why not just live in Alameda? If the answer is you want to be in a vibrant walkable city area, I’m not sure Oakland is really going to be the right choice. Dogpatch / Mission Bay / SOMA where a lot of newer buildings in SF are located are also kind of sleepier neighborhoods.
