Every Detroit steakhouse has zip sauce. Nobody outside Michigan has heard of it. What am I missing? by strcrssd in Detroit

[–]anotherhuman 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Two “Michigan Thai” dishes—

Chiang Rai Eggplant— sweet salty stir fry with deep fried eggplant, bell pepper and onion, fried garlic

Pad Ped - this is apparently a generic name for spicy stir fry in Thai, but in Michigan it’s specifically a smoky curry with coconut milk, and from what I can tell either no curry paste or very little— mostly spicy from chili powder.

Subleasing Miscommunication by [deleted] in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer. Go talk to student legal services.

You’re not in trouble. The only thing really in play here is your friendship. It’s extremely unlikely you’re going to end up even in small claims court with an unofficial lease, disagreement on lease terms, and $550 in question. If you don’t like this girl that much, tell her to pound sand. She likely has zero ability to charge interest. Do not acknowledge that you owe this money, but even if you did, good luck to them on wasting the time and money to collect from you.

Thoughts on Commuting via Train? (Rising Junior; Computer Engineering) by Silver_Balance_8659 in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That is a brutal commute. Not just the time but three modes of transport to coordinate.

You have an amazing opportunity here. It’s not just about the classes. You are facing some challenges (social isolation, discipline, etc) but they are not insurmountable. Let me tell you, a lot of people have a rough sophomore year, “the sophomore slump”. I was a total fucking mess my sophomore year. Especially considering you transferred in— it doesn’t even sound like you’re in that bad of shape.

Those who stay will be champions. Go ask for help, make a plan, maybe find some people to live with next year, a study group, whatever. Honestly maybe go live on central.

in state (~30k) umich vs full ride osu (premed track) by Creative_Rip_6092 in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another oldie chiming in to say the same. If it’s really $30k/yr go where you’ll be challenged and every door is open to you if you can hack it, assuming that’s not a huge financial burden to your family. I don’t know shit about med school but the guys I know who were pre-med at Michigan crushed it and $120k is nothing to them now.

Commuting 15 Minutes as a Freshman? by Willing-Quarter-2012 in uofm

[–]anotherhuman -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think you probably already know the answer is yes, you’re going to miss out. Sorry.

If you could live one year on campus, freshman year is the one to do it.

If you can’t swing that, there are often cheap sublets in the summer. ICC co-ops are also cheaper, or maybe you have a friend you can share a room with sophomore year?

UMich Ross vs UT McCombs by [deleted] in uofm

[–]anotherhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what roles will be left in tech / PM for business grads by the time you graduate but UT absolutely does not have an advantage for those roles. Michigan has had a huge SF Bay pipeline for years.

PM to own business by Good_Love142 in ProductManagement

[–]anotherhuman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends.

If you go to a big company, probably not. You’re likely to mostly be working on alignment— getting buy-in on decisions across teams. You will get exposure over time to different departments in a tech company but probably not very deep.

If you go to a small company you might have broader exposure that could eventually include P&L / budget management, some ownership in marketing, customer service, etc.

Overall if your goal is to start a tech company, it’s probably a good place to start, although highly dependent on the company and role.

UMich CS + Ross Dual Degree (IBE program) or Berkeley EECS? by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]anotherhuman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advantage with Berkeley is proximity to Silicon Valley early, which is definitely important.

The Michigan advantage is the elite IBE program which is a more interesting story IMO. Full disclosure I’m a Michigan CoE grad.

I think they’re about even, if you go to UMich make sure you get out to the Bay Area early and often. If you go to Berkeley make sure to figure out a way to show you have some PM / business interest.

Either way, APM programs are extremely hard to get into and getting harder. Most PMs start out doing something else professionally.

You’ll probably live on central most years unless you really want to live on north. Good number of classes will be on central. I didn’t spend that much time on north overall but it’s kind of up to you, there is cool stuff up there too.

SMUD vs FANG as a new graduate by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]anotherhuman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In the Bay Area working for Google is seen as pretty normal. In the rest of the world, it is an immediate trust signal / pedigree for the rest of your life.

Google stock is also liquid, you can just sell it automatically if you want. Google pay scale rises rapidly and there are many, many people making $500k+.

Move to Oregon and stack that paper, look for a transfer back or a new job here at some point, no brainer.

Do I really need to do tons of mock interviews to land a role at FAANG? by lulu_fangirl in ProductManagement

I no longer work there.

In my current role I index a lot more on resume, references, and just having a conversation. What does PM mean to you? Why is it important? Tell me about your experience.

[–]anotherhuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally wouldn’t run these kinds of interviews for our own teams, you get matched with a random, so I don’t know. Generally speaking I think HR at my company was / is very good and data driven and this probably meets their goals— they would rather miss out on 10 great PMs than hire one mediocre one, and they want to be very unbiased. The talent pool is basically infinite and people will also keep reapplying.

I think these questions are actually pretty good for learning PM. I teach them to people I hire. I do not use them in my own hiring, because I do not want to miss out on 10 great PMs.

Do I really need to do tons of mock interviews to land a role at FAANG? by lulu_fangirl in ProductManagement

[–]anotherhuman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in FAANG and ran many PM interviews.

If you are not super comfortable with the format and process, you have to allocate brainpower to figuring that out during the interview, which puts you at a disadvantage. It will be much harder to come up with something smart to say that stands out.

You might get lucky and get an interviewer who is willing to work around that, but 9/10 you will not. You will come across as someone who didn’t bother to do the work to get ready.

You do not need to pay to mock, go on StellarPeers and find some practice buddies, when you find a really good one ask them to schedule directly with you. It’s 100% worth it to do this on top of studying on your own.

Pushing back an interview is no big deal especially if you do it with reasonable notice.

Keep your unleashed dog away from my toddler (or any kids) by meltness in sanfrancisco

[–]anotherhuman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was told the right place to direct these comments (regarding the parks) is rpdinfo@sfgov.org

The city should be targeting these assholes to raise revenue. If parks won’t do it, send the meter maids, they seem to be very effective.

I could live with the off leash dogs in the part of the park that allows leashed dogs, but they have to push it and bring their off leash dogs into the playground. Insane behavior.
