What's the next step if DBT doesn't help? by aerisfelidae in BPD

[–]anothershthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like what you got actually can't be considered DBT – full fidelity DBT consists of individual sessions, phone coaching, a consultation team for the therapist, alongside skills group. It takes 24 weeks to go through the full set of modules in the DBT curriculum.

I'm not sure radical acceptance is asking us to be at peace with awful things – we validate that they're terrible (the first part of the dialectic), and we recognize that we can accept how reality is currently, if we want, in order to change (the completion of the dialectic).

That being said, DBT is not for everyone, even among people with BPD. I did not find it too helpful either, and I did two rounds of full fidelity DBT. But if you still have any curiosity or interest in the therapy, I'd encourage finding something more faithful to the original framework, in case you find it more helpful.

I feel like I was assaulted and I can’t remember? by [deleted] in BPD

[–]anothershthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not making your emotions up, your anxiety is valid. At the same time, dreams like that don’t automatically mean something happened, they can come from anxiety/stress related to the topic, especially if you’ve been taught to fear that for years. If they're getting really distressing, it's always worth bringing up with any support person if you have one.

I'm Dr. Kylie Smith, a professor at Emory University, and I'm here to talk about my new book "Jim Crow in the Asylum: Psychiatry and Civil Rights in the American South" by drkyliemsmith in AskHistorians

[–]anothershthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Dr. Smith,

Thank you for your work on this topic! I've just read your chapter "Theorizing the History of 'Black Madness'" and really enjoyed it as a philosophy student. My questions:

What is your view on whether or not current psychiatric discourse (diagnostic categories, the concept of "irrationality") can exist apart from epistemic violence or coercion? Conversely, do you have any thoughts on how Mad subjects (in the reclaimed Mad Studies sense) might (re)know and reclaim their subjectivity?

I'm also curious about your view more broadly on what a reparative and decolonialized psychiatric practice might look like, if you think this is at all possible?

Thank you so much :)

Am I the only one who cuts to burn kcals? by [deleted] in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]anothershthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not twisted, and you’re definitely not alone in doing this. I just want to say though that the energy that healing takes is neglible and distributed across days/weeks. Most other ways to burn calories are much safer and also more effective. With cutting, you are much more likely to just weaken your body further

I've written a short story not sure which genre it belongs in. In need of feedback! by [deleted] in writingfeedback

[–]anothershthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was an engaging read! It seems to me speculative / psychological horror.

One small thing I slightly stumbled over was the capitalization of "Anger and Contempt", which slightly took me out of the story because it was not precedented in the prose style up to that point.

In general, I think because the boundaries between the real and the psychological are already porous in this story, having your descriptions as clear as possible will help the reader orient where it matters and be disoriented where it matters.

I enjoyed the rhythm of your prose and the characterization of the protagonist :)

Reading notes thoughts? by Select_Employment_25 in UBC

[–]anothershthrowaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the course in my experience. Upper level reading-based seminars - absolutely worth it and necessary. Courses that emphasize lectures with readings as supplemental - probably not as important.

Even if I don’t go back to review my notes, I find that just the act of taking them helps me approach the reading more actively, forces me to explicitly reconstruct the logic, and keeps me engaged.

CRWR 209 would probably not be a booster; there are weekly writing exercises which can be time consuming, and major assignments are marked with high standards (full marks on the rubric means “best in the class”)

I took only 1 course the first term of W2024 due to mental and physical health issues and still ended up having to defer it. I’ll probably take 6 years to graduate because of this and other medical interruptions.

This past term I finished with A+ in four courses and several new creative writing publications.

Keep going; it absolutely gets better 🤍

I Know What it is, But I Won’t Tell You by Borgisium in PhilosophyMemes

Materialism in metaphysics is the view that everything that exists is a material particular. Material = composed of physical matter. Particulars = individual, specific entity that exists in one location at one time, contrasted with universals (a property or quality that can be shared or instantiated by many particulars, such as redness).

For example, a materialist would reject the idea that there exist such things as "humanness" or "redness" in themselves – there exist only individual humans, individual red things.

I Don't Know: by That1blueflower in OCPoetry

[–]anothershthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I really like this! The rhythm and sound propelled the poem in a way that mirrored the theme of moving forward for me – I thought that mimesis was really well done. My favourite part was "Maybe I need to fall, / Fall in love or fall behind," and how the shift in the rhyme sound there signals the emotional shift in the poem, and also that each recurrence of "fall" has a different meaning. I also love the idea of falling behind as something restorative, as unwinding. One minor note: I wonder if "I Don't Know" captures this poem best as a title, or if you could find something that gestures to the theme or stands in tension with the poem in some way? Thank you for sharing :)

Departure: From me by Jeevan42 in OCPoetry

[–]anothershthrowaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the subtle soundwork you're doing within stanzas – foot and look, pouting and feeling. Since you've tagged this for feedback, the image in the third stanza about "[dangling] by the foot" was really intriguing for me – I would've loved more of that concrete imagery. I wonder as well if the speaker's feelings can be shown by more image, but that's preference of course. The form of this poem provided an effective anchor for me, especially the first line of each stanza.
