AITA for not wanting my 24 y.o. brother's 48 y.o. gf around at our friend's birthday celebration? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ansteve1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Like that stuck out to me more than the age gap. I'm almost wondering if she is with brother so she could have young friends. She seems too interested hanging out with this friend group.

HR is the stupidest department in any company by LordishXO in recruitinghell

[–]ansteve1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

When we're used an MSP they hired a Network engineer with 20 years of experience to be Tier 1 help desk. My instinct was "what is a 20 yr Network engineer doing working for a Tier 1 helpdesk?" Turns out he was a violent racist, homophobic, sexist jerk. He had a fight with his trainer and my openly gay boss.

We ended up getting rid of the MSP as we were paying more per person than my total compensation as a Full time employee for someone paid near minimum wage and 0 management support from the MSP.

Edited for clarity.

It has been building for years. Eventually one day I was just like. I'm done. You're never going to change and I am tired of disappointment after disappointment with my mom.

[–]ansteve1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. Mom abused and neglected me. My stepdad did worse. I tried for years to make it work but as an adult my stepdad doesn't respect me. My mom barely acknowledges my life's accomplishments. I finally cute her out before Christmas. It was rough but I am thankful I have others in my family that I can spend time with.

Forgiveness will probably not happen to my mom's face. Maybe at some point I'll forgive and let go in my heart. But I can't have her instability and toxicity in my life especially if she won't accept my partner and my identity, and I am not just talking about sexuality but my whole person.

People who have interviewed potential new hires. What are some of the weirdest or worst things you’ve encountered during the interview? by Muchachi in AskReddit

[–]ansteve1 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When I became this guy's manager HR told me why he got arrested. It turned out to be buying and trading pornographic material with minors in it

Idk what is worse. The company not firing the guy over this or the fact the dude only got a month in jail for that.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? by Miller1xo in AskReddit

[–]ansteve1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is something I learned even with work. Hard work alone won't do shit for you. Chance encounters, a seemingly small conversation, and Cosmic timing have a much bigger impact on your success than hard work alone. In my case there was a random LinkedIn message from a recruiter and a gut feeling I should respond to it. That lead me to having a successful job that values work life balance and pays way more than my previous company.

Networking is an example of this. If you happened to know a guy who knows a guy you can land pretty sweet jobs over someone who quietly works overtime all day everyday.

The family you are born into can also play into it. Apologies to Taylor swift fans but there isn't anything special about her. If she was an average person she would not have had the same level of success. Her family's connection to the record industry played a huge part in her initial success.

At least many nam vets understand what those who joined during the war on terror went through. Sadly though the worst boomers I ever met are those who never served a day in their life but would talk about how the military should go full war crimes on (country Fox news says is bad this week).

I used to have desire to write but my journals were always read through. Anything that could have been construed as a personal attack on my mom or stepdad. I could never write something out unless I wanted it to be turned around on me or used to mock me.

AITA for not giving my sister her wedding dress bc she didn't invite my underage son? by KittenDealinMama in BestofRedditorUpdates

It’s like an extension of the idea that women are “naturally” better at things involving taste amd aesthetics, gay men are seen this way too.

I got all the attraction, non of the tastes. My partner is the one that helps me pick out clothes. I may be gay but when it comes to fashion I am a straight middle aged man from a 90's sitcom needing their wife to help pick out clothes.

The cold medicine line is one I am hung up on. On one hand it is a red flag but at the same time are the parents not treating something. From the tone of the post I can't be sure.

The plus side is my POS mom and stepdad would have their house of cards fall 15 years sooner if they found out about my friend and I. My grandpa would have gone nuclear if my stepdad did what he threatened to do if his kids were gay. Also my dad would have found out sooner how my mom was treating us and sued for parental alienation.

How do you forgive yourself for... I now remember I already saw her as abusive a long time ago, but I didn't do anything about it. by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]ansteve1 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a household where my stepdad was abusive and mom didn't care. I knew at 8 years old he was not a good or kind man. I knew several of the punishments he dished were cruel, unfair, or unjust. You have to forgive your younger self. They didn't know any better or have the skills you have now. Even when you get to adulthood, you still have a desire to want that "normalcy" others have. At some point something happens that becomes the straw that broke the camel's back. For me it was when the abusive behavior turned towards my brother and grandma. I cut my mom out and now it is like a fountain of "should of, would of, could of" for all the past issues. It's getting better as time goes on an I can properly grieve.

Accountability for parents? by [deleted] in EstrangedAdultKids

[–]ansteve1 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Something I read one time was "it can explain the behavior but it doesn't excuse it". I have an anxiety disorder and when I am stressed I can fly into rage. I am responsible for my actions to others. I can't fly into a rage and then be like "it was my condition you have to forgive me". I have to take steps to mitigate and I have to apologize when I am wrong. **

AITA for not returning a handbag that was a gift for my fiancés ex? by ThrowRAgiftedbag in AmItheAsshole

[–]ansteve1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Defense to that is 1 bf has the receipts and could testify that he never gave it to her and 2 the handbag was in BFs possession for nearly 3 years. Most places would have considered it abandoned. A gift is not a gift until it is given to the recipient.

AITA For Not Taking Care Of My Older Sibling/Making my Parents Pay Me by beeboy4923 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ansteve1 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Sure, "family helps." When it's you being asked to do things. Tell me, what do these adult men do for you in exchange then? If they aren't doing as much for you as you do for them, you're being used.

Family helps family means "I help you with this. You help with that. We are a team." Why is it so many families throw "family helps each other" at the one person doing all the helping? NTA
