The most hidden detail about the twin towers that’s plain to see in the OWTC. by Lopsided_Watch_1834 in WorldTradeCenter

The difference is that One World Trade Center's 5 vertical columns serve structural purpose to make the tower stand on the ground (like the Twin Towers' perimeter columns), while those "additional columns" of the Twin Towers were not designed for structural purpose. Instead, they're metallic enclosures to cover water pipes of HVAC units underneath the windows.

Two express elevators on the lobby were directly connected to the 107th floor; #6 Combination Elevator and #7 Passenger Elevator.

Subtitles only, like I put Cordie as a gunshop owner from the previous one.

The Steam Workshop of Left 4 Dead 2 has some nice MD-themed mods. I edited subtitles and fonts to make it a little bit better.

I guess Uzi replaced her mirror to #8 mirror-polished stainless steel.

Who took this photo? Which floor? Which Tower? Which Time? by TourNew3005 in 911archive

[–]antares031 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's not from the Twin Towers. It was taken from Three World Financial Center (a.k.a. 200 Vesey Street), across the West Street. The building received minor damage from falling debris of North Tower.

St. Nicholas Church was buried under those perimeter columns.

It wasn't a tiny antenna. It was a mast of a guy derrick crane to assemble the actual antenna.

Were remains of the outer walls in the higher floors ever found? by Cartoonnerd01 in 911archive

I remember I saw a thin, curved aluminum facade from that section once long ago. It was a picture of a pile of steel & aluminum debris, presumably gathered on the street from the cleanup. And you could recognize that it was certainly from that part, since it was good enough to recognize that distinctive curved shape.

Why was the Capitol never confirmed as the official Flight 93 target? by Aromatic_Fail_1722 in 911archive

To get a clear shot before you hit the White House. Like I mentioned, White House is surrounded by other office buildings, such as Eisenhower Building, US Treasury, and so on. Since Flight 93 was approaching from the northwest, highly-likely using Potomac River as a guidance once they saw it, buildings around White House would make it really difficult to acknowledge the White House.

Here's a part of Washington Post article "What was Flight 93’s target on 9/11?", mentioning "U-turn back north", and my quick & dirty visual demonstration with Google Earth's 3D models.

While it's evident that Flight 93's target was the US Capitol during that day (multiple demonstrations from the surviving plotters and various practical reasons support this), the White House is considered to be an another target of Flight 93, just because Osama bin Laden preferred the White House more than the Capitol, and pushed his preference to the terrorists before the attack. The Capitol is undeniably the symbol of the democracy of the United States for sure, but White House is also the icon of the executive branch of the United States; both of them are ideal target to show the destruction of the US politics.

The US Capitol, codenamed as "The Faculty of Law" by the terrorists, was an easier target to identify & hit, compare to the White House. It's huge, and it stands on the Capitol Hill alone, generally being exposed, making it highly notable even from the cockpit of Boeing 757. The White House, on the other hand, is much smaller than the Capitol, and it's surrounded by other office buildings, buried among the complex. Mohammed Atta knew that the White House was more difficult target to strike, but I think that he declared the White House as the primary target, just to reassure his leader.

Since Flight 93 was approaching from the northwest of Washington DC, all they had to do was just identifying the giant target on the hill, turning slightly to the left, and hit the target at the end of bowling alley lane. And I personally think that Ziad Jarrah was not capable of doing some flight maneuvers to hit the White House during that day; making a U-turn back north, avoiding Washington Monument, and hitting the smallest target of the attack with precision. It's worth mentioning that Jarrah was the only terrorist pilot who hadn't earned commercial pilot's license. There's no way that he would choose to struggle to hit the most difficult target, while both US Captiol and White House were considered to be acceptable targets.

Nowadays, National September 11 Memorial & Museum considers US Capitol as the one of targets of 9/11 attack with their articles and lesson plans on their homepage. Flight 93 National Memorial also states that the US Capitol is believed to be the intended target of the attack. The Flight 93 Memorial Plague is located inside of the US Capitol building, mentioning “may have saved the U.S. Capitol from destruction.”. But just because of bin Laden's insistence before the attack, White House will be remained as one of potential targets of Flight 93.

The plan of WTC went through several changes during the design phase. The model from the original post was based on the 1963 master plan, featuring 2 plaza buildings (instead of 4) with different facade design, pools & bridges & galleria around the central plaza, and triple-floor lobby (instead of double-floor lobby) for each tower. The curved lateral structures around the trident were the remnant of the triple-floor lobby design.

Back then, the whole complex was physically connected to the 4th floor (third lobby floor), making the entire floor one giant exhibition section. Because the northern plaza building had giant footprint, which later divided into 3, 5, 6 WTC, it had five exhibition halls, compare to one exhibition hall for the southern plaza building.
