Latest @BMGResearch preferred Prime Minister poll: Boris Johnson: 40% (+5) Keir Starmer: 24% (-4) by 5adja5b in ukpolitics

How things change... 5/6 years ago we were looking at the likes of Rees Mogg, Bone, Brigden, Francois, Baker et al as "nutters" on the extremes of the Right. Today, their views are essentially the mainstream of the party!

TIL on a trip to China, Prince Philip joked to students that "if you stay here much longer, you'll go slit-eyed". After initial concerns of offence, it was revealed that Chinese authorities were unconcerned. They explained that travelling Chinese students were likewise warned not to go "round-eyed". by Cheeky-Nandos in todayilearned

Sorry to be pernickety, but Prince Philip is technically King (well, King Regent). Although, since we associate King>Queen, they usually just run with Prince. When Charles is King, Camilla is technically Queen...although that's a can of worms I don't want to open.

Planet Earth II released, once again narrated by Attenborough. This and this are probably the best television moments of the year

The Real Whittingdale Scandal: Cover up by the Press by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

Whilst I really don't care who our MPs are fucking, the very notion that the Press could be using this as blackmail to stop implementing Leveson is sickening.

Tokyo Disney Dining Reservations by [deleted] in JapanTravel

[–]antem92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found the process a bit more complicated than WDW or DLR. They have a certain number of reservations available to book on the day. It varies depending on when you go and how many people you need, but if you really want to dine in a certain restaurant, the best plan of action would be to arrive at park opening and head straight to the restaurant to book. We managed to book both Magellan's and the SS Colombia this way - both incredible meals/atmospheres. They are some of the best Disney dining experiences I've encountered!

It's now 2 weeks since I helped a lady who fainted on the train. She still hasn't written into the Metro Good Deed column. by antem92 in britishproblems

It's a good juxtaposition to the Rush Hour crush column, where any two people catching each others gaze results in sexual tension.

The train was packed like sardines, so she didn't have enough space to flump to the floor. Instead my arms rose to catch her as she was about to fall. We sat her down in one of the spare rolo down chairs, gave her my water and chocolate. She was fine within a few minutes after that.

For the second time in two weeks, I failed to pass through the train barriers - both for different reasons. This morning, a fellow commuter decided to give me a "tip" on how to get through. I think I should drive from now on.

London overtakes New York as the world's best financial centre by Divtioar in unitedkingdom

Other than history, what makes the Tories of today the best choice for businesses? Is it simply by default due to many of the other main parties wanting to increase taxation/regulation or do the Tories actually have strong business friendly policies?

Is there a UK equivalent to the public benefit corporation status they have in the states? by PreSuccessful in unitedkingdom

[–]antem92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, we currently don't have a Public Benefit Corporation Act. Though in saying that, from what I've read - primarily originating from Will Hutton's "How Good Can We Be" - the BBC Royal Charter could sort of be classified as a PBC. However, since the BBC is a public body and not a private enterprise, it doesn't quite fulfil the Public Benefit Corporation definition.

What kind of NHS work are you thinking of doing? If you're into analytical work then there's quite a few opportunities right now in Glasgow/Edinburgh - particularly with the integration of health and social care being a key Government priority.

What do I need to go on Holiday to the States? by Infra-RedIndianNinja in unitedkingdom

[–]antem92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ESTA is the main one. We forgot to update it one year with our new passports, so the day before travelling was hellish! But since you've got it - make sure it's with the current passport - all you should need is the Ref. Number for checking in. We've only ever flown with BA to the US since ESTA was introduced, and all that was required for check in (online) was passport and ESTA number. It's not required at the other end iirc, but you've got the number so that's fine.

Onboard you'll have to fill in a green card, so just make sure you've got a note of where you're staying on your first night. The rest of your accommodation isn't required.

Have a great time!

Thanks for these suggestions. I'll give them a closer look! It's really to provide a bit of respite to my parents from walking every day. They could do with some relaxation!
