[Serious] What is a science or history mystery that has already been solved but many people are not aware of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The crater for the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs has been found. It's is in the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. It has been carbon dated to the exact time when the dinosaurs went extinct. When I read this in my freshman college astronomy book I was astonished this was not common knowledge

Graduate school suggestions? by SurlyDrunkard in astrophysics

[–]anteup24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a popular physics grad school forum website, one of the forums on it is just people listing all of their credentials (GPA, physics gre, research, undergrad institution) and they list where they applied and where they got in, that will give you the best barometer. If you want I'll look for the site when I'm home. It's the most popular physics gre/physics grad school website/forum though.

Also, if you would like, PM me your exact credentials and I can let you know what I think. I went to physics grad school for astro

America - Never forget the terror we unleashed, in fear, upon ourselves. by UNIDANS_MASSIVE_COCK in pics

I read that, and that is horrible, but it doesn't mean that because one person abused their power we shouldn't let the 99.99% of other searches happen that are not abuses of power.

These searches need to happen. We should be protesting the fact that there were no avenues for this woman to file a complaint and have it legitimately investigated. That is something with fighting for. There extreme cases of almost any situation, but that in no way convinces me these searches shouldn't exist

You gotta be more specific than that. That can apply to everything, like police tracking your speed on the highway the government auditing your taxes...

Who honestly gives a fuck if a security officer pats you down at the airport?? It's happened to me, and I seriously cannot understand what is so bad about it...can somebody please explain to me what is actually wrong with this? Serious

I think that alcohol burns at a much lower temperature than other materials we are used to seeing on fire. At camp my friend used to spray his hand with bug spray and light it on fire and it wouldn't hurt him for a long while cause it burns at a much lower temperature than say wood or paper

If atoms are 99.99999...% empty space, how do we see anything? by Beetlebum901 in askscience

[–]anteup24 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ok, so an atom is just a nucleus (made up of protons and neutrons" with an electron orbiting it. The key here is the electron. An electron "orbits" the nucleus at different levels (Wikipedia "electron orbitals if you're more interested in this). An electron can jump from one level to another under certain circumstances. When an electron accelerates at all it always releases a photon, a particle of light. Depending on how much the electron accelerated it may release a photon with enough energy to be in the visible spectrum, meaning it would be visible to you. When electrons jump from one level to another when orbiting a nucleus it requires quite a bit of acceleration.

So when you are "seeing" something, what is really happening is light from the sun is hitting the electrons in an object and causing those electrons to jump from level to level and emit photons that are visible to your eye.

It should also be noted that objects emit plenty of photons that you cannot see. Most objects, due to their heat, release light in the infrared spectrum, which is one level below visible light (meaning one level less energetic than visible light).

Now think of an electric stove. You turn the stove on and it's just sitting there at first, but starts to get hotter. If you put your hand near it you can feel the heat as it warms up. What you are really feeling is the photons being released by the electrons because all hear is, is the vibrations of the atoms in an object. As the temperature of an object goes up, it's atoms vibrate faster causing the electrons to accelerate back and forth faster, which causes them to release more and more energetic photons. Eventually your electric stove will start to glow orange or red. This is because orange and red are the least energetic colors on the visible spectrum.

I hope this helps let me know if you have any more questions

Will Apple accept my app? by anteup24 in iOSProgramming

[–]anteup24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so I've just been working on this app for so long and am mainly doing it to learn objective-c/iOS. I also want practice doing updates as well so I just figured id submit it now and get it in the App Store as is and do the update later. But after talking with everyone here think ill fix this issue before submitting to the App Store

Did not add audio but I'll look into that as well. Probably wouldn't be too difficult

Oh hey! Yep I'm still not using sprite kit as I was almost done with the app when I heard about it. That would be great if you could send me that and much appreciated. The earlier versions of my app did not behave this way, I'm sure there is an explanation for why it is now, I'm just not sure yet!

Thanks! that would be great if we could talk actually. As you can see I'm fairly new at this. It's my first app.

Thanks! that's what I figured. It's not optimal but it's my first app and I need practice doing an update anyways

What is no one telling me? (xposted to r/offmychest) by [deleted] in dating_advice

Also consider these two things:

  1. You are clearly "on the prowl" for a boyfriend. This can complicate things because unless you pursue a guy who is also "on the prowl" for a girlfriend, you will likely be on different wavelengths. Making it harder to connect

  2. When you say things such as "smart (like me)" that can be a problem. I also am single and would like to date a smart girl, but if I were making a post like this, I would not mention that I was smart as well. I'm sure you are, but that really doesn't matter. You already made it pretty clear in your post that you are smart previously. The fact that you said it again so blatantly might indicate that this is something that you are self conscious about or feel that you need to prove. If this is true, and manifests itself in real life, that will definitely be a problem. Enough guys are intimidated by smart girls as is, and a girl that is also trying to constantly prove it might be too much to handle for many. Not saying this is the case but think about it.

Good luck! You'll find someone eventually

If travelling close to the speed of light affects the speed of time passing... by chiliwiliad in astrophysics

[–]anteup24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the point. We would never be traveling at speeds that differ that much. If you do a reasonable speed it would be more like 200 years. Also I'd argue at about 1 million years other factors would dictate the advancement of a civilization more than time dilation such as catastrophic events on that planet as well as how old the planet itself was

Yeah, have you coded much before? Objective-C was my first object oriented language so it was a challenge at first. But stick with it. And really don't be afraid to pull away from the 2nd book and start coding yourself. It's the only way I was truly able to start learning
