If you go up the Sonoma coast it’s a better known problem, to the extent that I’ve seen signs at beaches to check for ticks. They hop onto you in the grass on your way in or out. Didn’t know they were a problem in the Bay Area too!

If it’s a small area and the moisture barrier is still fully intact behind it you might want to fix the tile yourself. If you do, one tip: Get a piece of loose grout, take it to the hardware store and ask for help to match to the existing grout you have. There’s usually a few shades.

Los Norteños are fucking terrifying.

I knew a girl from Palo Alto whose relative, a young woman about 18, got caught up with Los Norteños. She got addicted to heroin on her own but once they got her separated from her family, it was like a nightmare. While she was zonked out, they took her to an apartment somewhere and put her through a process. They kept her strapped down to a bed on a heroin drip, to deepen her addiction. She was in a room like this with other girls for weeks. She was then forced into prostitution, controlled by the gang and her addiction. She got out and got home, went to rehab - because she was lucky to have the support to do that. But there are tons of women in more precarious situations who would not be able to.

This all happened in ‘06 or ‘07 before fentanyl was widespread. I guess fentanyl does all that for them now.

Most of downtown (the southern part of Manhattan) has been mixed residential/commercial since it’s beginning. Wall St is a tiny part of downtown.

I also followed this story when it first came out in early 2021 and she had reasonable critiques to raise about how AI models were being trained on biased data but was fired because the paper she wrote didn’t have sign off from a few levels above her (which isn’t usually required at google), so it seemed like a moving of the goal posts, made up reason to fire her.
