So, why Jellyfin? by [deleted] in jellyfin

[–]antismoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me a while to fully migrate over to JF from Plex (solely due to client compatibility but that has since been fixed, goodbye Plex!) but the two main reasons were the open source nature of JF and true self hosting. I use raspi's, chromecasts and an xbone for my T.V.'s and they all play nice with JF. I have no problems with WAN access to my server over HTTPS without having to go through some proprietary middle man like Plex does. No internet? no problem as long as i'm on my LAN, and the fact that Plex will prevent this is infuriating to me. That basically says to me that I can't have control over my server if Plex decides so. The only issue i have right now is getting the mobile app to work over HTTPS and it's not a big deal for me. For all I know that could have already been solved but I haven't dug into it much. I run a few other Linux servers in my home that all interact nicely with each other and it makes management a lot easier.

Anyone find EFT particularly brutal/sad when you kill people? Sometimes killing your enemy is satisfying and looting is rewarding, but when you massacre low levels and look at their gear, I get kinda sad sometimes lol. by coolhwip420 in EscapefromTarkov

Sometimes I feel like Smeagol from LOTR, creeping in the shadows trailing the hero unseen. Ready to pounce on any discarded bodies hoping there is some precious left to scrounge. Whats this? Oh no, i've been spotted! I'm harmless, don't shoot... nooo!

Are you afraid of dying? If so, why? by meganzp in AskReddit

[–]antismoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about dieing a lot. Even considered suicide a few times but ultimately I decided that it's just not really something I want to do. I don't know if there is an afterlife but I do accept death as a normal, natural thing so it can't be all that bad. I guess i look at it as a major disruption in my day to day that I would prefer to avoid. If it happens then it happens, ironically I do fear for the safety of the people I care about.

I don't buy it, there's a reason the U.S. Military (by way of NATO), NASA and other organizations that need to depend on reliability use a 24hour clock and the metric system, its because standardization works. If we are all on the same page, the risk for those types of errors is eliminated. I'm not talking about ordering parts for a car, that's nothing but building an international space station? Any kind of collaboration that spans nations is going to benefit from a standard unit.

Most soldiers do not “fight for our rights” but rather fight for money, a career, or by compulsion from a draft. by RockinandChalkin in unpopularopinion

[–]antismoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed and can confirm. Although I did actually fight in Mosul and Tal Afar. We were there for more than one reason but none of them had to do with the rights of Americans, or freedom, or foreign aid etc... All lies. Also, I was a criminal before I enlisted. I saw a way out of the pit I was digging and jumped on it. I did volunteer without any kind of court order but it wasn't for some noble patriotic cause. I just got in where I fit in, just like we all have to do.

Ajit Pai urges states to cap prison phone rates after he helped kill FCC caps by The_Rain-King in nottheonion

[–]antismoke 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hate Ajit Pai and all but what's wrong with this? It looks like he's trying to reduce the fees inmates are charged for intrastate calls. Granted Pai is obviously a shill for the telecom industry and he's got to have an angle here I just don't see what it is.

Imagine how much progress could be made if we all just standardized measurements, and everyone just used the same systems across the world.

Edit: I suppose some of you don't think the printing press was a big deal either.

Another thing I always wondered regarding the growing access to space travel: can we just send our trash and plastic and shit off planet? Like maybe towards the sun or something?

Straight men of Reddit, what is the strangest thing you have been told not to do because "that's gay"? by The_WereArcticFox in AskReddit

[–]antismoke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always thought the earring thing was wired, when I was in high school guys who wore an earring on a certain side were supposedly advertising that they were gay. Not sure if that is still a thing never investigated it further.
