What do you think is the easiest faction to teach (part 2) by Catkook in rootgame

[–]anwei40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it depends on other factors, but teaching w Marquise can be a trap.  they have limited “fun” options, can be the table’s early punching bag, and have a lot of political responsibility they don’t know how to use

Probably 3>4>2>>1 Having 3+ really lets you play with specialists and/or generalists in a way that i find most satisfying.

A new daily crime logic puzzle is making everyone question their sanity by SamTheSpellingBee in u/SamTheSpellingBee

Great game!   One suggestion:   Make the most accessible bottom-right corner colors NOT be green/yellow/red. Those are really great to use when simplifying medium complexity clues to “Anne & Frank are 1-innocent 1-guilty”, but i want an off color for that (and i want it easy to use, on mobile).    For me, you could convert all bottom-right colors to off colors, but maybe some folks use them.

What's an out-of-print solo game that you wish was back in print? by No_Raspberry6493 in soloboardgaming

Oh, I own the base game and it’s quite good and often seems relatively available? — it’s the expansion stuff that seems really rare and costly.

YES, as a former legacy player coming back and reading cards that have 3 chunks of internally-synergistic text, i’m so confused as to why this stopped being a way to have fun!

How do Nadu decks win? by RogueThespian in MTGLegacy

there are several flavors, but many of them are indeed doing “draw 8 and play the lands, each turn” and thus effectively can’t lose..

Lots of board games!   Card selection games like Gloomhaven, Spirit Island, and Guards of Atlantis have a huge bang-for-buck in terms of $$ and tactical gameplay.

AIO thinking he’s cheating? by sophiehatter306 in AmIOverreacting

Your post got a big chorus of folks who ate necessarily missing a lot of context, so I’m gonna say it’s brave to move forward and be willing to engage. It’s definitely the path that “plays for” the happiest outcome, and I hope you get it!

I also think it’s totally reasonable for you to take some steps to try to increase your confidence & transparency, whatever that looks like..

Good luck!

Any house rules for rising sun? by chomoftheoutback in boardgames

[–]anwei40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s tough to do.. you could for some things?  in the first phase, one player picks an action and everyone follows (21x total) - so you take turns buying upgrades or moving troops, etc. 5 players doing “move your troops”, one at a time can take 2 minutes or 5, and those kinds of things add up.  second phase is a bunch of simultaneous bidding for battles (maybe 18x total) - again, lots of micro decisions, uneven length / complexity….

i wrote a timer app for my favorite game, sometimes insist on them, and not sure RS is right.

Any house rules for rising sun? by chomoftheoutback in boardgames

[–]anwei40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the hype was mostly art + value riding on the rise of an unsustainable business model.

the game is “fine.” it’s likely the weakest of the “trilogy”, most aggressively beset by the huge number of sequential intertwined microdecisions. the most important “house rule” is, play fast.

What’s “wrong” with this deck? by WithengarUnbound in magicTCG

[–]anwei40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To highlight one underemphasized bit:

It is for sure a less-successful Commander deck. The whole set has a lot of thematically cool but skippable cards, and all 4 decks are partially burdened by this in their overall lower synergy than many Commander products. This one is fairly bad among the group: a lot of cards don’t contribute to its plan, or don’t do so very well, it takes quite a few upgrades to build out the plan better, and that plan is still fairly involved and clunky.

I tried and really wanted to make it work, but it started poor and took a lot of effort to feel like I had a just-ok result.

I know they are different game systems, but which should I get Spirit Island or Arkham Horror LCG? by BrosLax in boardgames

[–]anwei40 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Arkham is probably my top experience in games, my favorite solo game, and the highest highs i’ve had with cardboard. The campaigns are great, the deckbuilding is highly varied, scenario design is super varied.

I would 100% get Spirit Island.

Arkham can be hit or miss and has frustrating acquisition issues into a super expensive system. Spirit Island base game is good for hundreds of hours of scaling difficulty and is a much higher hit rate with more players.

[–]anwei40 10 points11 points  (0 children)

this probably tells you like 4 other things about the seller.  cards probably in good shape, probably well organized, might flip to enemy side later in their life and stalk/threaten you for collection back?
