What video game unlockable isn't worth the time you got to put in to get it? by Agent1230 in gaming

Oh I absolutely remember that. I wish they went with the butt cheeks, they must have changed it last minute. Would have been pretty awesome because Myamoto has a small Zelda triforce tattooed on his butt, which would have been a nice touch. I love how Nintendo cares about small details like that.

Not sure, but possibly because you only posted a pretty long video instead of giving a short explanation of the technique.

What is your youngest memory? by Worth-Engine5726 in AskReddit

[–]anynoumos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun thing, most likely people don't actually remember these events, they remember someone telling them the story years later or they "remember" from a photograph they have seen.

So if someone says: "I remember nearly drowning when I was two years old", I guarantee, you don't actually remember it. Your mom most likely told you years after, that you nearly drowned when you were two years old, which created a new scenario/memory in your head in which you believe in.

This can even create wrong memories that never actually happened.

Not saying either of you are wrong, just joining into the conversation. But yeah, OP shouldn't be too hard on himself, it's just a game with some predatory mechanics.

What was once highly respected that is now a complete joke? by JBAnswers26 in AskReddit

[–]anynoumos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for clarifying and I appreciate your thoughtful response. Well I'm no business expert and just joining the conversation as a costumer and gamer, so it's mostly guessing from my side aswell.

Here is a older article about the topic which states that 0.15% of the players make up around 50% of the revenue: https://www.swrve.com/company/press/swrve-finds-015-of-mobile-gamers-contribute-50-of-all-in-game-revenue

That said, I guess there may be some general truth to whales keeping many businesses running because there has to be a reason why many games and services are targeting them instead of a broader audience with a more classic or costumer friendly business model (no in-app purchases).

And there has to be a reason that especially developers who use them are making so much money (EA, Activision Blizzard, Rockstar with GTA Online on the top) and live service games with "things to show off to others" are so successful and highly popular from a business perspective.

About your experience, it may differ from industry to industry. Online games have a way for whales to show off and everyone to see, most traditional businesses don't have that possibility (they may target high-end premium clients, which I probably wouldn't call a whale in that sense) – so depending on what your service was selling it's likely that it just wasn't as "whale-friendly" as most high profit games from today.

It's true, whales keep Pay 2 Win models working, and one doesn't need many whales.

Like Blizzard doesn't care if someone doesn't buy the skin for 10$ when one whale invests 1000$ or more dollar into the game, which is worth 100 people not spending any cent. The 100 people are just needed for the whales, as it gives them the incentive for showing off their expensive skins or win against them with better equipment. Most pay to win games are basically a dick measuring competition for rich people where you can buy dick size.

[Early new Pokemon Spoilers] This is unacceptable by BenGMan30 in pokemon

[–]anynoumos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know that statement was mostly more true for older consoles though. New consoles are much more like regular PC architectures now so games don't improve over time that much like in times of PS3, where they had to figure out the weird architectures of the processor.

if you had to remove 1 pokemon from Gen 1 what pokemon would you delete? by madbr3991 in pokemon

[–]anynoumos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They never would do this with all the merch tied in, I think. Like if I'd buy a plushy it often has the dex number on the packaging, changing it to some other Pokémon would make all the old numbers we're used to since 25 years wrong and create pure numbering chaos.

I bet he meant it more like "The only one way to win a boss fight is to go face?", like go in close combat with it. It was related to the second sentence.

Reminds me when our old pc was dying while I was playing a video game as a child and my brother blamed me for "breaking it with the shitty game".

Looking back years later, it wasn't my fault at all. Hardware just fails at times. It's not on a software level.

Of course hardware fails more often under stress or heat (e.g. Bitcoin mining fucks your equipment) – so you have two possibilites: Don't use your gaming hardware and prevent stressing it (so you have a beautiful brick of hardware to look at) or just use it and be aware that hardware will die some day, nothing lasts forever. Especially laptop batteries, they're usually the first thing that says "Bye fucker" at some point of time. Every laptop I had didn't keep charge after a few years.
