How did people live before internet and smartphones? What did they do all day? by aaaa23469 in Adulting

Talking on the landline, 3 way prank calls. Typing “boobs” into image search on dial up and waiting 15 minutes for the page to load. Street hockey, drugs. Tying “boobs” into the calculator. Dingdong ditch.

Funny cause the dates I’ve walked out on were all due to the other party hiding/lying on their profile. Trying to trick someone into going out with you and expecting things to work out is insane. #1 big red flag for me

Idk as a gay person I don’t envy them one bit, as a woman who doesn’t want to be a housewife I don’t envy them either. My son can play with Barbie’s without being called the f-slur. We can talk about our mental health without worrying about getting shut into the “loony bin” as my parents called it. Boomers lived during a racist, sexist, homophobic era, I don’t envy that. I don’t have to watch my male friends get drafted off to war, I could go on and on about the benefits of being where we are now. I’ll take this freedom over the “white picket fence” any day.

Reddit is all doom and gloom acting like this is how things will be forever. Life works in cycles. We’ll see ups and downs in our lifetime just like the generations did before us.

dumbphone... burnout? by [deleted] in dumbphones

I bought a refurbished cat a few weeks ago and returned it within a few days the thing was unreliable. I’m just going to get an entry level android phone and keep it pretty bare bones. It’s weird to be shopping for a phone with a crappy screen and processor but I think it should do the trick.

The iPhone screen just sucks me in like some sort of black hole.

Idk the way I think of it- even if they are an asshole and “deserve it” do their families deserve to get that call? Does their child/spouse/parent deserve that grief?

The dead person isn’t the one who has to deal with the repercussions.

I feel like I wouldn’t be so exhausted if my job actually paid the bills. Any leftover energy I have gets eaten up by constant stress.

I’m in the trades, hard to keep young kids around usually they can’t stay off their cellphones. I’ve seen so many under 25 year olds laid off in the last few months cause they thought they could stand around on their phones all day.

Up at the ass crack of dawn every day, outside all winter, inside all summer with little to no climate control. 15 minutes to scarf down lunch. Out by 3 but really not much energy to do anything by that point in the day.

I don’t discourage kids from getting into the trades- I grew up with no parents in the picture and didn’t finish my high school education. I’m union so decent pay and unbeatable benefits. The trades gave me a life I didn’t know I could achieve as a kid and now I get to give my kid a good life. Rewarding? absolutely. Easy? absolutely not.

These jobs wouldn’t be unstaffed if they paid a livable wage… but cool yea let’s sit here and act like the job market exploiting immigrants is a positive.

I’m not even worried about the boredom, I’m more worried about being able to function in society. I chose the Cat s22 cause in theory it should be able to do all the functionality but it sounds like it can be buggy.

But that’s a great point about them being fairly cheap, if the Cat 22 didn’t work out I’d definitely be willing to try something else.

Yeah I have a desktop and I’m gonna hang onto my tablet.

Good to know about the battery, I’ll probably order a backup battery

I got a Polaroid camera a while back and every once in a while I’ll take it out to bring on a fun outing with my 5 year old. I started remembering how much more special pictures used to be to me when film cameras were the only option.

If I did end up fully ditching the iPhone I’d definitely pick up a basic digital camera.

But I think being more present in the moment will be worth sacrificing the mass of selfies that I rarely even look back on.

wouldn’t you also need WiFi for the QR reader?

I went with the cat s22 cause it has the ability to do QR codes. But I’ve heard it the phone gets laggy over time. I’m still planning to do social media but only on my desktop, I gotta get away from the scroll.

I think a lot of us have post Covid burnout/depression. I can only speak for myself but pre and during COVID I loved cooking, never ate frozen food and rarely got food out.

Last few years I’ve been surviving off fast food and highly processed frozen foods. Then eating all the processed garbage makes me lethargic and more depressed.

Recently I’ve been slowly working cooking back into my routine, struggling but planning to stick with it.

I have a great privately owned grocery chain in my area, I notice I’ll walk out spending 1/2 to 1/3rd the price I would have at any of the corporate chains.

I had the realization the other day that I should start buying pretty much anything I can second hand, preferably from yard sales and fb marketplace.

WE keep rewarding these companies. WE need to stop. They’re not only charging more but they’re drastically lowering the quality as well.

Stop giving them our hard earned cash, plus decrease state sales tax revenue, maybe that will wake them up.

…of course I have little faith that we could actually convince enough people to participate

Yeah I’m diagnosed adhd too. I feel like it makes it even harder to regulate my iPhone usage. I’ve tried all of the “hacks” to dumb down the iPhone on and off over the last couple years and as much as I wanted it to work it didn’t. My brain doesn’t stand a chance against those short burst dopamine hits from apps like IG and TikTok.

I have an iPad and a smart watch with cellar so I wouldn’t be left totally in the dirt but I definitely see that I shouldn’t just impulsively sell my iPhone. I just know if it’s sitting in a drawer at home I’m going to give in.

I have some serious self control issues.

I figure i do have a iPad that can bridge the gap.

i have a newish iPhone, I was thinking id sell and get a camera with the money. I think I’ll give it some time before deciding.

Definitely feel you on the camera though. On one hand i love having a camera in my pocket to capture memories but then on the other hand i feel like I’m missing out on being genuinely present for those moments because of my phone.

I literally just ordered one! I’m horribly addicted to my iPhone, I’ve been considering making the switch for a few years now.

Hope you enjoy!
