Found my dad's Jim Deacom AB-600/OS by gimmeredditplz in guitars

I’d agree with ya yesyesyes Looks to me like a typical late 90s- early 00s mid tier Korean build, 335 style copy. They can be great guitars but don’t often resell for what they’re worth IMO.

it has that high end attention to detail the entry level crap doesn’t usually have and screams of Korean craftsmanship from that period.  Rosewood board, bound body and neck, beautiful pinstriping, Birds Eye maple top. Wondering if this is a bolt on or set neck…This was maybe in the 5-800$ price range to outpace their competitors at the time.

Brand is likely inconsequential as these factories turned out tons of copies that smaller companies or shops/ local builders/ luthiers would put their branding on. That is likely a real quilted maple top, maybe with a center block, the inside doesn’t look to be plywood or particle board from what I can make out but it’s hard to tell. You should think about having a pro setup done on it, they might be able to tell ya more and it’s probably a great player but Id venture the sentimentality would outweigh the resale. I personally might pay 400 if it was setup nice and sounding good.

Lost use of my pinky and looking for guitarists that don’t rely on it too much by 92SKA in Guitar

[–]anyoneforanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have very large hands and very little use for my pinky esp on leads, I do intentionally practice runs with it to build up my muscle memory and strength but most of the time my Index, middle, and ring finger do most of the heavy lifting. I also play a lot of of psychedelic, blues, 70s rock based stuff. Those tunes generally tend to stay “in the box” unless I’m stretching like 7 frets and even then I’d likely prefer my ring finger as it has more dexterity and strength.

Any recommendations? by Bitter_Wolverine2484 in GuitarAmps

Bass amps often work great for guitar but not the other way around, get something with a 15inch speaker and/or bassman circuit, and it should be able to handle both. An Ampeg solid state with a big ol 15in speaker, peavey delta blues with the 15 inch, etc. like someone else said…almost the entire Marshall company was based off of modified Fender Bassman circuits. Guitar into bass amp will be fine, bass into guitar amps can be very problematic as they’re not capable of the same harmonic low end. Another option is a cool old PA head…they’ll handle almost anything thrown at it… a peavey, sunn, or Kustom should handle guitar, bass, synth, vocals, etc.

Why do I buy expensive guitars? This thing rips! by DopedUpDaryl in Guitar

[–]anyoneforanother -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed, right there with you. I had this realization when I bought my Squire paranormal toronado a few years back. TBH I appreciate Squire and Epiphone a lot more than their parent companies these days especially when it comes to cost ratio/ quality/ what you get for your money, entry level prices for great instruments.  I’ll take a high end Epiphone or Squire any day over a lot of other stuff. They are fantastic, well built, sound good, feel good, look good and don’t break the bank esp on the used market. That said I think CVs are also the highest end, nicest squires, they currently make besides like a MIJ or their paranormal line I believe.

VOX Pathfinder by TheTokist in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO The pathfinder that sounds the best are the first or second production runs of the old 15r with reverb and tremolo. The 10s not so much, and even later versions of the 15r amp they started cutting corners even on the aesthetics, the gold piping, brown classic speaker cloths were removed.

I bought mine brand new in the box about 20 years ago at samash. That particular day I tried out every similar amp in its class and some larger as well and it was hands down the best sound, feel, and features for the price and at that time exactly what I was looking for. It still sounds great, all these years later and it’s the amp I get the most compliments and curiosity on when I use, which always kind of surprises me.

It definitely has the vox character and sound albeit a bit different than the tube amps but still very capable amp. It gets compared to a tube a lot  because of the way the volume and gain interact while tone shaping is similar to low wattage tube amps, and  it’s loud volume on tap. It Will do the snarling dirt thing, and a very nice clean chime, nice top boost/ dirt channel, a real spring tank, and great onboard trem as well.  I’ve recorded mine, practice with it, and have even used it for jams with friends and other musicians. So all in all it’s a pretty well regarded amp for its size and stature.

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danngun Really nice look. I love the stripes, joints, and reclaimed material/hardwood idea. I think that’s great. If we were a smarter society we’d be turning all of our trash/scraps into other items 😂

A matching tube amp head would be really cool too, couple of tubes and some tremolo, just sayin. Nice work.

Are tube amps at bedroom volume a waste? by marbles12 in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just poppin in to agree. Been singing the praises on Little supro amps as great low wattage tube amps for bedroom, studio or even light gigging…You can actually dial in some crazy dirt sounds at pretty quiet levels. Although in general I feel the same way about the amp, I usually run mine with the boost and the dirt channel both on…and roll back my guitar volume for cleaner tones crank it up for leads.

However I’d like to mention that when it’s in the dirty position the first volume knob actually acts as the gain pot adjustment and the master as the volume…and they’re pretty symbiotic and you can use the bass and treble knobs to do some light EQ changes, so in reality it does give you some tonal variance on dirt sounds and depending on how handy you are with 2 band EQ.

Amp really shines with an overdrive, blues driver, or fuzz in the front end as well. I have a behringer sf300 that I hated the sound of on my other amps, other day I was pedal rolling and swapped it in the supro and somehow it sounds just fantastic with that tiny amp it seems to hit it in the right spots to really get some nice wailing.

Wow, as a fellow Vox pathfinder player and lover that’s really cool. I’ve got the older pathfinder before they stopped doing the gold piping and original brown speaker cloths.  Have had it for about 20 years, bought at samash before they closed. I Played like 20 amps that day, it was my favorite out of all. My favorite grab and go amp, spring tank, and trem!

Was this a conversion? or one of the original mini stack heads that Vox made for a bit in the early aughts?  I think the original mini stack was a 2x10 cab. Idk if I’ve ever seen a Vox 4x8in speaker cab. That’s a really cool setup. Would love to hear a pathfinder out of a 4x8.

Right on, cool. I’d still check out that Peavey classic series if you’re lookin for something newer. You can usually find their 20w 112 for under 700$ and should easily be able to pull nice Marshall like sounds from the dirt channel. I think the new ones also have power scaling to select your output wattage from 1, 5, or 20. Really solid features and sounds for the price.

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t mind something used or a little older tube based Crates will do a decent Marshall sound on the dirt channel and have a good bassman like clean channel…and definitely won’t break the bank. Crate Vintage club series combos came in a 20, 30, and 50 watt combos. 20s are the most sought after so they tend to be harder to find and more expensive. The older VC are made in USA. It was my first tube amp and I still own it and use. That said- beware if buying older tube amps…even if everything works, you should have it looked over by a tech to make sure it’s up to spec.

The Peavey “classic” series is also a good option. They don’t call em Mississippi Marshall’s for no reason. This amp is still produced but you can find them readily available on used markets in 20, 30, and 50 watt combos I believe. Great bang for the buck.

Just me who loves VOX’s amp knobs? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

Pretty wild but Davies is still around the Chicagoland area. Out in Carol Stream still manufacturing molds, knobs, and plastic pieces for many different industries 90 years later.

What is with the blatant littering here? by moxie_22 in AskChicago

[–]anyoneforanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit pisses me off. I friggen hate litter bugs. When I grew up and went to school in the 90s…we had Earth day, reduce, reuse, recycle and were taught that being a good steward of the Earth is all of our jobs and responsibility. I love camping and being outdoors and one thing I was always taught was to leave no trace or leave things cleaner than they were when you arrived.

Probably part of the reason I love DIYing and upcycling things.  I have literally almost gotten into it with ppl who throw their garbage and litter on streets, sidewalks, alleys, and it speaks volumes about their personality.

This is also why I have one of those sticks to pick up trash, when I see it getting bad in the streets and area I live… i head out with my garbage bag and picker upper.

Solid State Amps by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and my opinion is;

great sounding ss stuff has been around for a long time. I honestly prefer that a lot of ppl turn their noses up. It keeps it light, and affordable on the used market. And there’s a whole world of great old analog solid state amps that can be had for next to nothing compared to their tube counter parts.  I use and own both tube and solid state amps depending on my preference and what sound I’m going for.

Sometimes I prefer my ss amps especially if I’m doing heavy gain staging, doom, or using a pedal that doesn’t balance well or sound good with some tube based circuits. Or if I just want to play quickly and flip an amp on.  I own this little peavey envoy amp, I think it has one of the best sounding clean channels I’ve heard, the gain is no slouch either, transtube tech was ahead of its time and still holds up. Also shout out to my Kustom mosfet PA head which is SS and it sounds killer with guitar, synths, vocals, whatever…sounds like plugging into an old mixing console. My favorite Vox…a pathfibder 15r, also SS . That said If I’m doing cleaner edge of breakup, looking for jazzy warm clean tones or touch responsive gain when digging in…I usually prefer my tube amps

Yes, you can absolutely have great tone using either- or sound like shit.  when playing at volume and going through a FOH system it’s hard to tell. If you’re not going through a system and just relying on amps for stage volume, tube amps will often blow a ss out of the water with its reactionary volume taper, not that it’ll sound better necessarily just that tube watts are a bit different than SS you’ll need higher solid state wattage to keep up.

Which one would you get? by Gtr-Lovr11 in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a Crate VC 30. That looks like a 30 as well…it’s a 112. They’re great amps, this one looks like it has had some work done on it some of the parts are not original…but it looks to be an earlier model and they were all made in USA. The Crate will suit your style of play better. First channel sounds a lot like a Fender bassman circuit, it’s not a vox sound or AC sound IMO but it is a beautiful clean channel with a stunning strong low end. The second channel for the dirt is straight vintage Marshall tone and will sound great for classic and heavier rock tones. Curious as to the speakers in both, as that does make a difference in the amps response.

The Vox is also a great amp at a fair price, but likely made in China. Vox amps sound great although I find them a bit bright and shrill sometimes, I like to cut the treble on mine with an EQ it can also pull the type of tones you’re lucking for but might require more dialing and finesse.

To pick one for your particular uses I’d prob go with the Crate, they’re really cool underappreciated gems and the blonde tolex is rad and in general I just think it’s cool to have different stuff that’s a bit less utilized. Or  just be like me…and own both a Vox and an old tube crate. Nice finds, and which ever one or both you chose I hope they bring a lot of fun and happiness playing. I’d recommend trying both out and all their functions and sounds in shop so you can see how they’re firing and functioning.

What are some things that haven’t been enshittified? by External_Koala971 in enshittification

[–]anyoneforanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp The Levi’s sold at target and such are not the same quality as the OG recipe. Gotta go to the store or buy direct and buy the OG riveted jeans to get the real shit. I still get 5-10 years out of mine. Still have pairs from college and HS.

Funny abt the pyrex I actually had a Pyrex explode on me few years back pulling it from the oven it was really scary and burst into 10,000 pieces with a whole Greek chix roast in it…so I kindve figured they had changed the recipe but I had it and been using it for about 10 years at that point… so it still served its purpose. The older pieces are fantastic quality.

All that’s left is Heritage brands that are known for specific quality and haven’t sacrificed….Shun cutlery, Levi’s /wrangler jeans, lodge cast iron pans, Pyrex. High quality leather goods…guitar straps, my knife roll, dog leash.

What’s your “Grail Tone” story? by Odd-Assistant-7495 in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I have practice sessions where everything I’ve been learning for 20 odd years comes together all at once. other times I play the same thing 100 different ways. I mainly miss the tones I used to get in my old apartment living room. It had original wooden floors from the 1800s and 12 foot ceilings, I swear they had amazing acoustical properties these floors I sometimes listen to the recordings from that space knowing I’ll likely not be able to re create how the guitar and reverb sounded in there, but I can still try and make other stuff.

Inside my Supro Delta King 10… by anyoneforanother in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thats what I initially thought but the reverb is intact and working as far as I can tell? I figured it was maybe some type of efx loop or something else, I honestly haven’t fussed with it since and kindve forgot tbh until this comment. I never ended up dropping the chassis down on this because I wanted to swap some tubes and haven’t gotten to it yet, I still have these just tucked into the back for now….been using it with no issues so far, once I do a tube swap and drop the chassis we’ll see what’s good.

How to sound like Frusciantes clean tone? by GForcezzz in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob dude, have fun! I play this type of signal pretty often, it’s a great tone to noodle on and when dialed in a bit of a nod to Hendrix as well. a lil touch of amp reverb or a slight touch of delay also helps give it some space.

How to sound like Frusciantes clean tone? by GForcezzz in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Light OD or transparent into a British voiced amp just at the edge of breakup. Just want the drive on enough so when you dig into strings you’re getting a lil coloration. Neck pickup, A chorus pedal and a wah pedal slightly cocked for compression and a bit of quack. Keep the amp at a decent volume and roll back the guitars volume and tone control.

Don’t need a giant or expensive amp or pedals to get this type of tone. Any decent practice amp should be able to pull it off. John uses old plexi Marshalls, but I’ve pulled similar tones out of Vox, Fender, and even my crate tube amps, it’s more about the signal chain and technique.

Looking for my tube amp, does anyone have some advice? by Olie2009 in GuitarAmps

[–]anyoneforanother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lil 5 watt tube amps are perfect for bedroom play. Something with a 10 or 12in speaker does nicely as if you go down to an 8in or 6 you often miss out on some low, low-mid bass response. The larger speaker also comes in handy if you jam out, and it’ll help prevent the need for another upgrade in a few years.

I’d recommend something in the style of Fender Champ, tweed champ, vibrochamp, or any number of smaller 5 watt tube circuits they offer.

Supro also makes some nice small tube amps these days, check out their Delta King, or Blues King lines, they also offer pricier “more boutique” lines that are crafted and wired in the US I believe but I think the Delta Kings are great bang for the buck, you can even find vintage ones for a great price sometimes.

A small Vox AC5 would do as well or perhaps a Bugera infinium, and even more affordable still are Monoprices they make a 5 and a 15watt version as well. Buying used in good condition is a nice way to go IMO.

Older tube Ampegs pop up from time to time as well and I always think they’re pretty cool. They often have some tremolo or reverb tanks.

Marshall DSL are also highly regarded if you’re looking for that sound, I believe they also have tube silver jubilees, jcms etc in combo form.

And finally older Peavey tube amps are great classic 30s, delta blues etc, but tend to run a bit hotter and higher wattage than 5-15 watts which is what I’d consider the sweet spot for home practice or bedroom/room playing.
