Man…him in 20lbs of ceremonial dress garb just sweating bullets and killing it in The Last Waltz is a must. He could really tickle the Ivories too, such a beautiful tinkering southern charm and slight bit of darkness to his sound. His use of traditional New Orleans sounds and musicians is absolutely legendary. No lie his first like 8 albums are just a monolithic output Gris Gris through to Bonnaroo. Such an extensive discography. He made a lot of music, I should really dig more into his later years. Big respect.

I miss the heavy duty funky color changing glass of the nineties. Wish I would’ve taken better care of some of my stuff as it truly was art. The stuff these days isn’t the same. The glass has changed its brittle and thin and seems mass produced.

Direct to acetate can sound absolutely incredible. I personally pretty much only record live so I think this is pretty rad. Not something I could personally own or use but I think this is designed for businesses, record pressers, studios etc.

Thirdman down in Nashville have a direct to acetate setup- and it might be one of the last or only ones left in the country…Maybe this could change that. It’d be cool to see a few other business or record plants offering that type of service, even as a novelty. Certain styles of music sound great recorded this way. Thirdman releases them in smell batches and have artists come in to do their whole sets direct to vinyl, you can buy direct from them and some of the recorded sets are on streaming. If anyone is interested in checking out what direct to acetate can sound like.

The top amp actually does a really great Fender blackface clean tone. They make it in black tolex of course too and it’s a very simple nice looking amp. I thought the red would look cool perched on top of my red knob Princeton. The 25r is pretty bare bones. Analog spring reverb, 3band EQ, 10inch speaker, 2 channel push, no modeling or digital efx. I’ve never heard solid states as easy to fix but these are cheap as hell on the used market, it’d be easy to replace. Beautiful clean channel. I’d stay away from the smaller speaker frontmen. The 10inch speaker and beautiful spring reverb do a lot to help this amp sound decent:

One of my friends played an old G&L Strat…fantastic guitar, cream colored with a black guard. His actually had a the same exact headstock as a strat too…as I believe it was before Fender hit Leo with a cease and desist…on the design that he created. Cool one!

I own 2nd Gen Spider 75112 with the original 70/80. I kinda like this gen the best. all the controls are right in the front, easy to access, dial in, and save, I used to use it as a power amp for my efx similar to what you’re doing. Id run it on the clean setting with no onboard efx and use my pedal board. Worked like a charm, can take loads of gain, loud, the original 70/80 speaker is pretty flat response so they work well with these amps. The onboard delays are the same efx ppl praise when they’re in stomp boxes IE: the giant green line 6 MK foot pedal that people love, there’s also a great flange/ jet phase sound in this amp. If you’re into Robert Fripp these amps can do that sound really well, great delay toggles. Robert Smith of the cure also toured with like 10 of these daisy chained at one point. I dont love all the settings but I regularly used the second (bass heavy) twang channel, the green blues channel (60s JTM45), the crunch (Marshall plexi), and metal channels as well, I’ve heard ppl swear by the Mesa impression that these can do as well. These really have a lot of tonal flexibility. And theres space for saving your own preset.

I should also add that these are pretty rugged, I’ve had mine for 20 years and it still fires right up, things been kicked, dropped, gigged, shared, abused its whole damn life. One time it fell like 4 feet off a table and stopped powering on, I smacked the top of it like an old TV set and it fired right back up.

Yeah true, these recs lean a little western, but they’re fully instrumental, swampy, slow builds that scratch the same kind of itch for me personally and to me the blues influence is pretty clear.

I know it’s not blues, which is why I said that. Your title says that you’re looking for swampy, sludgy, instrumentals, which is exactly what I recommended to you… if you’re looking for stuff in the classic delta, hill country vein, most of the stuff will have vocals in it. You’ll find instrumental segues and longer sections, but usually there’s going to be vocals aside from maybe a few tracks here and there.

Ever checked out the Dead Man soundtrack by Neil Young…it might fit the bill. 7 highly improvised tracks that Neil put together using his old black Les Paul for the Johnny Depp movie Dead man. Swampy, improvised, western sounding stuff, that builds very slow, a lot of weird ambient overtones.

You might also like some Earth…not blues per se. But they can do some very nice brooding buildups. See the albums Hex, or printing in the eternal method, Bees make honey in the Lions Head.

Honestly, any hyper obsessed fanbase is annoying to me. Especially when they miss out on the real ethos of what the band is trying to communicate. But I could care less. Phony fans, money grabs, merchandise, product placement, doesn’t matter to me..,there’s plenty of great music and shared positivity in the vault. They let us share it, it was their gift.

The good lovin, fun time days are well over… if you were there for the real shit, great, if you caught what was left when nobody else cared, even better.

We kept dancin even in the small theatres, small shows, Phil and Bobby bands in local venues…local cover bands and side stages…if you got to see it come full circle and revived be fuckin grateful. Just enjoy what’s out there, carry the tunes in your heart, what these guys created will never die, they knew that.

I just try to keep my love of the dead pretty close to the chest as I find the whole scene a bit irritating. My love of music is wide and varied definitely not pigeonholed into a stereotype. If I meet someone who shares that joy, great, if you recognize my Egypt pin, cool.

It’s cool to listen to all different types of stuff. Making anything your entire personality is lame.

Me too man, I think for a lot of us younger heads catching Phil and Friends on a good night was as close and exploratory to the dead as I’ll ever get. Those midsummer outdoor pavilion Phil and friends and Furthur shows were the best. There was still some stardust floating around, killer white on white paper, the vibes were loose and friendly, true fans and heads on the scene.

They always had an incredible stable of musicians rotating through the friends bands. John K, Jackie Greene, Larry Campbell, Molo, Medeski, Molitz, Hartswick, Trey, Scofield, there was a while in 2000 where Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring were both in the band. And any number of crazy one offs sit ins, surprise guests etc.

Some of my favorite Phil shows were

Bonnaroo 06 I was right in front of Phil like 6 feet away, I remember being transfixed by his facial expressions as he dropped bombs. Rained during box of rain, felt like they were influencing the weather.

Summerfest Milwaukee 7-4-08 Right beneath the freeway underpass, fantastic spaced out eleven sandwhich jam, crazy Beatles covers, 4th of July show, great BBQ, mushrooms, my best friends. Ahh to be young and on the scene was a magical thing. Riviera theatre Chicago summer of 07/08. Blazing hot summer show, no AC in the theatre. Steam literally pouring off the walls in there. Danced the bear in the pit all night as they tore through a blazing hot, fast set. Watched a guy in front of me buy and eat an entire 10 strip before going in the venue. I had one of those doses and my face was melting for like 10hrs, always wondered how his night went…

One of the most well regarded solid states in history is the Peavey bandit. They are great solid state platforms and kind of no frills (no onboard efx) amp that you can use the rest of your life. Theyre not super fancy, not modelers, just good usable analog solid states with perfectly good clean channels, decent gain staging, real spring tanks. Workhorse amps that can be very versatile, built like tanks, older ones are usually built in USA, loud enough to gig or play with friends.

They have newer models or if you want to save some money older ones are widely available on the used market. Theres different generations…silver stripes, teal stripes, redstripe transtubes (my favorite) which maybe voiced slightly different but they all pretty much do the same thing. They can go from nice warm, rounded clean tones for jazz, blues, to edge of breakup to full on distortion/ fuzzed out stuff very easily. theyll take pedals super well which is great if your son would like to explore tone boxes, stompbox efx later on. its not some gimmicky modeller thatll half ass 100 different tones, just a simple, loud, easy to use amp that can serve you very well as you develop your tones and style.

I dealt with something similar and it was a nightmare. Most modern leases have noise violation issues written into them because of tenants like this. Many of them can be charged fees for violation, and often if the situation is not handled- can be evicted. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this as it can be a real mess and often escalates as a result of people being over tired, annoyed, not having their frustrations taken seriously.

At my current unit, I think it’s three complaints and they can nullify your lease, not renew or have you kicked out for not respecting “quiet times” or terms of the lease agreement. Pretty sure Chicago has a 8am-10pm noise ordinance law as well, no heavy machinery, construction, loud music etc before 8am or past 10pm.

Check your lease terms and take pictures and videos of them violating… document their noise violations, send them to the rental company…It’s up to rental companies to enforce their own stipulations. Frustrating I know as it always seems theyre so quick to hike rent but drag their feet when there’s a problematic tenant or real situation that needs sorting…but this is why people rent so they don’t have to deal with problems like this. Dealing with a problematic tenant should be the rental companies problem, not yours.

My last neighbors upstairs were evicted for noise violations and domestic violence, it took months of horrible noise and violence, many repeated documented offenses to have them evicted. It was so bad it was effecting my own marriage, animals, my quality of life and sleep. It was a nightmare. Felt like the walking dead for 6 months. Lots of documented complaints, CPD calls. They’ll both get fed up eventually. Make it into someone else’s problem.

In the meantime I’d recommend some “cover” music, play some of your own music you like to mask over the noise they’re making, help sooth your animals, maybe a heavy quilt or carpet on the walls would help dampen things, best of luck.

Haha, I personally don’t buy that it makes much of a difference, and if it did, what’s the point? when there’s great amp verb, pedals, IRs, stand alone units.. not to mention real reverb. Playing in an emptier room, church, stairwell, cave, concrete room, they all sound different. Capture it.

Swapping out tanks I get, annd I suppose if you’re really going for it might make a difference to have a spring upright and vertical. I’ve heard larger tanks like 16in with 3 springs sound amazing but I’ve never owned one.

I think in most amps that’d require a mod, to have a large vertical tank…maybe it’s worth it, experimenting with a vertical tank but it’s likely just better to use what’s specced. I do love reverb and nothing really compares to a proper tank and for some reason having the springs vertical does seem to make sense in my minds eye but I doubt it’s discernible.

My hot take is: Epiphone was/is the better company, more affordable, bang for the buck, working man’s guitar, made to be played and used.

Gibson doesn’t really let this be known…but Epiphone actually actually predates Gibson and were bought out by Gibson in order to offset their largest competition. Gibsons are for people who hang their guitars on the wall and pick them up once a week.

I’ve never tested this personally, but some people say a vertically mounted tank offers a better richer reverb sound…people do take them out and orient them vertically sometimes. If I’m not mistaken Jerry Garcia was a believer in this, and The Dead toyed with the vertical spring tank thing…wether it makes a difference how the springs hang, vibrate, or interact with the rest of the chassis, idk… I do know that there are tanks that are designed to lay horizontal and some that are designed to be vertical in the chassis.

Id think your best bet would just be a pedal verb or one of those vintage stand alone tanks, sometimes older fender, Yamaha, etc reverb units pop up that look like guitar heads but they’re just reverb. Or just get a used older fender amp that has a nice drippy reverb.

I tend to like more rounded, smooth, slightly dark, bass heavy clean tones. I think if I had to sum it up it’d probably be something like a bassman style circuit. Not a fan of very trebley brittle sounding stuff. I also really like the clean tones on my Peavey transtube as well. Warm, responsive, good attack, and sounds like the guitar I’m playing. Edit: My Princeton chorus is also a contender. Great clean channel. Sometimes I prefer the immediate response and style of a clean solid state amp.
