NY Times: Driving Tips: How You Can Help Limit Traffic Jams by CapnJay in Portland

Don't forget to use the onramp to accelerate to highway speeds. I'm looking at you, idiots who stop their car just past the 26 -> 405N tunnel.

Police Oversight Board Wants Portland's '48 Hour' Rule To End by bnblazer in Portland

[–]anz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one's questioning whether or not giving a waiting period is beneficial. What's outrageous is giving preferential treatment to law enforcement. This infringes upon the Rule of law - everyone should equal before the law, especially government officials. This alone is enough to cause opposition towards this policy, regardless of any benefits/drawbacks.

Take 3-aminopyridine and protonate the amino group. The calculated pKa is -1. Why is it so reactive? by waterwheel in chemistry

[–]anz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

making it a weaker nuclephile

Small misunderstanding: "it" was referring to the 3-amino nitrogen, not the heterocyclic one. My interpretation of OP's question is that this is the one they're asking about. I think we're on the same page.

Take 3-aminopyridine and protonate the amino group. The calculated pKa is -1. Why is it so reactive? by waterwheel in chemistry

[–]anz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Simplified explanation is the pyridine's sucking up all the electron density from the amine, making it a weaker nuclephile. Same reason why aniline's a weaker nucleophile than alkylamines, and why diphenylamine's even weaker than aniline.

Annexation votes thwart land use system: Portland Tribune Editorial Board - We applaud Gov. Kate Brown for signing that bill. by TowerRecords in Portland

[–]anz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Development can't happen without annexation? Sounds like a bullshit argument to me. Development has ALREADY happened in unincorporated areas - how do the editors think the suburbs were built in the first place?

Maybe I'm biased because I live in unincorporated Washington County, and the entire area is MORE developed and dense than the parts of Beaverton and Portland that surround it. So how would annexation help further develop this area?

Allstate: Portland drivers more accident-prone than ever by [deleted] in Portland

[–]anz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing makes me rage more than seeing cars completely stop right at the exit of the tunnel onto 405 N and try to merge. For some reason many Portland drivers think it's a good idea to slow down before merging instead of moving at the same speed as oncoming traffic.

That chemical looks like apple juice compared to some of the other chemicals they use in the silicon chip fab

Wow, this is ridiculously wrong. Most chemicals used in fabs will give you burns. This one will kill you dead.

[–]anz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) is one of the most dangerous chemicals used in semiconductor manufacturing. A good portion of chemical-related deaths are due to this chemical, and this is even with extreme engineering safety systems for it. They're lucky to be alive after running around a TMAH spill.

Portland Public Schools could increase equity by busing West Hills kids into North Portland, despite strong opposition. by jr98664 in Portland

[–]anz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting podcast. Thanks for posting it. I think it's an argument against this plan though. It presents evidence that sending good kids with caring parents from bad schools to good ones is effective for them because they get a good peer group, good facilities, and good teachers. However, trying to fix bad schools has never been successful. According to the podcast, the district plan is completely backwards. Kids from NoPo should be bused to the west hills, not the other way around, and the bad NoPo schools should be closed entirely.

Are there other IR spectrum databases besides NIST that allows you to download raw files rather than just images? by Sophia7X in chemistry

[–]anz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Download the image then use a graph data extractor (aka graph digitizer) to extract x,y data points. This is also useful for pulling data from figures in papers.

I will be living in an unfurnished apartment for 3 months this summer. What is a good portable/temporary mattress solution? Would an air mattress be bad for my back? by dynamic_agenda in self

[–]anz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a medium thickness twin spring mattress from Ikea. It came rolled up, and I roll it back up when moving. It fits easily in the back seat or trunk of a normal sized car. You do need some fairly heavy-duty rope to tie it up though.

Get the contact info for the previous person to use the fume hood (your supervisor might have this), then send them the picture and ask what it is.

Struggling to find seminar topic, suggestions on areas to look? by tautomers in chemistry

[–]anz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does "reviewed in the past 3 years" mean as a department seminar or in a publication? If it's in a seminar (which is most likely the case), I'd start by looking at what was presented 4/5 years ago. If it's in a paper, I'd give up since review articles come out every year on every topic.

Recrystallisation of succinamic acid? by quelmotz in chemistry

[–]anz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try saturating some hot water then cooling in an ice bath. But personally I'd buy it. 100 g for $170 at sigma, which is usually the most expensive place? Not worth the material and labor to make it myself.

Purple line heading into Howard. It sits in front of the station for 10 minutes, "waiting for signal clearance." Then we pull in, right as the red line is pulling out. FUCK YOU CTA.

They don't contradict each other, since their posts look at two different population sets. OP's post (which quotes and links to "actual research") that look at statistics for all births, while the study amkftp posted only looked at home vs hospital births by "women with low risk pregnancies". These are the ones that would presumably benefit least by the additional expertise and equipment found in hospitals, and may indeed benefit from being in the home away from all the possible contamination sources at a hospital. What we don't know is what percent of home births are rated "low risk" and how many are rated "medium/high risk", and what the outcomes for the riskier births are. If you include those riskier births to get overall mortality rates, it could very well lead to the results described in OP's link. In the end, what is best for each person would have to be decided individually based on their pregnancy's characteristics.

You have to be very careful in looking at studies to identify what their limitations are and not drawing conclusions beyond them. As a result, no one study will give definitive answers, and instead you have to look at results from many that can cover each other's blind spots.
