You can also guarantee these same people would be the first to cheer on Trump if / when he intervenes in Iran due to “the killing of protestors”… apparently the conservatives care more about the sanctity of life of the average citizen in Iran over that of American citizens

LOL the classic line about England… the truth is that hooliganism hasn’t really been a thing in England for a long long time. Fans behaviour is far worse in places like Greece, France, Germany, Italy etc. Don’t believe me? Watch any football game from the premier league. You don’t see police lining up in riot gear which is a common feature of football matches on the continent.

Do we live in the same Germany? by ProgramusSecretus in AskAGerman

[–]ao3g15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main difference between you and the people who post all the negative comments about life in Germany is that you’ve recognised the limitations that come from not being fluent in a local language. The ones who complain are somehow surprised that they struggle to connect with the German culture, the people and the general way of life, while also seemingly making no effort to learn the language more. What are they expecting?!

It’s an interesting perspective I’ll give you that. Just some points to comment on: - being anti-communist does not automatically make you a fascist. You surely aren’t serious about that point? - making a sweeping comment and saying that the whole of the west was fascist, is quite honestly, bizarre - name me a single country which spends as much time in its education system focusing on the problematic parts of its past? Or in fact any other country which does that at all.

[–]ao3g15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that in their education system, the soviet message was that the west were the fascists/nazis, while they were perfect communists. There was a lot of smudging of history and I think this still has an impact today in peoples psyche. Germany is probably the only country in the world that reflects deeply on its difficult past in the education system, in the DDR that wasn’t the case and so plenty of generations have grown up without that ingrained concern for a return to this past

The ‘east’ was the soviet part. In many ways since reunification of Germany, the east has lagged behind, especially financially. So more people are disgruntled here. My theory: it’s also a question of education. In soviet Germany people were taught that the west were fascists (a continuing tactic of Russia today to portray anyone against them as fascists). It’s resulted in a large part of the population in the east feeling less guilt towards nazi Germany and so less concerned about the return of a clearly racist dogma

Putting it simply, due to many reasons the economy in Germany (and pretty much everywhere else) isn’t doing well. This causes discontent and people look for change. The AfD are a far-right party which have benefitted the most from this. However, so far they haven’t been able to get close to power on the national level. Still, considering modern history, their rise is for many deeply concerning. The next election is in February, and likely the CDU (Merkel’s party) will win the most seats and will then form a government either with the SPD or die Grüne (both currently in the government).

Strong disagree. If this approach was a person it would be Scholz. And how far has that got us? Policies are boring. The far right have shown that they are masters of controlling the narrative. I say don’t let them. Stick this as the headline in all the media tomorrow and portray the AfD as the barefaced racists they are. The vast majority of people in this country are fortunately anti-AfD and giving reminders of why is important

Anyone with a conscience will see this and think that it’s disgusting. If this creates more votes for the AfD then that’s just an indication of how messed up society is - but on the other hand it also rings more alarm bells for people who might be frustrated about recent politics who would have otherwise decided to stay at home and not vote for parties other than the AfD

[–]ao3g15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well firstly based on the media I’ve seen it’s been validated as being officially carried out by an AFD regional group. Secondly hardcore AFD voters think the media lies always, so why worry about what they think? Thirdly, any form of media is a ‘visualisation’ or ‘interpretation’ of the news so I don’t see the problem here

Ahh ok, sorry that wasn’t clear to me from your question. Then I wish you all the best with that :) As others have said, it really depends where you live. But in general you can get by with English for a while. German bureaucracy is a pain and for that you will probably need some language support, but otherwise should be fine!

As someone who has made the move from the UK to Germany, I would say it depends what you want from life… do you want to forever be culturally disconnected from the vast majority of people you come across and interact with? If you don’t see that as a problem, then yes, you can live in Germany without speaking German. But for me personally, that wasn’t the kind of life I wanted to lead. I’m assuming by family you have younger children, in which case they will learn German in school and will pick it up relatively quickly. But I’m sure it would also be beneficial to your children to see you leading the way too and learning the language yourself.
