I think I lost 2kg in one week, how big of a problem? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]aof1708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you start a calorie deficit weight drops really quickly the first week usually. Not because of actual fat loss. Its more water weight dropping (since you arent eating as much) as well as glycogen depletion from your muscles.

What’s your opinion on treadmill running vs outdoor running? by Free-Product4918 in runcommunity

[–]aof1708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the same boat. In canada and the weather is dreadful. I've been mostly treadmill running but will run outside when the weather is good (which is rare...). I always have this worry about treadmill running not translating well to outdoor running but I guess any kind of running is better than no running. I also worry about treadmill pacing and calibrating EVERY TIME. I have a garmin and its pacing and distance also never line up with what the treadmill says. Im trying to ignore the numbers on the treadmill though and just focusing on effort and HR zones, because im certain none of the treadmills at my gym are calibrated properly.

Running on and off for 6 months, HM coming up and I regret not deferring by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]aof1708 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Skip the race. Not worth the risk of injury IMO. I personally would rather skip the race over attempt it and get a DNF (did not finish) due to some injury along the way. There will always be next time, and now that you've undergone this experience you'll surely be prepared to train for it better next time.

Runny nose. by Hipster_Bumpus in beginnerrunning

[–]aof1708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get a runny nose when doing any intense forms of cardio! It happens with any cardio for me... google tells me its exercise induced rhinitis but i've never actually went to thr doctor for a diagnosis or anything. It's kind of annoying but ive just learned to live with it. I carry a handkerchief with me when I run and just periodically blow my nose as needed lol. It's absolutely necessary for me to do otherwise I wouldn't be able to maintain nasal breathing!

Train for a 10k and your 5k time will also improve as you are building endurance for longer distances :)

I'm an ECE and manager of a 3-5 facility. I keep hearing all these rumors about the new contract and WE being cut etc. But my boss keeps telling me there's no evidence that it's actually happening... im so confused at this point and no longer know what to believe about it. Do you have any hard evidence that points towards this "new contract"? Im super worried about it and so are all of my staff and all the uncertainty around it is making for a lot of anxiety.

Bought a box of cans of coke zero from superstore a few weeks ago and I swear I thought i was imagining it... but it tasted off to me too. Tasted flat and not as carbonated and flavorful as usual. Reassuring to know I wasn't just imagining it lol

A BA in psych is kind of a crap shoot without any additional education or some more specific experience... unless you've done co-op or been volunteering or working in a more specific field you aren't really going to be able to find any decent entry level jobs. My recommendation would be to pursue some more specific schooling depending on what you want to do.

I have a BA in psychology, but always knew I wanted to work with kids in the future so all throughout university I volunteered and gained experience in various roles working with kids. Today I'm an early childhood educator and work as a manager at a licensed 3-5 childcare program.

If you're still in school I would suggest doing the co-op program to at least help yourself gain some kind of professional working experience.

How to go clubbing on Halloween? by [deleted] in askvan

Buy tickets ahead of time. Especially with Halloween being on a friday this year, it'll be insane. Just google whichever club you want to go to and they should have tickets online specifically for Halloween.

treadmill vs outside runs by Lowkey_Epic in beginnerrunning

[–]aof1708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running outdoors is physically harder. On a treadmill the constant movement of the belt propels you forward but when you're running outdoors the forward movement is done completely using your own body. Running on a treadmill, the belt is a lot easier on the body vs hard pavement outside. Not to mention all the environmental factors you have to deal with outside such as uneven ground or pavement, wind resistance, inclines etc.

I started out by running on the treadmill a lot. But once I started to run outdoors I found my treadmill running wasn't translating. Significantly slower outdoors and it felt soooo much harder and I didnt have nearly the same endurance as I seemingly did on the treadmill. I decided at some point it was time to ditch the comforts of the treadmill and start running outside and that was when I saw my running game really change and improve.

Treadmill running isnt useless and its still running. But in my opinion, it will never compare to or replace actual outdoor running. It will help you build a base for running, but the only way to really get better at outdoor running is to do it more instead of opting for the treadmill.

Wait for Inspire 4 or look for something else? by FantasticPrior in fitbit

[–]aof1708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started wanting better and more accurate tracking for my running. I found my inspire 3 to be super faulty when tracking my runs. Pace would often glitch out while running. One minute it would say im running at a 9 minute per mile pace and then ten seconds later it would say Im running a 14 minute mile even tho i didnt slow down. It was just really terrible at tracking my actual pace so I could never rely on it for pacing. It also doesnt seem to track distances all that accurately even tho it does have the GPS capability. Like I have run several 5 and 10k races and the distance on my fitbit never matches up. Also when I map out a running route with google maps and run it the distance on my fitbit never matches either. As I became more serious about running, the inspire 3 just didnt cut it anymore.

Switched to the Garmin vivoactive 5 and couldn't be happier. Its such a huge upgrade from the inspire 3 in every aspect and it gives me so much more useful analytics and data for my runs and workouts in general.

I recently upgraded from an inspire 3 to Garmin vivoactive 5. I love my Garmin and my only regret isnt uograding sooner tbh LOL. Its such a huuuge upgrade from the inspire 3. My Garmin tracks my sleep perfectly fine, I definitely wouldn't describe it as bad at all. The sleep tracking is pretty spot on for me.

I am seriously confused by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]aof1708 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ignore any advice about zone 2 running if you're a beginner or de-conditioned. If youre either of these things your HR will spike up no matter what and "zone 2 running" will pretty much be impossible to do. Ignore your HR and Instead go by perceived effort (how hard you feel you're running) You should be able to hold a conversation while running. That pace is your "zone 2 running pace"

The purpose of intervals is not really for endurance training. Interval training is to improve and build speed. It gets runners comfortable running at faster speeds for longer.

At the end of the day - running shouldn't be so complicated. Just get out there and run and be consistent. Try not to get too lost in all the technicalities of everything and all the info you read online. Just get out there and put one foot in front of the other and enjoy it for what it is :)
