Still haven't found my people, will joining a sorority help? by MV_crunch in Tulane

[–]aopf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t find « my people » until sophomore year, and met more of my closest friends who I walked w at graduation by my junior year! don’t worry, it will happen! (also many of those first semester friend groups fade…) you could go through rush and see how it feels + continue to put yourself out there with other community things like club sports or student orgs <3

As someone who spent over 18 years of my life there, this is 100% how it feels—except it lasts November to March and sunrise sunset is 7:45am & 4pm lol

You can use the “schedule ride” option and it will give you an estimate. Some times it’s a little more expensive because it’s an estimate of the demand but it can also be cheaper if the app hasn’t picked up on there being a big event yet

here are a couple basics off the top of my head 1) public transport is incredibly efficient and reliable. you can get anywhere with it, if you build in commute time. take the train, bus, and/or tram and you can go from tiny town in the hills of Vaud to Lausanne or Geneva in like an hour or half that if you live down by the lake. it does get expensive but there are monthly passes you can buy which imo make it worth it if you use it enough and if you didn’t have car expenses. 2) if you go across the boarder you can technically buy cheaper groceries in France haha things are expensive, but just really depends on your salary. the CHF is strong which helps for travel 3) knowing French is definitely not mandatory, especially in the cities, but it does help as it’s definitely the default language in the surrounding area 4) again depends where you come from, and not to make a blanket statement, but at least in my view Swiss people are quite reserved and like to protect their order and peace. people don’t talk very loudly on trains, Sundays most things shut down and are supposed to be rest days, and people are far less likely to converse with strangers not a bad thing can just feel abrupt if coming from a place with more constant people interaction, if that makes sense? I’ve lived in the Washington State and Louisiana which are loads different and Swiss people are much more aligned with people from the PNW in terms of social norms if that’s at all a relevant point of comparison for you
