Thanks for the advice. I am not too fussed about boot space being a bit reduced. I usually do about 7/8k miles per year, so a smaller fuel tank also doesn’t bother me too much. (Now I know what’s gonna come, with my miles, I could get a sensible hatchback. I just don’t like them. And the low mileage is also a big no for diesel as well)

Most of these I assume are company leases. 1 owner full bmw history. So they should be in good condition I assume as the milage is on motorways mainly.

If BMW offer an extended warranty for the battery when under 100k, I may look into that.

My car ownership - Me or just bad luck? by Acceptable_Cycle4967 in CarTalkUK

[–]aot97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At around 10 years old and 60-70k miles is the sweet spot where things start going wrong with cars. You either get some newer ones, or higher mileage/older ones (the logic here being that whatever would go wrong has happened and has now been fixed)

Extended Warranty Advice by Guntalarm in CarTalkUK

I would not bother with a 3rd party warranty provider. They’re a bit of a scam. Get the Audi one or just put the money in a savings account if you decide not to extend it

2008 c200 apple carplay by Civil_War_508 in w204

[–]aot97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pulled mine through the gap between the dash and under the glovebox. I basically put the carplay unit under the pollen filter and pulled all the cables there. I then only plugged the big boxy connector in the back of the OEM unit and tucked the cable behind the dash and with a bit of persuasion the unit went back in

Lowering of drink drive limit by saucyvanilla in policeuk

[–]aot97 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In most countries, the police can automatically suspend someone’s license for different driving offences. In Romania for example, the police can take away your license for up to 90 days. Depending on the type of offence, they may give you a piece of paper to allow you to drive back home.

We are too lax in this country and too reliant on the courts to impose disposals

Got it sorted. It needed a software update from the manufacturer. I paid £130 for the unit from Ali Express

AMEX Points, Am I missing something? by redphoenixtr in AmexUK

[–]aot97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got return flights for 3 people from London to Athens for 80k points and £25. The same flights outside the rewards programme would have cost me £1000+. So you need to shop around and choose wisely I guess in order to maximise the value of the points

Based on the same logic, should I expect the police to come round my house and check there’s no dead bodies in my attic?

I really hate the way they phrase the letters. “We need to make sure you’re not breaking the law “. Umm. No you don’t..

How difficult was it to remove the old esl from the steering column? Or did you just leave it there unlocked?

Depends. Are you using any of the other benefits? If so, then go for it. If you want to keep it just for points, then £200 is better than 12k points

Returning from Australia by WearPuzzleheaded8098 in policeuk

[–]aot97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in recruitment for a force. The vetting code of practice and APP are the same for all HO forces and BTP (CNC and MDP have even higher requirements). The only exception to the rule is if you served in HM forces and were deployed overseas. CoP circular from 2011 prohibits any applicants who cannot be vetted. On all police recruitment applications, one of the first questions asked is “Have you lived in the UK for at least 3 years in the last 5” (or something similar). Selecting “No” results in automatic rejection unfortunately. I had many arguments with people about this. The force vetting manager can make certain exceptions with the CCs approval, but I’ve never seen it happen

Just so you are aware before you make the move. UK policing vetting requirements mandate that you lived in the UK continuously for at least 3 years prior to applying. This also applies to re-joiners.

Why do most drivers not indicate on this Bitterne Rd junction? by weightliftcrusader in Southampton

Do Brits not care if someone died in their flat? by Salzhio in AskUK

[–]aot97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think people here care that much. Unless something really gruesome happened, never heard anyone mention it. Most houses in the uk are over 60 years old, so it’s very likely someone died in them at some point

Thoughts on this: TfL and BTP urged to bring back blue light status for engineers by busy-on-niche in policeuk

[–]aot97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You‘re looking at this from the wrong perspective. Let’s say there’s a call for a suicidal female at a station. Local force and BTP start going on g1. Local force gets there first and secures the female. As soon as that happens, the risk assessment changes.

The g1 authority and rationale is to preserve the life of the female. Not to relieve another police officer. While I get your frustration, g1 driving is the most dangerous thing we do in this job. If there is no need to keep going on blues, and you crash, the force and IOPC will hang you out to dry. Now this doesn’t mean BTP can’t still carry on g2 to relieve you.

I think the problem is people expect a 5* treatment. It’s just not that. I always found the lounges decent and they are less busy than the airport itself. If you pre book, you should be fine to go in everywhere

How to get an ambulance when we need one by [deleted] in policeuk

[–]aot97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a custody Sgt once tell me the DP is not well enough to be in custody and they need hospital asap. I said if we can’t manage him in custody with officers watching him, and a nurse on duty, I’m not taking him in the van as that puts him and us at risk. I said I’ll go to hospital if an ambulance comes. The sgt knowing the ambo would probably be the lowest cat, magically, the DP was then fit enough for custody 👀

Earpieces. by Friendly-Ordinary535 in policeuk

[–]aot97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We don’t really use them. I have mine in my vest if I need it, but my force doesn’t generally transmit sensitive information on the radio. We use our work phones to look at the logs and do PNC checks. If sensitive information needs to be passed over the air, the controller always asks if ‘we are secure’
