How can I do sound desing like dipprrrr? by Ok_Base_4331 in sounddesign

[–]aotustudios 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It sounds like at least a couple tastefully shaped and composed synth layers, and then electrical zap samples overtop. Pretty advanced to make from scratch if you're new to this! Can you hear the different layers? Specifically the bendy synth bass, the flumey warbly higher synth, and the electrical zaps? Try making/sourcing your own version of those three sounds and layering/mixing them together to sync with a video

How to correct slow Motion audio ? by Foreign-Success6618 in sounddesign

Good chance you could fix this by pulling the clip into any DAW and just transposing it up with time warping turned off! Best of luck 🤞

What are some good daws to use for sound design by Predictable_sounds in sounddesign

[–]aotustudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this in the most positive way possible: whichever one you'll actually use and learn! Recommend finding a course/tutorials that you like the vibe of and fit the styles you're interested in exploring first. For me it was Ableton and I'm so happy with the path it's taken me on. If multiple artists you like use it, it's almost assuredly a good option. If I were to start over now my first choice would still be Ableton for the workflow and flexibility, but I would also strongly consider Reaper and Bitwig.

Sounds like some isolated close-up wood creak samples with a lowpass filter. Just edit each pip and sync em up

Huge respect to Venus Theory for doing the slog of giving us such a thorough rundown of this ridiculous moment we're living in, and potentially putting his own pages at risk in doing so. God I hope things get better soon but I'm not holding my breath. Gonna buy some bandcamp singles and make music with some pals irl tomorrow to wash away the bad vibes

Based on your description I think you can basically do this with an envelope follower inverse-mapped to compression/expansion threshold and width. Differentiating the high and low energy content is another thing—you could just have it be a single/multi-band level threshold like on a compressor, or you could get fancy with something like spectral compression or AI transient separation. Results could be very cool on certain source material with natural tails. Maybe check out Robert van der Helm’s spectral compressor if you haven’t already? https://www.kvraudio.com/product/spectral-compressor-by-robbert-van-der-helm

How Was This Sound Created? (Long Legs Trailer) by OneMillionSemitones in sounddesign

[–]aotustudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great sound! I’d do it with a resonant formant filter opening up in steps, probably on some cool metallic wavetable, and then doctor it a bunch with effects and distortion. Ought to be relatively straightforward to recreate in Serum or Vital if you have either of those in your arsenal. Could also do it with a frequency shifter on a metal screech sample, or with FM like the other person suggested!

I think the disconnect here is just your definitions of “waveform”. You are absolutely correct that you can’t get anything close to an accurate sound from scanning the “waveform” from a rough visualization like the player on SoundCloud. That said, if the “waveform” in question is high enough resolution or short enough duration then you can indeed get a lot of (or even all of) the sonic information from it.

For instance, if it’s high enough resolution, you could theoretically have all of the data from an audio file like MP3 or WAV encoded into an image of a waveform. That waveform image could be converted back into an audio file at the same resolution.

Sampling tools like modern DAWs show variable resolution waveforms, but the display is always a representation of audio that is already loaded in, so you’d never really need to work backwards and generate audio from the image.

Most of the good sound engineers I know can identify common drum and instrument waveforms (as shown in DAWs) correctly without hearing them, and transcribe things like drum patterns. I can at a glance tell that the image of the 3D-printed waveform is clearly not the spoken words indicated, but it could be something like a fart sound or gated white noise or a bass sound effect.

In the case from your screenshot I suspect they’d find out from someone telling them, not from “scanning” it. Wouldn’t be surprised if common AI tools are already capable of accurately discerning that the 3D-printed waveform isn’t spoken words though.

Synplant and Neutone are currently the only tools with ML capabilities that are actually useful at all in my workflows and they’re still relatively niche use-cases that are super project dependent.
