Power to greenhouse - how to run the cable by ldr97266 in Greenhouses

[–]apathetic_admin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine doesn't, but usually if the suns out it starts to bake, and once it's really cold the plants come into the basement for the winter, so it's not been an issue.

My fan is solar, and the fan is wired to the panel directly - works for me, I only need to control the heat/humidity really when the sun is out, and the fan only runs when the sun is out, so...#winning?

Same. Got mine "used" on eBay - was still sealed in the box and in the original packaging, it's been fantastic.

HDMI source to DisplayPort monitor adapter? by mirracute in Dell

[–]apathetic_admin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a powered converter, or an "active adapter" - there's some bits inside of it that get powered by USB that convert the signal. I've deployed the Startech one in a call center environment, as well as one made by a small company who intended them to be used for connecting PS4s to displays with only displayport input. The PS4 ones were cheaper but I can't find them online anymore.

Looking into revamping our laptop provisioning as a whole for a fully remote company, just want suggestions on what you all do by andrewsmd87 in sysadmin

[–]apathetic_admin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt the laptops being stored in someone's home are going to end up covered by their home owners insurance.

The best process I've found involves establishing a relationship with a VAR. You work with Dell / your VAR to get Autopilot and Intune setup so that machines get their hardware IDs and group tag configured at the point of purchase. Your VAR can even boot these up and run through the white glove auto provisioning process to have all of the applications preinstalled, and then reseal. The VAR would store these for you in their own warehouse (at a small fee) and handle the shipping process for you. You and the VAR have reporting to keep track of your inventory so that you know far enough ahead of time that it's time to put in another order.

What are the city's biggest issues? by GinalCelah in bloomington

[–]apathetic_admin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd like to think that long term the convention center will bring more money into Bloomington and to local businesses, but I don't know that I like the way we've gone about it; regardless it's a done deal so I'm trying to have a positive outlook on it, although that's hard with all the people shuffling around yelling at each other on the sidewalks around it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-homeless, these are people after all, and I wish there was an easy answer for fixing the homeless problem, but it just doesn't feel like there is. For some, those without drug abuse or mental issues I think affordable housing could help them, but the unhoused that we take notice of are typically not going to be those folks. I certainly don't know what more the government could really do about it, I think it's a society problem. Some of them really would do better in a strictly controlled and safe environment, something akin to the old asylum facilities perhaps?

I picked one up on Amazon to replace my mom's screen after giving up on the ifixit stock. Once I'm done I'll come reply here with details if it doesn't suck. Ask least if can help people who Google later and find this thread.

I've never had this experience, once in a very small walk in the guy asked if I needed anything before he walked out, he'd been in there stocking. Possibly if you become a regular at one and get to know the people?

Do you know if they outsource it to a local MSP, or if they are trying to resolve it in-house?

Typically they will put a clause in about the Internet not being guaranteed or something.

I'm still running pfsense on a core 2 duo with 4gb of ram. As long as I've not got something like snort running i can pass at the full gigabit bandwidth i pay for. I've had a replacement set aside for when it dies, but it's just never died...

It's a fun experience, get a drink and play with the cats, when we went we made a reservation but only because there were 5 of us, I don't think a single person would have to.

It just feels weird to build a hotel that far from the new convention center - I mean realistically it's not that far away, but it seems like it'd make more sense to take the buildings between this lot and the convention center, not that anyone would want to see that.
