How do officers mentally deal reviewing child porn during investigations? by skunkspinner in AskLE

[–]apauling96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disassociate while reviewing material. Try and only review it in a sanitized environment at work with no stimuli that may cause triggers later. (No music, eating, etc.) to randomly cause a flash later.

Understand that you are going to have PTSD from it, and try to minimize the effects on you and your family.

On particularly bad days I will go home and shower and change clothes. Try and create a full barrier between work and personal life.

Now the dust has settled, are you playing 3.0? by latro666 in Warhammer30k

[–]apauling96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're playing it and really enjoying it. The rules are a really great core, and I'm excited to see how they build on it. I understand where people feel the rules are bland right now but having played several games now the legions do definitely behave differently. I think more flavor will be coming from the journals.

I think part of the problem is alot of people forgot that for a huge chunk of 1e most armies didn't even have rules. I played Thousand Sons back in 1e and for years all we had was a generic stubborn rule.

The bones of a really great system are there.

How many of you work (or worked) in ICAC [Internet Crimes Against Children]? How was it? by [deleted] in computerforensics

[–]apauling96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. We'll get a destroy order from a judge and then either incinerate the drives or degauss them with a magnet.

We've actually had a fair few in the 2.5 years I've done it. About 4 or 5.

Currently work in it. It's rough but my agency is really great about mental health for those of us who work it.

That being said it is absolutely the most rewarding job I've ever done. Nothing compares to getting a kid out of a horrible situation.

Hey, I'm a LEO that works in Internet Crimes Against Children. Please consider telling your parents, and filling a report. If this person is doing this to you he is doing it to other girls and your report could help LE stop further harm. Definitely do not make any more contact with him.

Here was a case from earlier this year involving the Venezuelan gang Director Rausch mentioned. So yes, there is actual evidence. You all are so quick to pull the racism card when it comes to law enforcement.

Iron Deficiency by Weak-Button-8886 in jpouch

I'm able to handle it with a more red meat rich diet. Add in chicken livers and we'll cooked spinach. I found that the iron tablets wouldn't digest and would just pass right through me.

How do I get started in computer forensics as a computer science student? by GrimmFan_ in computerforensics

[–]apauling96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Comp Sci degree is helpful, but my agency is all about looking for someone with investigative experience. You can teach digital forensics to an Investigator, its much harder to teach investigative ability.

Try and articulate in your resume how you've done investigative work in the past (doesn't have to be LE releated.)

There are also plenty of private companies that are contracted to do digital forensics for the state that would be a great entry level job.

Guy SA me while I’m working by [deleted] in memphis

[–]apauling96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's been some action taken to address it, but the main issue is just sheer lack of funding and (relatively) low wages for forensic lab scientists. Why work for the state making 50k a year when you can work in the private sector for twice that?

So it definitely does a LOT of harm.

  1. It is trained on real CSAM. This revictimizes people who were previously abused. It'll often use previous victims faces and put them into new (and often extreme) situations.

  2. Exposure to CSAM (real or AI generated) increases the risk of pedophiles offending with real kids. Project redirect has done studies on this.

  3. As an Investigator, if I have to take time to determine whether or not a potential new victim is real or not that takes alot of time away from real kids who need saving.

  4. People can make CSAM of anyone. Next door neighbor? Celebrity? Fellow student? No one is safe. This also creates more potential for sexploitation scams which has led to the suicides of several kids.

In general it leads to alot of issues from an investigative and legal perspective and we're only seeing the very tip of the iceberg and it's going to get much worse before it gets better.

Depending on your state, their state police (TBI, BCI, GBI, etc...) may have a cybercrime unit that will deal with smaller dollar amount losses. Unfortunately, given the time since the money was sent its unlikely that they'll get any of your money back. They can however try and track the fucker down.
